Just finished playing:
Big Big Train - "Wassail" EP. (And ordered...)

And now playing:

What would we be without prog?

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

Teunis

pp: Muse - Absolution

np: radio - Sympho Shop. They just played Toto 8). Would have expected the most proggy track from Toto XIV 'Great Expectations', but instead they played 'Unknown Soldier'.

Bruce Springsteen:  The River

Super! Groundbreaking album, still holds well *horns*

Back in the late 70's Springsteen was real exciting, I'd say particularly with Darkness On The Edge Of Town and The River, my two faves iac *horns*

I was playing these albums over and over again 8)

I liked Born To Run a lot too.

Man, there was so much energy, rebelliousness, we felt so alive, the World belonged to us. All the rich and powerful shits could fuck themselves, we had Life. - I still feel that way, except that I usually express myself more diplomatically ;D

One of the things that I've wondered a lot about is: What happened to this guy? He could've continued pushing limits. Instead he settled with the sound that he had developed up to The River. Excellent music, yes, but nothing WOW :(

Guys, listen to these albums - oh, sorry, I forgot, rock started with Arena :P

Super album *horns*

Nothing like death metal - typical Josh Homme humor ;D - more like QOTSA 8)

Here's Josh when he's best :)

He made his best work in the seventies and the beginning of the eighties.
After the disappointing Born in the USA, he made some nice albums, but never as good as albums like The River, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born To Run and Nebraska.

NP> Dream Theater ~ Score

Currently the enormous and astonishing Octavarium.
What a song!  *horns*

I see that we agree on that, Mad :)

I'm surprised to see you characterising Born In The U.S.A. as "disappointing" as it's "Springsteen's most successful album ever, selling 15 million copies in the US alone, and 30 million worldwide." (Wiki). I haven't listened to it sufficiently to be able to make any opinion on it - maybe because it didn't seem like a step forward for Bruce, not musically iac ???

And Thanx for the recommendation of Nebraska, take it that you think highly of it ;)

:'( , really sucks. I'm still waiting for the new Muse album 'Drones', which I pre-ordered online on 22th April. It was released on 8th June and now it's still in backorder: 'Awaiting stock from our suppliers'. Unbelievable. Found it a cheap purchase (less than 10 euros). Next time I'll be visiting my local record shop again. Never too old to learn ;).

Fantastic album!

I was listening to Jean Michel Jarre's "Oxygene" "Equinoxe" and "Les Chants Magnetique".
Really love those albums. Especially on a warm day for some strange reason.

Anathema - "A Fine Day To Exit"

I hear a lot of Pink Floyd in this. Not a bad album this.

After that it was:
Arena - "Pepper's Ghost"

8) Still a really good album!

NP:
Downhere - "Ending Is Beginning"

What a perfect and melodic pop/rock album. No prog at all, but so good, with (christian) lyrics that make me cry (a good thing in this case).

Financially it was a step forward but I doubt that he anticipated the success of the album.
I think it mainly became a success after his great performance in USA for Africa (We Are The World).
At that time, I was about 14 years old, I didn't really know him as an artist, only heard Born To Run but even I was stunned by his part in the aforementioned song.

When you think of it, it isn't really such a surprise after all.
There are more eighties albums that became a huge success but when you ask the (true) fan, they usually don't share the same enthusiasm as the rest of the world.
Like Brothers in Arms from The Dire Straits for instance.
There are some nice songs on that album but overall, it's a complete let down.
Doesn't come near the great albums like Communique, Love over Gold and even On Every Street.

And what to think of Invisible Touch by Genesis?

Financially and commercially a huge success as well but when you listen to the songs and the production...

Nick Magnus - "N'Monix"

This is actually really good. I bought it along with Big Big Train's excellent new EP "Wassail".
The guy is known for his collaborations with Steve Hackett since 1979.
Steve also plays on this album. And Tim Bownes (No-Man) sings on one song. Then there's this guy who sings on a couple of songs who sounds like Peter Gabriel in some places. I found out he's called Tony Patterson and appearantly he sings with the Genesis tribute band ReGenesis. This album is in the retro prog corner. You should listen to it. It's good.

Doesn't come near the great albums like Communique, Love over Gold and even On Every Street.

To me their first album, Self-titled, was the epiphany. When I heard the first chimes of that album, I was stunned. That whole album is tremendous, but of course Down To The Waterline and Sultans Of Swing hold a special place *horns*

I liked Communiqué a lot too, but then I started losing interest in Dire Straits as there were other groups that were doing more interesting things imo ;)

It was a special experience being there when all these things happened, it was like being a boat in a lively ocean and being tossed around 8)

Making Movies had some novelties too, but then it started getting routine. And today Mark Knopfler is a lounge entertainer.

But he had just those years '78-'80 *horns*

And what to think of Invisible Touch by Genesis?

Genesis were exciting and groundbreaking up to Abacab, then they lost it / sold out. Everything from Self-titled on is radio and dance music. Of course, the later albums sold best, that's because the masses have vulgar taste :-X

Their first albums were more quaint than enjoyable, but everybody was doing that in those days, also Floyd, Traffic, Family, lots more. Most of these groups dispersed, but the Genesis guys knew they had somethin, and they kept together and made a string of ingenious albums *horns*

Just got the cd. Needless to say *horns*

Tiny Tim:  God Bless Tiny Tim

Hadn't heard it since I was a kid. Man, this album is ingenious!!! Tiny, arranger Artie Butler, and producer Richard Perry together created a wonderful fun and swinging album. And this was '68 ???  A timeless album! Going straight to my prog pantheon *horns*

Leprous:  The Congregation

First listen. Pretty good, not overwhelming. Let's see .... 8)

Yes, I can only agree of course. But fortunately there are some nice songs spread across those later albums. Mama, Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Domino, The Brazilian, Driving The Last Spike, Dreaming While You Sleep, Fading Lights. They should have made that one album. It would have 70 minutes of prog.
In many ways Calling All Stations doesn't fit in the last three Phil albums. There is some good stuff on that album too.

I had that same feeling. Their previous album "Coal" however, was an eye opener for me! But I also haven't given up on "The Congregation".

Nick Magnus again.
I haven't heard anyone of you mentioning him. Unfortunately he's only known to Steve Hackett fans it seems. And there are not many Hackett fans here either...
