NP  Fates Warning:  Disconnected

It's fascinating, this world of Fates Warning. And there's definitely a progression: While Maiden and Priest (interesting juxtaposition this) were indulging themselves and their fans with pyrotechnics, FW were seeking into the very nerve of progmetal. With Parallels in 1991, the triumvirate of Matheos, Alder and Zonder was fully coalesced and the music mature and profound. Then came Inside Out and A Pleasant Shade of Gray, also exuding this maturity, and with Disconnected and FWX, they made excursions in very esoteric directions. All of this with a relatively small fanbase.

Now Mark Zonder has left FW in order to pursue other lines. (Maybe his fate was warning him.) Without Zonder - a fabulous drummer - FW can never be the same. Ray Alder has done some great stuff with Redemption. (I'm not sufficiently into Slavior, Engine, and OSI to evalute them properly.)

I'm sure that these three genii will continue to surprise us with prog treats, FW or not.

It's on Parallels, their most exuberant album, and a good starter  *horns*

But I warn you, Bups, FW are highly addictive  ;)

NP  Fates Warning: Awaken The Guardian

No need to get the first three FW studio albums with John Arch, I'd say, except for completeness.

Pretty regular metal.

Good judgement you have, Tom. It also gets the most votes at SS's official site at Metal Realm.  *horns*

Rainbow - Rising *horns*

Blinding album, this one.  One of my fondest musical memories from my schooldays was catching Rainbow twice on the Rising tour.  Awesome. They were never quite the same for me after Dio was kicked out...

Just played: Arena - Immortal?
Now playing: Rainbow - Long Live Rock 'n' Roll.

I saw Rainbow on that tour, too, but didn't enjoy it as much as the Rising one.  Not the band's fault, just that Stafford Bingley Hall is a sh*tty barn of a place for a gig.
