And not only was Fish tremendous, but also Rothery and the other guys were doin exciting stuff.

Then they broke up, and Fish took the excitement with him, while Marillion settled down to become a middle-aged, middle-of-the-road band, maybe with subtle lyrics, but the music  ???

Well, I know that some of you guys disagree - each to theirs ... but Cap agrees with me  :)

Well, I would say that both acts kept being exciting for a while after they broke up but their last respective outputs don't excite me much  :P I think that Fish is really missing Rothery's talents, especially in soloing.

Oh! Now you're just being provocative! Naughty Nicky!

Actually not, I meant it seriously, Paxi. And I'm seriously wondering whether you guys are becoming middle-aged middle-of-the-road  ;)

Iac his Field Of Crows from 2004 is very exciting, there's far more power in it than in H-Marillion's sleepy albums.

But I won't make any more unsolicited remarks about H-Marillion. I'm just wondering ... just like with Sparks: They made three highly original and wonderfully melodic albums 1974-75: Kimono My House, Propaganda, and Indiscreet; and then - unbelievably - they converted to some britpop disco sorta jive, and proceeded to record a series of imo unlistenable albums  :'(

They picked up in 2002 with Lil' Beethoven, but it's nothing like the endearing Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth and Hospitality On Parade  :)

Fortunately there are some ten classic Sparks songs that I can listen to again and again  8)

NP  Amorphis:  Far From The Sun  (2003)

It's good, but not extraordinary. At this point in my listening to Amorphis, it seems to me that they became stellar when Tomi Joutsen became their lead vocalist. Their first studio album with Tomi is Eclipse from 2006, and it's  *horns*

Any other opinions on this matter ?

Abigail by King Diamond

Nicky you should love it  ;)

Hm, till now King Diamond (or Daimond, as Mad likes to spell'm  ;D ) has rubbed me the wrong way, but, of course, I take your recoms seriously, Funky, so I got KD (specifically Abigail) on my list of groups to check out  :)

NP  As I Lay Dying: The Powerless Rise  (2010)

Metalcore band from San Diego.

Despite the extreme band name, they are quite good, and have a surprising degree of melody (except for the first track). Remind me of Into Eternity, but more cohesive and more melody  *horns*

"As I Lay Dying have stated on numerous occasions that all of the members of the group are Christians. When asked if they're a Christian band or Christians in a band, Tim Lambesis stated on the band's FAQ, 'I'm not sure what the difference is between five Christians playing in a band and a Christian band. If you truly believe something, then it should affect every area of your life. All five of us are Christians. I believe that change should start with me first, and as a result, our lyrics do not come across very 'preachy.' Many of our songs are about life, struggles, mistakes, relationships and other issues that don't fit entirely in the spiritual category. However, all of these topics are written about through my perspective as a Christian.' During an August 2010 radio interview, Lambesis once more made a statement regarding the band and his faith, expressing that his world view as a Christian 'always comes across in our lyrics in some way or another.'"

Shows once again that Christians now are fully up to it in metal  8)

I might not be the right advocate for Marillion, but haven't you ever heard of "Marbles" with The Invisible Man, Ocean Cloud or Neverland? Or "Anoraknophobia" with the excellent If My Heart Were a Ball It Would Roll Uphill or Quartz or This Is The 21st Century?

They might not be heavy like Nevermore or anything, but it certainly is Prog with a capital P. In any case, it's far more Prog (and much better) than Kayleigh or whatever.

The first one not the new one.

I love Lifeline but have not given enough time and listening effort to his other solo work.
That changes today  ;)

I love this album.  It's one of the ones in the CD player in my car, so I play it often (including yesterday  :) ).  I think I'm ready for another Anathema album.  I have Judgement, A Natural Disaster, and We're Here Because We're Here.  Any recommendations for a next choice?

but haven't you ever heard

I actually have some 5-6 H-Marillion albums, and I'v listened a fair bit to them. A few years ago, I got real enthusiastic about the Fish-Marillion albums, and I expected some of that energy in the following albums. Unfortunately, as I probably have made clear by now  :P  I was disappointed.

A bit later, I played some H-Marillion stuff for Ms 007, and she went for it. I guess Hogarth has a voice that appeals to women (  ;) Pacenass  ;D ). She liked the mood and the flow too. In fact, she likes H-Marillion more than Fish-Marillion, partly cuz she finds Fish's singing too much ! - in contrast to me, who finds Hogarth's singing too little, too laid back  :-\

So, as it's been rather hard to find music we can share (I know you guys can recognise that), I'v played even more H-Marillion. Marbles is one of the albums we'v listened to quite a bit  :)

I think I know what ya mean, Paxi: prog, in the sense of trying out new stuff and varying. OK, admittedly H-Marillion have that. But to me, rock has to Rock (with a capital R), and H-Marillion simply doesnt rock to me. Instead my mind goes driftin away from the music and yearns for somethin that Rocks, somethin like Misplaced Childhood or Clutching At Straws - which, Bups, I too like better than Fish's solo albums  :)

Why did the guys have to break up - Cap, let's cry together  :'( :'(

NP  Negura Bunget:  Maiestrit, Maiastru Sfetnic

The title says all what it's about  ;D

Romanian metal, very dark and moody, ya got Draaacula breathing up yer neck - wooooo - super stuff, takes some time  *horns*

Here's the Amazon review by Nontheistdavid "saytr38" (Missouri), which hits it well:

"Great avant garde black metal!

June 13, 2010

I cannot stop listening to this cd. Negura Bunget are a black metal band from Romania who has served up a swirling, organic, and downright eerie black metal stew. Picture a mix of acoustic Opeth and electric Primordial. This album really is instrumental in essence because the eerie growling takes a back seat to the instruments. The swirling keyboards are a perfect complement. This could serve as Vlad The Impaler's theme music. If the shadowy hills and brooks of Romania could speak, this is what it would sound like. Very atmospheric and hypnotic. The last two songs are acoustic versions and they are absolutely amazing! Just as good as the acoustic masterpiece by Opeth called Damnation."

Anyone heard of this "Opeth" ?  ;D

It's true, as Nontheistdavid indicates, that the last two "acoustic" songs are unbelievably beautiful. But the whole album is incredible !
