Bupie

Freur - Doot Doot

A forgotten synth pop band from the early 80s, who had his short moment of glory at the core of the New Wave era.

Honestly, it's a very good album in its own genre : the title track, Runaway, Riders In The Night, Tender Surrender are all recommendable songs.

By the way, Ultravox is releasing a new album : I am curious ... and perplex  ::)

Bit rock , bit dancey , bit industrial and generally amazing

Kamelot - The Black Halo  *horns*

Yeah, that's a great album, Teunis  *horns*

I'v been listening to some albums that are hohum:

Genesis:  We Can't Dance

Genesis:  Calling All Stations

What's clearly best about these albums are the lyrics. I guess that Tony was the mainman on'm. With the music he takes a back seat, unfortunately, as he seems the most progressive of the remaining guys. So we have some songs that have a catchy rhythm and occasional catchy melody, and some that are rather boring. Altho Ray is a fine singer, Dance is by far musically the better of the two albums, Stations seeming rather uninspired to me, in fact I had to give up after four songs, about the same stretch as the previous time I played the album  :-\

Arch/Matheos:  Sympathetic Resonance  (on YouTube)

There's been lotta hype bout this album, and altho it's more musically interesting than those two (I didn't say) sellout albums of Genesis, it leaves me rather cold at first listen. I'l of course give it more plays, and I plan to buy the album, but presently  :-\

If you guys disagree, you'r very welcome to respond to this. These days only Teunis (who used to be hard to get into dialogue) engages me in musical talk  :)

I sure am missing the good old lively days in the Room  :(

It took me a while but I agree.
Some weird songs upon this album but overall it is quite challenging album.
Not an album that Genesis would ever make with Phil at the helm, but in a way it sometimes reminds me of the Gabriel-era.

And Ray Wilson is such a talented singer!

Sorry to disappoint you, Nicky, but I can't disagree with you on the last couple (really, more than just those IMO) Genesis albums.  I thought they were done by then, and I still do.  A little pop in one's prog is fine, but finding a hint of prog in lackluster pop ain't so great if you ask me.

If it makes you feel any better, there's often no response to my musical comments either.  Granted, I don't make as many as you do.  With yours, I often just don't know enough to respond since you often talk about bands rather far from my musical expertise.  I do try to give em a listen when I get a chance, but since they tend to be "challenging" types of music for me  ;), I can only handle one or two at a time.  On the other hand, now and then I do take your recommendations:

Recently played (and acquired):

The Mars Volta - De-loused in the Comatorium
Opeth - Heritage

Interestingly, although it is, as expected, going to require many plays to "get," I liked the sound of The Mars Volta album more than the Opeth on first play.  Of course, I'll play both several times before trying to draw any conclusions.

Also, recently played/acquired:

Anathema - Alternative 4

Was a bit disappointed with this on first play.  It doesn't seem to have the depth of the other albums from this era of the band.  The most exciting track to me so far was the bonus track cover of Pink Floyd's "Your Possible Pasts."  Of course, that's just one play, hopefully I'll find more in the album in subsequent plays.

I tend to agree with that.
There are some popsongs that reminds me of prog in whatever way but I wouldn't buy an album of them only because some proggish elements.
They have to do a lot better to convince me. ;)

I still feel that the broad audience that listen to the Genesis albums, the last couple of albums I mean, are clueless about the beginning and that saddens me.
For instance, a colleague of mine never knew that Peter Gabriel was the first singer and that Phil was just the drummer, not even the first drummer, during that time.

Go figure.

NP  Eumeria:  Rebel Mind

Scott Ward, in Sea of Tranquility:

Sometimes putting a band together is a lot like being a bartender. You can mix certain ingredients that you think would go good together and the results are horrid. Then there is the times you get the blend just right and the results are something that goes down easy and taste great. This debut from the group Eumeria is definitely the latter ... To say that they have found the right elixir is an understatement. This is a band that together can and has produced a dynamic progressive metal album that will bring visions of Dream Theater as you revel in the musical prowess of these guys along with the powerhouse vocals of Tatum. The comparison is easy but not meant to make you think that these guys are just clones, far from it. I mention that because of their songwriting artistry, magnificent technical abilities and the fact that both bands are from the same genre. That said, no fan of DT will think twice about picking up this absolutely stunning disc.

The album opens with Kevin Bartlett displaying why he was chosen as the man behind the drum kit as his intro sets the tempo and the mood for what is to come. As the rest of the band enters into the song "Legion" one by one with guitarist Fullwood introducing himself next followed by the perfectly textured keyboards of Williamson. This all leads to the moment when Tatum seduces you with his amazing vocals. By the time this has all come together you will be one of the growing "Legion" of Eumeria fans. This one sucked me in from the get go and I am truly grateful to have had it become a welcome addition to the music library.

Hostsonaten ~ The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Chapter One

Yep, this album is inspired by the poem of author Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Once, a long time ago this poem inspired Iron Maiden to write a song with the same name, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

One of the worlds first shock-rocker.
Actually, I adored the song Schools Out, made me play the air-guitar in front of the mirror when I was still a child (;) ) but overall the guy lacks talent.
The only thing interesting about this man is the way he performs, the songs however, despite some awesome tracks like How You Gonna See me Now, Halo of Flies (seriously awesome!!  *horns*) and the aforementioned School's Out, are in pretty bad shape.

Yep, I'm not a fan, but then again I don't know the man's entire discography.

Now, there's an interesting question and very legitimate too.
Who Dunnit? is quite possibly the worst song Genesis ever made. They made sure that it was the worst, so that every other song couldn't be considered worse. Which is really smart.
When you ask any Genesis fan what his favourite song is, you get all different answers (because there are so many!). When you ask them what the worst song is, there's only one possible answer. This emphasizes the feeling of 'so many good songs, one really bad song'.

Who Dunnit? is actually meant to be a little joke. It's making fun of the simplicity of Punk music.
While it is of course a bad song, it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Every band makes a joke song now and then.
