Indeed. H-Marillion is much better.

Except that I think you'l like Shadowlight, Paxi, and maybe Sparks too, as they'r very melodic and not heavy  ;)

Actually, I was especially referring to the Sparks YouTube links. I almost can't believe it's the same Nicky who was such a metal fan. In my ears Sparks sounds really awful. A 1970's pop band, and not very good at it. Man, in that time Genesis was doing many interesting things.
But everyone has his sins. Nicky might have a few more, perhaps. ;D

Shadowlight sounded alright (nothing like Arena though). And there was even *something* I liked about that Negura Bunget band you talked about. The music and feeling was ok, but I think they should get another vocalist.

Actually, Cap, both singular and plural are acceptable in English  ;)

The associations differ tho:  Singular indicates the group as an entity, while plural refers to it as an assembly of individuals.

I too prefer the plural form, as I note what the individual members contribute with.

But here I think it's really a matter of taste  :)

But the content of Tom's post is absolutely wrong  ;D

NP  Marillion:  Clutching At Straws

Not as good as Misplaced Childhood imo, but it has the wonderful Warm Wet Circles  *horns*

:P

Or maybe I'm more open and versatile with my music tastes  ;)

Sparks obviously are an acquired taste. Took me some time too some thirty years ago. When I picked them up again recently, I liked a few of their songs, particularly Mother Earth, but several others sounded weird. But then, after a few runs, I liked almost all the songs on the three classic albums  :)

Paxi, play Mother Earth three times, and then tell me  ;)

Absoltely? ??? I guess that's what happens when you're posting in the middle of the night... ;D

In al seriousness, I believe I'm in the minority here by claiming that I like h-Marillion more than Fish-Marillion. But does that make my opinion wrong? I don't think so...

It's not that I dislike the Fish-era but I simply like Steve Hogarth more as a singer and I prefer Marillion's current more contemporary sound to the old (and dated) prog that's displayed on Script for a Jester's Tear, Fugazi and Misplaced Childhood.

QuoteNP  Marillion:  Clutching At Straws

This is my favourite album from the Fish-era by a mile, today it's still in my Marillion top 5. Only Incommunicado is out of place on this album imo but other than that it's perfect. 8)

NP: Metallica - Death Magnetic

Still pretty much  *horns**horns**horns**horns**horns**horns*.

JP: Rammstein - Liebe Ist Für Alle Da

Anyone into them? I've never been much of a fan of their music but this latest output just ticks all my boxes. It's a great album!

NP: Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

I can't get enough of this album. 8)

By the way, Nicky, nice post about Foo Fighters the other day. Although I don't agree with you on the songwriting-part I can see where you're coming from - a prog point of view (I believe). The thing is though, Foo Fighters haven't got anything to do with prog and I'm glad they don't. They 'just' rock, big time! *horns*

I also just checked out some Nachtmystium on Youtube. I'm not really sure what to think. The music sounds great but somehow it didn't really grip me. But maybe repeated listens will do the trick... :)

The Butterfly Man

I admit, I'm not the most frequent poster these days, but man, this place gets more quiet on a daily basis. Oh well... ::)

JP: Pendragon - Passion

There's no Indigo to be found on this album, but the overall quality of this record is of a very high standard. Pendragon's best effort to date? Let's give it some more time to sink in but I believe it will end up pretty high on my list.

NP: Pagan's Mind - Heavenly Ecstasy

Great metal-album!

I'm with you Tom.
I like Script very much and Misplaced Childhood even more (even Kayleigh and Lavender, I think they are one of the best 'mainstream' songs there are). But Fish-Marillion is more Rock, where h-Marillion is more 'art', so to say. The new Marillion is the beauty and the old Marillion is the beast.
Some like the hardrocking raw beast, and some like the sweet dreamy beauty.
I like both sides but I find that Marillion is better at beauty and art than rocking.
When I want to rock, I'll listen to something more metal.

I'll tell you. I've watched it three times already. I must say it got better. The first time I was almost crying because of how bad it is. The second time I had a fun time laughing at all the funny stuff and how silly it was. The third time I could already sing the simple lyrics better than the singer playbacked them.

I had a fun time. It didn't really move me, but it did activate my laugh muscles. So there was motion caused by electric impulses. Can I call it e-motion?

Yeah, I'l admit that the lyrics of Sparks are rather simple-minded. But those were the times, Paxi. You have to remember that this was 1974/75 - long before anyone thought of you. Noone at the time had the sorta philosophical lyrics that we proggies cherish today  ;)

Yes, about the same time Genesis came up with "The Lamb...", King Crimson did "Red", Pink Floyd where in their "Wish You Were Here" period, even Mike Oldfield did interesting things with his "Ommadawn" album.

;D

It's just that you don't seem to acknowledge that Misplaced Childhood is ART to me - and I guess to Cap and Bups too  ;)

ART can have bite, be the beast, if you so like.

E.g. Priest's Nostradamus is art in all senses to me: Musical handicraft, philosophically/religiously intriguing, powerful, and filled with all sorts of innovative details. You should give it a try, Paxi. I think with an open mind and some (more) patience, you could go for it.

But more about Priest later  ;)

Yes, about the same time ...

Yeah, to some extent, but you have to have a different perspective here:  To my mind, Sparks had a sense of melody comparable to only Beatles, and Request-Banquet-era Stones (another group that had a fabulous sense of melody, but then checked out after a few albums  ??? ). Try to listen to Mother Earth in that perspective  ;)

Gotta run off now, take my Mum to the airport (visits my bro in Paris, and then my sis on Long Island  :) ), and then I hope to catch the great Protest the Hero at Copenhell  *horns*

Here's a sample of the biggest (positive) surprise to me at Copenhell: Baptized in Blood, from Ontario, totally freakin live, and excellent in studio too:
