One of the great genre-defining metal classics:

Black Sabbath:  Children Of The Grave   www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rihpED_obk

And while we're at it ;D  let's take another classic song from Master Of Reality, this one inspired grunge:

Black Sabbath:  Sweet Leaf   www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3YtvuZ2-I0

The coughing at the beginning of Sweet Leaf is Tony Iommi right after he took a drag on a joint :D

He's just telling us in a nice way that we're destroying the World - and that's exactly what we're doing. But people don't really realize it, so they continue to live in their dreamworld. E.g. let's see more people become vegetarians.

We went out to a special beer inn, I had an Aphrodisiac, a Canadian Belgian-style beer - full, tasty, and well balanced - and then we went to a vegan restaurant and had an excellent meal there. Then it was 10 pm, and we were tired and went home.

This is a good sign. There seems to be some movement in the Room now again ;)

So I'll venture some Bal-Sagoth again - still uncertain, however, whether there's the slightest interest :-\

Meantime I'v found two tracks that should be at least in part accessible to Room taste. Remember to crank up the volume - works well with Bal-Sagoth:

Bal-Sagoth:  Starfire Burning Upon The Ice-Veiled Throne Of Ultima Thule   www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDmNkvE050I

Bal-Sagoth:  Star-Maps Of The Ancient Cosmographers   www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFRzAOc9HoE

I for one am interested in your musical journeys (and I try to follow you as much as I can), but I want to point out that this kind of music is far from Shattered Room standards. Which is of course absolutely fine(!), but don't be disappointed when others don't like it as much as you do...
For instance, I'm pretty enthusiastic about video game soundtracks myself, but since this is far from mainstream Room music I'm not expecting to win you all over.

These songs are interesting in a way. Well, I don't know. I think the narrative voice is a bit too funny, on the edge of pathetic actually. Since I just mentioned it, the music is a bit like a video game which I can't recall. Or perhaps it's a more general feeling of the song. I heard a few parts that could be more appealing to me if it wasn't for the drums. I don't know what it is with these kind of bands, but they seem to think that you have to speed it up twenty times to make it sound sophisticated? I think it makes the sound 'stretched out' if you know what I mean? I can't differentiate the various drum sounds anymore. While you can really demonstrate your drumming skills when you play a lot slower and add subtle things in it (Gavin Harrison is still number one for me in that respect).

I have to confess that I'm only persevering because you like it so much. I'll keep listening to your YouTube links though, since you have made me discover a few nice albums here and there before. So not all is lost. ;).
There's still enough music left we can share.

This was what I was hoping for, Paxi, just some response. I often feel like Tom: that one is just talking to a wall in the Room.

We all have our little musical hobby room, which is fine, as it's the starting point for presenting, discussing, and sharing music. But when it comes to discussing and sharing, I could wish for some more activity here.

So again, you're the one who responds ;)

Yes, I know that Bal-Sagoth is a far cry from Room mainstream. It's even further from the general rock community. Probably we're only a few thousand Bal-Sagoth fans, otoh we fans regard BS as a cultural epiphany of the order of Dream Theater and Shakespeare.

Paxi, I'm happy that you tried out Bal-Sagoth on my request - that's obviously asking for much in the Room - and also that you gave us your well-considered take on them.

Clearly we should be honest with each other and respect another's taste - all of us Roomies :)

I would say that Bal-Sagoth is quite far from Room mainstream, but their music and lyrics fit well into Room standards.

Let's take a look: The lyrics are a combination of Theosophy, philosophy, mythology and epics. Well, Dream Theater is Theosophy (karma and reincarnation e.g.) and philosophy (masses of it in Petrucci's fine lyrics). Arena is mythology - clearly: Biblical, English mythology and more - and epics - Pepper's Ghost, Clive's great Caamora She and Alchemy.

The music of Bal-Sagoth is - well, everything that we listen to in the Room: Mike Oldfield atmospherics, thrash metal ala TestAmenT ( Funky's stuff ;) ), even Dream Theater, dramatic melodic stuff ala Arena and DT - so genre-wise, BS fits very well into the Room.

I agree with you, however, that the drums are too noisy in passages, and could have used a better drummer, maybe not a Gavin Harrison here, but rather a Mike Mangini.

Where Bal-Sagoth deviate is in going further: Byron Roberts brings Shakespearean diction into prog, which has not been done to this extent before. That's what makes people in the rock community respond with "cheesy", "overdone" - "funny", as you said - which shows where the limits of this community go, because Byron's vocabulary and diction is actually very close to classic English drama. And chief composer Jonny Maudling encompasses pretty much all musical genres, and switches suddenly from one to the other; this has not either been done before - so outrageously.

Here we come to one of the very sad divisions in society: The educated class regard rock as primitive (they don't know about "prog"), the lyrics in rock as banal; while rockers in general are not very learned - you're an exception, Paxi.

So how do we make it clear to the intelligentsia that prog lyrics are well worth studying, and that good prog is at the level of Beethoven and Wagner ? And how do we get rockers - and proggies - to use dictionaries, encyclopedias, and read demanding literature ? It's a looong looong road ............ ;)
