NP  Anubis Gate:  The Detached

I get more and more fascinated by this album. It's amazing how theosophy comes to life in quality scifi and prog in these times. It's now clear to me that the "detached" are what we call "masters" in theosophy, like they are free of the bondage of time and space, and can travel freely across and thru time and space.

Anubis Gate of course took their name from The Anubis Gates (1983), "a time travel fantasy novel by Tim Powers." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anubis_Gates

The music is - actually quite understandably - heavy and harsh, takes a lotta effort - altho there is no growl.

Jacob Hansen's singing is also harsh. At first I was not so sympathetic to it, but now I can see that it actually fits well into the concept.

Wow, The Detached, Caamora She, Scenes From A Memory, Nostradamus, man, these albums open great vistas .....  *horns*

Now listening to some religious music. It's sunday after all. ;)
Santo (as sung by the choir my girlfriend was in at that moment. 8) )

Santo, santo, santo
Mi corazon te adora
Mi corazon te sabe decir
Santo eres, Senor

Very simple really, but still beautiful.

Surprising that it's in Spanish  ???

What's this piece, Paxi ?

The translation (Google) is:

Holy, holy, holy
My heart adores you
My heart can tell you
You are holy, Lord

Well, yes...
We Dutchies like to sing in Dutch, English, French, German and, occasionally, Spanish or Italian.

Yes. It's that piece. :P
Here's a YouTube link of the same song:

This is not the choir my girlfriend was in, this is a Dutch tv programme "Nederland Zingt" (The Netherlands Sings). With lots of old people singing. :P
I like my girlfriend's version much better. ;D
But I do like the melody, which is, of course, the same.

What I meant was that those types of verses are usually in Latin, occasionally Italian, and at first glance the text could appear as Latin to people (like me) who can't distinguish the Romanic languages sufficiently  ;)

Ah, I get it. I agree with you that most of the time these songs are in Latin. But this happens to be a traditional folk song from Argentina. And therefore it's originally sung in Spanish. But it's of course an adaption of a Biblical verse. I think it was Isaiah 5 or something.

Hot video OK, but the music is rather "local," and the singer has a rudimentary krautian voice  :-\

I agree with you that most of the time these songs are in Latin.

If you play your Santo all the time, then most - in fact all - of the time these songs are in Spanish - and then we don't agree, Paxi  :P

NP  Without Face:  Violin of Erich Zann

www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ3PuzyTHb4

Donno who Erich Zann is/was, but he sure gave rise to a nice song  *horns*

I got to Without Face cuz I was curious to see/hear where Julie Kiss came from musically. To-Mera is one of my pantheon groups, as you guys (should) know  ;)

"Without Face were one of the most famous internationally known Hungarian progressive metal band. They were formed in the city of Veszprém, Hungary in 1997. The band featured a dual female and male vocal line-up similar to that of gothic metal, with progressive metal and thrash metal overtones and they managed to mix these different styles in a very original own version. Their lyrics are influenced by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Without_Face

Btw here's a great To-Mera song:

To-Mera: Blood    www.youtube.com/watch?v=kU26_Z5_YLo

I know I'v posted it before, but with you guys  ::)

Here there is a clad goth chick, Julie, but otoh she can SING  *horns*

The blond guy with the guitar is Tom MacLean, who is the main person behind the music of To-Mera. Julie does the lyrics - very well  ;)

Tom is also the bassist of Haken. I read that recently Richard Henshall aka Hen has joined To-Mera on keys, so now they'r even more brother/sister groups, but with very different styles, as you guys can hear  8)

OK, checked it up, actually quite interesting:

The Music Of Erich Zann is a short story by American author H. P. Lovecraft. Written in December 1921, it was first published in National Amateur, March 1922.

A university student is forced, by his lack of funds, to take the only lodging he can afford. In a strange part of the city he had never seen before, on a street named "Rue d'Auseil", he finds an apartment in an almost empty building. One of the few other tenants is an old German man named Erich Zann. The old man is mute and plays the viol with a local orchestra. He lives on the top floor and when alone at night, plays strange melodies never heard before. Over time, the student gains Zann's trust, and eventually learns of his secret, that the old man has discovered melodies and rhythms of sound of an almost otherworldly nature. Zann plays these sounds to keep back unknown and unseen creatures from Zann's window, which is said to look out into a black abyss, most likely another dimension.

The setting of the story is presumably Paris, though the city is never named. Auseil is not a true French word, but it has been suggested that Lovecraft derived it from the phrase au seuil, meaning at the threshold. Auseil is read like oseille, meaning sorrel or, colloquially, money.

Now listening to:
Dream Theater - "Images And Words"
3. Take The Time

The intro already sounds like today's Dream Theater.
Love this song.

PH

Dream Theater - "Awake"
11. Space-Dye Vest

Dream Theater's third album is already very different from their first. It's much heavier. I guess that's why Kevin felt a bit out of place in the band. His song, Space-Dye Vest, is not heavy at all. Solo he makes also very mellow music up till he participated in the OSI project/band. Kevin and the band wanted to go in different directions and I think it was for the better for both of them.

I think I&W and Awake are equally great, but how much I love Kevin's work both as a solo artist and as part of OSI, I still prefer Rudess-era DT.
The very first album, still feels like a demo album to me. I absolutely can't stand Charlie's voice... :-\

Manatee

JP: Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement
     R.E.M. - Accelerate
     R.E.M. - Dead Letter Office

NP: Steve Hackett - The Tokyo Tapes

This is a really fun album.  It's got some Genesis, some solo Hackett stuff, and even some King Crimson (John Wetton is with him).

DT first starts getting real interesting to me with Track 3 of Awake (don't like the first two tracks). I now rarely play I&W.

Then again, I find pretty much everything from Awake on great  *horns*

I don't either like his singing on the first DT-album - don't like the music much either - but the three albums of the group Dominici, "O3: A Trilogy", are fabulous, also the story, pantheon with me  *horns*

You can find the music on YouTube, Paxi. During your hiatus, I posted some links, so I aint gonna do it again  ;)

NP  Elton John:  Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

One of the greatest rock albums eva  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Once again, I could only stand in awe of the great genius of Elton John. These songs hold their ground still forty years later (the album is from 1973), and surely will the next forty years, songs like Funeral For A Friend, the title song, Candle In The Wind, I've Seen That Movie Too, classic songs with me  :)

If there's anyone around who's not into Yellow Brick Road, then s/he doesnt deserve to be called a (full-fledged) proggie  ;)

You just said it's a rock album, not a prog album.
Wikipedia says:
Rock, glam rock, soft rock, R&B, pop rock

That doesn't do it for me normally. I like the occasional pop and soft rock, but Elton John never really clicked with me that much.

This is foolish talk, Paxi  ;)

Yellow Brick Road is one of the most wonderful, adventurous, and exciting albums eva, it's classical, prog, everything, even glam if you like  :)

It's in the top-league of classic albums together with Dark Side Of The Moon and Zep II  *horns*

And btw "rock" includes prog; rock is everything that's not classical, jazz, or hip-hop (there are some more different genres, but you get the drift).
