Magnum is Magic in Music. I often wonder if Tony Clarkin the song writer is merely human.

Quote from: Nicky007 on Tue, 2008-04-01, 23:16:06
I was just bored to death by Magnum's Breath Of Life - it was more like a gasp for life. No proper melody, no nothin  :'(

I sincerely hope that Princess Alice is much better.

I like Spirit Of Man a lot, although it's not prog.

Nicky.

No proper melody... it is just, again, to marvel at how different we hear things at times. Granted, it is among the last couple of albums on my list of "Best Magnum albums" (there is no other list). And to reach out a hand, I can stretch so far as to say "I think I know what you mean, when I compare it to most of their back catalogue". That hurt, I hope it is appreciated!!! :'(

"Brand new morning" was much more solid. Better songs overall, and better production. And this time they had a deal with a drummer who didn't bow out, so Clarkin didn't have to play and mouse-edit them synth drums again. But again, the next one, "Princess Alice and the broken arrow" is absolutely brilliant. I almost cry with joy when I play it and still can't believe how many unique, strong songs there are on it. A true return to form, which is rare, after so many years. (32 years since the oldest recordings I've got.)

Bob Catley's solo albums are mostly good and all, and I do have them, and as he is a rock solid singer with a warm and happening voice - which is the broadest or widest voice I've ever heard in real life - I do enjoy listening to them. But compared to Magnum, I feel it's a bit of a replica of the real thing. Especially Gary Hughes with his education in music was shamelessly calculating up chord progressions that would sound similar without being a direct steal, and made sure the same synth sounds were used. I mean... Maaan?! It's a bit like these new very well made Ferrari replicas with tuned-up engines. It looks like a Ferrari, it goes like a Ferrari... but it isn't one. And I think that will be apparent in the long run.

OK, Deenie, I'l put Princess Alice back on my SL  :)

I'm really willing to give Magnum another chance, since they're based in my birthtown and stuff  :D

But I really went dead with Breath and couldnt even play it to the end, although I consider myself very perserverent.

Have you heard some of the stuff where he sings ?  That guy can express and convey emotions, man  *horns*

Nobody believes me here, but tellya, it's TRUE  8)

NP  Porcupine Tree:  Blank Planet

Rather laid back for my taste, but there are some highs here and there, like Sentimental.

Prob wont become one of my fave PT's ...... but sometimes things can change drastically for a proggie  ;)

I'l admit that Gavin is a superb drummer, and he's done some fine stuff on this album.

"A happening voice" is a most useful expression that the English language lacked, so I provided. ;D

I have everything by Gary Hughes and Ten (except for the last one with the new guitarist). I kinda lost a bit of the feeling because so much is recognizably derived from existing songs. But yes, he can sing emotionally. "I won't break your heart" is stunning!

Hey you f* - OK, let's just say "friend"  ;D - thats just the best one: The Twilight Chronicles  *horns*

You prob dont either have The Essential Collection. Hey Deenie, how come you always manage to avoid the best albums ?  ;D

OK guys, now it's real partytime. Here's pleasure for both the eye and ear - so no excuse to stay away.

Khan is arguably the best prog singer around, and Simone - need I say more, huh Bups ?   ;)

Do you guys have this song ?  It's on the Special Edition of Ghost Reveries. It's a real nice song, a very unusual mood for Opeth.

By the way, did you know that it's actually a cover of a Deep Purple song?

Yes to both. You see, that's the only Opeth album that Ms 007 can stand (not making it lesser  ;D ), so we've actually spun it a lot, i.a. during our drives through the beautiful Skåne (another å for you, Mad), adding to the joy  *horns*

Agree, Tom  *horns*

And Martin Lopez raises himself to the top league of drummanship with stuff like this, man *horns*

It strikes me that Opeth are one of the most album-oriented groups. Isnt that so ?

So now we just have to convince Paco that he needs Opeth. How do we fix that, guys  ???
