Iggy

I've been listening to ELO recently On the Third day and Eldorado which are nice.

Also a bit of Fish A Feast of Consequences which for me is a step from some of his recent stuff.

I have also bought myself a turntable which is very Pro(Re)gressive. I syill have a lot of vinyl from the 70's and have picked up a few more recent ones.

Seventh Degree of Separation
The Raven that refused to Sing
Fear of a Blank Planet

It is a great to listen to music this way again. It is a totally different experience but I have to say it is very expensive  :o

8). Thanks for the reminder. About time that I'll be playing some ELO ;).

Heard/read lots of great things about this one. Will check it out, but know nothing from his solo career. I'll let you know.

I definitively think that the bashing that this album is receiving these days is quite unfair :P As far as I am concerned, I still like it a lot.

It's a great album, Bupie, just like all the DT studio albums *horns*

Big names always attract bashers, it's a sport, one that I ignore ::)

Today one can find many full albums on YouTube. I can recommend that. I actually do that with all the groups that interest me. Then I can form my own opinion ;)

NP  Bal-Sagoth:  The Chthonic Chronicles

The sixth album in the Hexalogy. After some three listens it seems to me the richest *horns*

Here's a track that's very epic and melodic, no growl and moderately thrashy - hard to find, as Bal-Sagoth pieces are very rich cocktails - and actually some fine drumming too (Dan Mullins) - one of my fave BS pieces 8)

Bal-Sagoth:  The Hammer Of The Emperor   www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfcQfu046Y8

I think I'll have me a gin and chthonic now ;D

There's a lotta discussion going on in your head, Bupie, before you arrive - but thus we know our dear Frenchies ;D

Of course you're enjoying it - and do you wanna know why ? ... Easy, cuz it's great music !!! You'd be a fool not to like it ... so this proves that you'r not a fool ;)

Seriously, Royal Hunt are close to Arena, so any Arena fan is bound to like'm - once the mind has stilled :)

Still I'd say that you should get the official studio albums. Start with Collision Course.

Subsignal - Paraiso

np: Fish - A Feast Of Consequences

Not so excited about this one. Not really my thing ::). Too much of the same and too poppy for my taste. Although I know you have to give music some time, I know for sure that this album won't appeal to me.

Here you and I share bigtime, Teunis :)

Bal-Sagoth:  Chthonic Chronicles

This I won't recommend to you, Teunis, as there's a lot of growl - well, there's a lotta everything here ;)

It's like a wild rollercoaster where you'r thrown up and down, sideways, turned around ... - whew, pretty breathtaking :o

Chthonic seems to me the apotheosis of the Bal-Sagoth adventure - brings me to think of Goethe's Faust at the end, particularly the Goetheanum performance I experienced twenty tears ago 8)

Guys, let's see some adventurous spirit here in the Room :)

NP The Killers - Battle Born on vinyl.  8) Probably their most elaborate album yet - the best in my opinion. It's crazy how vinyl allows you to hear things you never noticed before. Makes me see the whole album in a fresh new light.
Let your conscience decide !

PH

Ray Wilson - "Chasing Rainbows"
A nice poprock album. Or something like that.

Steve Hackett - "Please Don't Touch!"
When this album was released, Ray Wilson was just nine years old.

I like both albums. They are very different albums. Yet both artists are part of the Genesis family.

Nice music. Reminds me of a more laid back Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. For some reason I never really listened to Tangerine Dream. I think my dad used to have an album by them back in the LP days, but nowadays he never listens to them.
They released so many albums, I wouldn't know where to start.

Tangerine Dream have the reputation of being laid back, yeah, even ambient. I thought so too - until now! Listen to this track from Underwater, Paxi (and anyone else ;) ). There's a neat guitar solo too, for those who are patient (like proggies should be ;) ):

Tangerine Dream:  Ride on the Ray   www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bAsGhI70LQ&list=PLD7E914AC2726D572

"Recorded Aug. 1, 1987 In front of the Reichstag, Berlin, Germany".

OK, it's rather steady music, but not always laid back, sometimes very upfront *horns*

And the visuals are 8) too.

Underwater Sunlight is an excellent place to start. Then Le Parc - from the same Blue Years, with Edgar Froese, Christopher Franke, and Paul Haslinger *horns*

These two were recommended to me personally by Jonny Maudling :)

The Endless Dream is my favourite and imo this is the best Rabin/Yes Album. There are better songs on BG and 90125 but overall I think this one is stronger. I think Trevor Rabin and Jon Andersons voices work really well together.

"Bombastic" isn't the word I'd use. I'd maybe say: very melodic, big sound, dynamic contrasts 8)

Quote
what's your favourite?

Probably I Am Waiting. I like the sweet way it starts. Then it breaks out into real rock, with a big sound, Chris dunking on his bass etc. Then it gets quiet again, and Jon's lovely voice sails away over the tender guitar, and the tasty vocal harmony.

But there's so much wonderful music on Talk.

Trevor gave his all to this album. To me, he's just as much part of Yes as Jon and Chris. He defined three of their albums *horns*

Quote

Probably Real Love. It's too much Open-Your-Eyes-ish ;)

Even so, it's not entirely lost on me, as there's some tasty Rabin guitar, and I like Chris' upfront bass.

How about you, Paxi ?

Played:

Yes: Magnification

Nice, was better than last time ;) but still not one of my fave Yes-albums :-\

Mag was very much Jon's thingy. He had long wanted to try out a symphony orchestra with Yes. Well, we gotta lotta crazy ideas in Yes, so why not also try out this one ;)

I must say that the symphony parts are mostly rather clichéd. I'm sure that Rick could have juiced up these songs more.

And this is the heights of Jon's New Age trip. We got Harmonic Convergence all over the place - big at the time, but rather dated today.

And it's a bit too H-Marillion-ish - ups! Sorry, Tom'n'Erik :D

However, it's part of the Yes adventure, so let's give it a *horns*

JP  Yes:  Talk  *horns*

Thanx to my pal Paxi :)

NP  Carcass:  Surgical Steel

Jonny likes this album a lot. I'm sorta :-\ atm, but I'l certainly give it some runs - let's see ....

One can't accuse Jonny for being narrow in his musical taste, he likes all sorts'o stuff from Clannad and Tangerine Dream to Carcass and Autopsy. The variety in Bal-Sagoth reflects that. What Jonny adds to this is an unbelievable sense of melody - that's why he's my man :)

Of the Rabin era, I only know "90125" (which I really like) and "Talk" (which is also really nice indeed). I don't have "Big Generator" yet. I also plan to get "Union", but that doesn't really count as Rabin-Yes, right?

So I'm actually still in discovery phase, and while I like everything on "Talk" almost immediately, Endless Dream is 'hard to get', which is natural for most epics. Not that I don't like the song, but there's nothing that stands out yet. In a few days I am going to tell you how awesome I think this song is. ;)
Plenty of nice hooks and choruses in the rest of the album! Love it!

You're definitely right about the voices thing! These harmonies are one of the great things I like about Yes and they seem to be more present in Rabin-Yes. Rabin's voice is more 'radio-friendly' too. Which makes for a nice and fresh change.

Yeah I think he is just what Yes needed: the kick in the butt. Some may not like the direction he took with Yes, but it's better than going nowhere ("Tormato", "Drama").

Actually quite recently, cuz we talked about it here. It's a fine album, and had it been by any other group, it would'v been great, but it doesn't at all have the depth and richness of Talk.
