NP Flying Colors - Second Nature

Thanks for the link, Teunis  ;)

Edit : first listen was very impressive. It's too soon to tell but I could end liking it much more than the previous one !

Death Angel - Act 3

Good old early 90's thrash with some acoustic bits and a bit of funk ish tunes

JP  Genesis:  Calling All Stations

Pretty much ambient music :(

Ray Wilson sings well, but that's about it. Else it's a constant churn, with a bit of spices sprinkled over. Also the lyrics are uninteresting. I guess Tony and Mike needed some new golf clubs, and this album brought them the means in plenty. What a disappointment. I remember also Ray expressing his disappointment with his spell with Genesis.

In the paragraph "Critical reception" in the Wiki article about Genesis' self-titled album, we read:

In their retrospective review, Allmusic criticised the album for lacking coherency, but found that a majority of the tracks are outstanding, "balancing such sleek, pulsating pop tunes as 'That's All' with a newfound touch for aching ballads." They also praised the band's completely redefining themselves as a pop group. The Kerrang! reviewer determined that for this album Genesis "have traded technical complexity and ingenuity for an altogether more stunning simplicity", making "a Genesis album for people who normally hate Genesis" and "great music for the masses".

Altho Allmusic and Kerrang! meant this positively, to me it means that we at that point lost Genesis from Progworld - where they till then had been genre-defining with every album. Even Abacab, tho uneven and partly catering to the general pop and disco mood, was innovative. I think that the "redefining themselves as a pop group" is spot-on. They never returned to Progworld :(

Here's an album that really made a difference:

And so you want to meet God
Sure you can

Nicky, check out Stiltskin's album "SHE" (Ray Wilson on vocals). I think you'll like it. It's pretty heavy stuff. Far from Metal of course, but compared to "Calling All Stations"... It's good stuff!

Nicky007

Thanx, Paxi. I have Stiltskin on both my listening program and my shopping list - and now you just upped them :)

I'm just so sad that Genesis sold out. For many years they were just as groundbreaking as Yes. Old age is no excuse; Yes are still exciting, even tho the guys are now about 70 *horns*

Paxi, you should listen (a bit more to) Bal-Sagoth. Here you'll be challenged richly, and if you stick to it, gratified inordinately ;)

Okay, since you wanna try out Stiltskin (also check out Ray Wilson's "Chasing Rainbows" ::) , which is perhaps a bit too poppy for you, but you never know), I'll try another Bal-Sagoth album. Which is the one that should pull me into the Bal-Sagoth hole?

It's more a question of venturing out into the Cosmos and beyond ;)

Well, start with playing the following YouTube three times:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDmNkvE050I

And crank up the volume of course :P

Then play:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfcQfu046Y8

also a few times.

Sagoth are so different from anything else that it takes some listens.

Here are a couple more good starters:

It can be difficult to get the lyrics. You can find them here: www.darklyrics.com/b/balsagoth.html

The most advanced lyrics in Progworld. And the most advanced music imo *horns*

I would think that this should be of interest to Roomies :)

On repeat and it's becoming rather addictive. I am glad that I did not give up on King ... a few months ago.

NP DeeExpus - King Of Number 33   8)

I read that they had a few dates with Mystery a few weeks ago. It must have been a hell of gigs !

Today I have played:

Kaipa - "Notes From The Past"
I love this album. I've been playing it a lot lately. Can't wait for "Sattyg", which will be released in november (the month of my birthday ;D).

Also played bits and pieces of:
The Pineapple Thief - "Magnolia" thanks to VPRO "Luisterpaal"

It was pleasant. I have been listening to TPT in the past and was not very enthusiastic about it to say the least. But this time it sounds like they are going somewhere. I have to listen to it again, but I think this might be the first album of TPT that I'll like. (My little brother listens to TPT occasionally)

Also listened to Lunatic Soul's "Lunatic Soul" ('the black one'). It was also pleasant. This was the first spin. But I wasn't really focussed. I played it in the background because of my mom paying a visit. She didn't complain, so I guess she liked it too. :P

I still have to listen to Kansas, Karmakanic and Bal-Sagoth, but I didn't forget! I will listen, I promise! :)

Each to his own, of course but maybe you should have a listen to the album Variations on a Dream.
Probably the best album in TPT catalog but beside that it's a true gem.
A great prog/rock/whatever album, has to be listened to. :)

NP> Fish ~ Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors

Next up is the new Amplifier. :)
The Octupus was great, Echo Street was even better (though with a different sound) but what about the new one, Mystoria?
Cause of Injury: Lack of Adhesive Ducks.

NP Billy Joel - 52nd Street

Really impressive. I know this is as far as can be of actual musical hype but it should be on every music lover's shelf. A good place to start with Billy Joel.

Peter

Tenacious D - [Rize of the Fenix #01] Rize Of The Fenix

excellent... and funny, too. *horns*
Arriving somewhere, but not here....

Helloween ~ Keeper of the Seven Keys: The Legacy

I've been playing the first two parts lateley ('86/'87) and I really enjoyed it.
I did some serious headbanging on these two albums.
This version has Andi Derris on it, nice album but a Keeper album without Michael Kiske is no Keeper album at all. :(

Vanden Plas ~ Chronicles of the Immortals: Netherworld

It's safe to say that the sound, the identity of Vanden Plas will ever be the same. Put on album one and then play them all until you reach this album and you find that the songs are different, but the melodies and production, is the same.
There are bands who sounds different with each album, but Vanden Plas is not such a band.
And that's also a quality.
Really like this album.
Dark, gritty, evil. Fantasy.
It has Vanden Plas written all over it. :)
