The Butterfly Man

These days I'm mostly listening to music through Spotify while at work. Pretty good way to discover new music. It makes suggestions based on what you're listening to.

JP: Von Hertzen Brothers - New Day Rising
What a great album this is. I already knew the single (also called New Day Rising) and liked it very much. Then I forgot about them until you guys mentioned them again. Now I can't stop playing this album. ;D

NP: Selah Sue - Reason
Belgian Singer/songwriter. She has an addictive voice. Don't expect prog here. :-*

I'm picking up on some old classics, buy an old album together with the new albums:

NP  Byrds:  Turn! Turn! Turn!

The song Turn! Turn! Turn! has haunted me thru the ages - so true, and so wonderful *horns*

www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4ga_M5Zdn4

To everything, turn, turn, turn.
There is a season, turn, turn, turn.
And a time to every purpose under heaven.
A time to build up, a time to break down.
A time to dance, a time to mourn.
A time to cast away stones.
A time to gather stones together.

Whew!

NP: Keep of Kalessin - Epistemology

The first real track The Spiritual Relief is actually very good. I do agree with what Paco said earlier about the machinegun drumming (called blastbeats) but I'm pleasantly surprised. Very good track indeed. I will be investigating this further... 8)

Thanks Nicky.

Interesting reviews of Jagged Little Pill - from Wiki:

Jagged Little Pill was released on June 13, 1995 in the United States, followed by a worldwide release. Jagged Little Pill received general acclaim from most music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from AllMusic gave it a very positive review, giving it four-and-a-half out of five stars. He mostly complimented the album's standout talent saying "It's remarkable that Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill struck a sympathetic chord with millions of listeners, because it's so doggedly, determinedly insular." He concludes, "As slick as the music is, the lyrics are unvarnished and Morissette unflinchingly explores emotions so common, most people would be ashamed to articulate them. This doesn't make Jagged Little Pill great, but it does make it a fascinating record, a phenomenon that's intensely personal." Robert Christgau gave it a B+ grade, mainly praising its thematic content: "she's happy to help 15 million girls of many ages stick a basic feminist truth in our faces: privileged phonies have identity problems too. Not to mention man problems." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagged_Little_Pill

NP  Dream Theater:  Self-titled

Everytime one listens to this band, one is reminded of how stellar they are  *horns*

I think that we've used up our Room quota of "great" for a while ;D

Interesting, Mad, what's it like ?

NP  Saturnian:  Dimensions  *horns*

Guess I'm alone with this one in the Room ... Pity, damn pity :(

This album has everything. Just like KoK's Epistemology. Very much the same vibe.

The lyrics in both are about the individual being called to fullfil his/her potential - iow there's a lot more to life than most people (like to) think. These albums testify vividly to that.

I do however find Obsidian's (from KoK) lyrics much better than Philip Wilson's. Philip should have had an advantage being a native English speaker. Maybe it's because Obsidian is older, or maybe he's just more philosophic than Philip ???

Obsidian's lyrics are very intriguing 8)

The title track is great very good! ;D Especially from the moment the quiet bit kicks in somewhere at 2:30 onwards. *horns* The only bad thing about it is that it ends with a fade-out. :-\

Introspection needs more listens. Didn't impress me at first listen. I only remember the growls and blastbeats.

I will dig further. Thanks for the recommendation. 8)

Same here! It's been ages... :-[ But I made up for it this morning and listened to the album. Sounds slightly out of date but still a pleasant listen nontheless. :)

Ainit! Nice to share, Tom :)

The first part sounds noisy on first listens, but the're a lot of fine details that start appearing with repeated listening ;)

Yeah, that's it! Reminds me of the similar passage in The Count of Tuscany ;)

Then the rhythm section falls in hard, the guitar rockets off, and it turns all tribal 8)

But what an ending! Very appropriate for that tour de force of an album :)

Yeah, give it some more listens. Amazing piece too. They released it as an ep last year. Blew me over. Made me realise that KoK had taken off into something totally extraordinary *horns*

I think we could get Paxi to join the party. He's already halfway in. I'll give him a Heckler & Koch to practice on :D

NP  Vanilla Fudge:  The Beat Goes On

Very much a concept album - that things don't change just like that ;)

My parents were really intrigued by it when I was a kid, and played it a lot.

Interesting and touching to listen to it again after all these many years :)
