why ?

Just kiddin  :)

I enjoyed very much the four Fish-Marillion studio albums. Listened several times to'm and went back and forth. Can't say at this point which one(s) I like best, they'r all great  *horns*

Whada you guys think ?

Then I took a round with the recent Dream Theater studio albums. It became clear to me that DT are my fave band. There's just sooooo much genius all over the place  *horns*

So many great bands these days ... but there really is somethin very special about DT - aint that so, Mad, Tom ?

Teunis, Greenie, Funky, you guys should give DT another spin. Start with Falling Into Infinity  ;)

These guys are up there too:

NP  Rush:  Clockwork Angels

Super  *horns*

I like them very much. I also enjoy The Thieving Magpie and the official early stages bootlegs.

Recently: Discipline. - Unfolded Like Staircase       I just freaking love this band.  Rave rave rave rave rave.  Going to order their first.
Last Night:  The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium      Getting another of theirs too.
Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff                      And theirs.  Interestingly, I see their influence in both Discipline and MV.
                  Mastodon - Crack the Skye

NP: Arena - Pepper's Ghost          I really think this is my fave Arena album (at least until I play The Visitor again).

Been awhile since I've heard the first three, but at the time, Script was my favorite.

Heard a DT song a few days ago that I liked.  I think it was "Pull Me Under."  Seems like it's that way with them for me -- I'll find something I like here and there, but I have trouble really enjoying a lot of them at once.  I'll still give them a try now and then.  My taste evolves.

I've tried it. Their music does not appeal to me. And don't like Labrie's voice and that's weird, because on Arjen Lucassen projects (Ayreon) he's singing it's great :-\. Lucassen knows how to 'use' the perfect voice on the perfect place 8).

Anathema - Weather Systems
Ayreon - 01011001
Gazpacho - March of Ghosts
'I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

Today:
Overhead - Of Sun And Moon
Gazpacho - Night
Muse - The Resistance (new album in September, can't wait! 8))
'I will surrender my heart to the sky
Oh, our love doesn't end here, it lives forever on the wings of time'

Toto - Wings of time (Kingdom of Desire)

JP: Syncromind Project - Syncronized             Some rather good instrumental metal
NP: Neil Young (with Pearl Jam) - Mirrorball

Pull Me Under was their first and (what I didn't know) only mainstream hit (like, played on MTV). They were - as a true prog group - ambivalent about this airing:

"Pull Me Under" is the first track and first single from Dream Theater's 1992 album Images and Words. It is also featured on the Live at the Marquee CD, Once in a LIVEtime CD, Live at Budokan CD and DVD and the Images and Words: Live in Tokyo VHS and DVD. It was very well received, and received extensive MTV rotation.

"Pull Me Under", which originally had the working title "Oliver's Twist", is widely considered to be Dream Theater's most well-known song. Although the band did enjoy its success with MTV and radio play during the release and thereafter, the band has continued to keep its distance from the mainstream scene; although, it is still performed in world tours. In a radio interview, Mike Portnoy stated that "...it was just an 8 and a half minute song, and it was just a fluke for MTV and radio play to happen." The song peaked at #10 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. It was also released as a promotional single. Because it was the only Dream Theater single to achieve such success, "Pull Me Under" is the "hit" referred to in the Dream Theater compilation Dream Theater's Greatest Hit (...and 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs).

A distinctive feature of the song is its lack of a conventional ending. "Pull Me Under" simply stops at 8 minutes and 11 seconds. A later Dream Theater song, "Raw Dog", ends abruptly, similar to "Pull Me Under". Another later song, "On the Backs of Angels" from the 2011 album A Dramatic Turn of Events has been claimed by some fans as the rival and same structure type of "Pull Me Under", however it does not stop this way, instead opting for a more conventional, clean ending to the song.

Kevin Moore's lyrics refer to Shakespeare's Hamlet, and are told from Prince Hamlet's point of view. They allude heavily to the play and echo Hamlet's desire to give in to his urge to gain revenge for his father at the cost of his own sanity. Over the final moments of the song (from time 7'49'' until the end) James LaBrie can be heard singing a direct quote from Hamlet: "Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt."

;)

I still think you guys should try Falling Into Infinity. In my experience, it's the most accessible DT album. The songs are relatively well defined, Jamie sings controlled and pleasantly, and the album is more exiting (imo) than Images and Words.

NP  Rush:  Clockwork Angels

There's the fabulous music, and lots more to discover:

On February 9, 2012, science fiction novelist Kevin J. Anderson, a long time friend of Neil Peart, announced that he would be writing a novelization of Clockwork Angels. He also revealed information about the album's concept:

In a young man's quest to follow his dreams, he is caught between the grandiose forces of order and chaos. He travels across a lavish and colorful world of steampunk and alchemy, with lost cities, pirates, anarchists, exotic carnivals, and a rigid Watchmaker who imposes precision on every aspect of daily life.

The album's cover depicts a clock marked with alchemical symbols instead of numbers. It displays the time as 9:12 (21:12 in 24-hour time past noon), in reference to the band's 2112 album and its title suite. Other symbols are incorporated into the band name and album title. The cover art was illustrated by graphics artist and long-time Rush collaborator Hugh Syme.

NP  Darkwater:  Where Stories End

Second run. Hm, doesn't really grip me. In this style (moderately heavy, progressive, melodic metal with keys) I find Cloudscape (also Swedish) and Subsignal more exciting  :-\

I will give it some more runs .....

Definitively Misplaced for me, it is an important stone on the path of my musical journey. But Clutching is maybe even better. About the songs of that period, by the time of Fugazi's release, I remember being strongly impressed by Assassing.
