Today I played:

Marillion - Marbles
I really like: The Invisible Man, Genie, Fantastic Place, Ocean Cloud, Angelina and Neverland (But the rest is great too!)
Marillion - Happiness Is The Road
Stand out tracks: This Train Is My Life, Essence, Woke Up and Trap The Spark. Actually the first disc is overall very good. The second disc is a bit of a struggle for me. What do you think?
Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways
This is an album with no best tracks, since they're all really good! I love the mood of this album.

Marbles is instead a cracker and as the special edition has my name in it  ;D then what else would you expect

NP: Neon Streetlight Serenade - Early Demo's

My singer/songwriter projects' demo-songs! Sorry, I can't share them (yet). All is going incredibly well, we already got a lot of positive reactions from people who have heard it. The project consists of me - of course - on guitar/vocals and a good (lady)friend who can sing really good and also plays the violin. So far we've written about four songs but once we have six or seven songs in our pockets and we're pleased with them we will record a proper demo. After that we need a bassplayer and a drummer to make the music come alive and then we're ready for *real* gigs. 8)

Dream Theater:  Live Scenes from New York

From a concert in 1990, shortly after the release of Scenes.

I hardly need to say that it's awesome  *horns*

I must for a DT-fan. It has the entire Scenes, plus a lotta fine earlier stuff, and all the guys are in great shape, 3 cd's  8)

One of the greatest treats is Track 7, John & Theresa Solo Spot, where Jordan plays some wonderful etheric background synths, and Theresa Thomason and Petrucci do a duet/duel. Whew, I say !!!

Theresa is the smooth singer on the studio Scenes, and she also sings - marvellously - on Live Scenes  :-*

Tom, Mad, Paxi, and Bups, have you heard of this group ?  :P

Iac get this album  >:(

To be honest, I'm a studio album kind of guy. I like the occasional live album (but I like watching a live dvd more), but I don't really listen to it that much. I have SCORE and think it's nice, but I'd rather watch the dvd or just simply listen to the album versions...

Bupie

PH, the "back in time" thing was easy but it made me laugh and I would have done it anyway if you hadn't  ;D

Sorry Nick but I very rarely play SFNY because of James' voice which is sometimes just unbearable on this one. But I remember that it contains a tremendous version of ACOS, doesn't it ?

NP Nothing because all the family is in the room (I mean the room, not the Room) but I hope to find a little time during the day

I think that the procedure is to first listen several times to the studio album ... and then run the live version, and discover what the band has added since ... and DT certainly have a lot extra to offer in their concerts  *horns*

I havent gotten that far, Bups. The live version of Scenes is so awesome that I'm stuck on it, and as Scenes is my fave DT-album .....

Did you guys know that "the Hypnotherapist, Edward's reincarnation, has killed Nicholas and has completed the cycle yet again. This could be further interpreted in relation to Victoria, whose goal might've been to forewarn Nicholas of a murderous cycle, rather than to ease his uncertainty about the afterlife.

The static from the phonograph marks the beginning of what fans have called a meta-album where the last note or noise of one album is the same or similar to the beginning of the next, The Glass Prison opens Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence with the same static sound, also being the beginning to the Twelve-step Suite. The Dream Theater meta-album spans 4 albums, from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory to Octavarium. Octavarium ends the meta-album by having the same piano note at the beginning and end of the same album, with the last lyrics stating 'This story ends where it began.'"

- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scenes_from_a_Memory

You guys might think that I'm listening to a lotta music, but the thing is that when I find somethin that blows the roof, then I'm simply stuck with it for days on end, e.g. DT and Haken - who ring a similar bell btw  ;)

Cuz of Live Scenes I removed "fave group" from Priest in my LP. There's at least one other group that gets up there  :)

At work, I pass thru several areas where the radio is runnin all day, with all the usual junk music that fills the ether. It's kinda become part of the general soundscape at work.

And it contributes to the humdrum workmode daze.

Yesterday all'o'a'sudden I stopped sharp in my tracks. From the Store Scene (Big Stage) came sounds that mesmerised me. I just stood frozen for a while and listened. I knew the song, but couldnt remember what it was. Only when I got home, it dawned upon me that it was Vangelis, and when I went on YouTube, it turned out to be the top song - understandably.

And then I shared it with you guys ... or more precisely: You, Paxi, caught on. (The Room seems to be in a bit'o'a daze these days too. Apart from Paxi's, the posts are kinda random hits. Well, I guess I'm not either all that active presently.)

So that's the story behind that NP. Hope ya liked it  :)

NP  My Dying Bride:  Anti-Diluvian Chronicles

Compilation album, 3 cd's. First listen. Well, it sounds good, but rather much the same grind, track after track. I'l give it some more runs, but I doubt that it will grip me anything like Anathema and Amorphis do (two of my pantheon groups, and in the same vein as MDB).

You're right... It seems we're all talking past each other. We post little bits of text on the web, but nobody's really replying.
"Telling something" is usually a monologue and I think what we need here is dialogue.

Come on, we're all passionate about music. Aren't we all interested in each other's views and stories?

Quote from: Nicky007 on Wed, 2011-03-30, 14:46:19So that's the story behind that NP. Hope ya liked it  :)

Very much! Thank you.

So now I'm listening to Vangelis' "El Greco" (Not to be confused with the film soundtrack "El Greco", also by Vangelis (also great!)).
A wonderful album. It has ten tracks, or rather movements. This album is dedicated to Δομήνικος Θεοτοκόπουλος (Doménikos Theotokópoulos) a Greek painter who moved to Spain, hoping for a better future.

It's a very symphonic album. 'Orchestral' actually is a better fitting term here. Sometimes really bombastic.
It's not an instant 'classic' like "1492: Conquest Of Paradise", but there are some similarities in instrumentation. For example the flutes and the harp.

Sometimes I prefer this album over "Conquest". It's just... different. Also harder to get into, I think.
Try to find some samples. I think YouTube has some. It's well worth it.

I'm always surprised at how good this album is - mmmmm  :)

An album inspired by Shakespeare's "The Tempest". Listening to Lease Of Live on my wireless headphones (for the reason I just expressed in another thread  :P) and the beauty of the music makes me feel relevied and peaceful, something than the Empress can't understand, especially when it's related to metal or progmetal music.

NP  Anubis Gate:  Options - Going Nowhere

www.youtube.com/watch?v=atoBpCA8Ls0

This is the long epic (9.26), the crisis (turning point), of The Detached. Some wonderful religious moods on it ... and some real metal  8)

"It was like moving a mountain with your bare hands. A hundred years, with nowhere to put them [the years] and no tools to help carry the burden. It was a massive undertaking. The Sphere eventually caved in after enough time was moved out of the way."

Anubis Gate:  The Detached  (on repeat)

This album is not at all as immediately pleasing as Andromeda Unchained, but now, after some ten listens, I'm enjoying it immensely. And, as I noted initially, the story is mindblasting in the truest sense  *horns*

It struck me how independent the prog community is of social contexts. E.g. in Denmark, standards are miserably low re rock. Even my most intellectual friends and acquaintances here can't raise themselves to listening to anything more demanding than Queen and Coldplay  :(

So where do Anubis come from ?  Certainly not the general music scene in Denmark. No, obviously they get their inspiration from foreign groups like DT and Circus Maximus.
