What worries me though is that everyone here seems to be ignoring this album. What's that all about?

Tom, before you get yourself badly snared in double standards, maybe you should do:

KoK:  Reptilian Majesty   www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7EIByM1Xc4

and Mad's fabulous pantheon-class discovery:

Radiance:   The Burning Sun    www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzMV2wKZLBU

Two of the absolutely most exciting groups atm, right at the cutting edge  *horns*

Double standards have nothing to do with it. I made an effort and checked out Keep Of Kalessin a few times (I know I mentioned that at least once), but I just don't like it. I don't see myself overcoming the vocals so instead I play music that I do like. What's wrong with that?

With the new Oceansize, I didn't tell anyone that they have to listen to it, I'm only surprised that no one has mentioned this album, since Oceansize is quite a popular and well-known band in the prog scene nowadays, something that can't be said about Keep Of Kalessin, no matter how much you like them.

By the way, I like the Radiance-track.

I'm just surprised  ???

You like Scar Symmetry. I'l agree that Christian Älvestam is a better singer than Thebon, but you have to listen to all the other stuff that's going on, e.g. the amazing richness of melody in KoK, like with Nevermore.

Well OK, let it rest for a while, I'm sure you'l get around to enjoying KoK (without the c's  :P ) too one day.

Meanwhile, give Radiance some runs  ;)

This stuff is so amazing that it's going into my pantheon  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Thanx again, Mad - more than ever  :)

I'd never have thought that a combination of Mats Levén and a knife-thrusting Finn, Sami Raatikainen - who the heck is that guy, with such an amazing talent - and with a high dose of Meshuggah, would end up in my prog pantheon ... but that's exactly what's happened - whew, I'm breathless  8)

But then again, there's so much more happening in this music, some terribly seductive synths e.g.  :)

And again, guys, isnt being prog about taking that step into the deep unknown - isnt it ?

Sami Raatikainen - who the heck is that guy, with such an amazing talent

OK, I went out on the home site of Radiance, www.radiance.fi.

Sami is a guitarist in the group Necrophagist, a group that I have avoided cuz of the name. Now, of course, I'l have to check'm out.

Sami worked for three years on Burning The Sun, and he played all the instruments, except the vocals, done by Mats Léven, who was carefully selected by Sami for the job. Sami also did all the mixing, mastering and production  8)

"Back in 2007, I had the basic concept of the album in my mind. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what it would sound like. It was only a matter of translating the vision into notes, and it didn't take too long -- according to my project notes, I started writing for the album on 07/28/2007 and ten days later already had the basic structure and sections of the album written out. A month later, I had already recorded the final guitar tracks. I was working non-stop and would only pause to eat and sleep. The rest of the year went into writing and refining all the synths, orchestrations, additional layers and the tons of details present in the final version."

There's a lot more about this project at www.radiance.fi.

Their most diverse album, and I also think it's their best yet. What worries me though is that everyone here seems to be ignoring this album. What's that all about?

Tom

I have one album of Oceansize, called Frames.
It's quite good actually, rocky post-rock I'd say.
I've heard a few positive reviews about the new album (cool title btw) and I've placed it on my yet-to-buy list.

Yeah Frames was my favourite album until they released Self Preserved... a few months ago. If you end up buying it, don't be put off by the first track... ;)

Wow, really good indeed. The guitars sound like Meshuggah and Cloudkicker, which is a very good thing. *horns*

Hey guys, by the way, I remember telling that I played an acoustic set in a pub last summer (in exchange for free beer! ;)), and now it turns out someone from the pub recorded it and he gave me the recording so now I'm finally able to let you hear some of my music. Don't expect any prog, it's just me playing an acoustic tune. You can listen to it here if you like: http://soundcloud.com/neon-streetlight-serenade/weeds

I'd heard several people laud Mats Levén, not only you, Mad. Strangely I didnt get it, but now I can definitely appreciate his vast range and precision in expression  :)

Music is emotion, but appreciating all the fine nuances in prog also requires some intellect, I'd say.

And altho one's taste should be personal, there are correlations, like people who like Arena will usually like Threshold, and those who like Dream Theater will usually like Symphony X. And I'd say that if you like Scar Symmetry, you'r bound to like Keep of Kalessin - if you'r not too turned off by the vocals  ;)

NP  Radiance:  Burning The Sun

Simply gets more and more enjoyable  8)

I think that the world is in too many ways going in a disturbing direction - people have become sooo materialistic and narrow-minded, that's why they can put up with X-Factor, Idol, and all that superficial trash - so I'm always elated upon finding such wonderful music, and in fact so much of it in the prog community. It reminds me that there are people who care, who demand something extra of themselves, and who thus give us fantastic experiences, like Sami and Mats - and you guys care too  :)

Well, I'm going off to my Mum's farmhouse for a few days, where there aint no computer. She just bought a new car btw (a Polo from 2005), so she's doing real well, Thank God.

Let me wish you guys a Joyful Christmas !

And behave yourselves - I don't wanna hear complaints from yer families ;D

I'l be in Malmö and back in the Room late Christmas.

Tried out YouTube songs from Keep of Kalessin, Radiance, and Oceansize.  KoK seems a bit harsh for me at present.  Radiance has potential.  Did anyone else notice that the singer sounds a bit like Axl Rose?  Oceansize sounds promising.

Great album, my only gripe is that it would have been even better if they made it a single cd with all the great songs, and leave the other (still good) ones out.

NP Jethro Tull - Roots to Branches

I have this one for maybe more than a decade and I don't remember playing it once  ::)

I guess that I was wrong since first (?) listen is very promising : nice melodies, a jazzy feeling on some songs and, of course, the instantly reckognizable Ian's flute sound. Should get more airplay until the end of the year.

Happy Chrtistmas to everybody  :)

And back at a computer that has loudspeakers  :-*

Man, was I hungry for some modern rock  :o

Else I had a great Christmas with my Mum  :)

Mum & I listened to Bach's Christmas Oratory and some Christmas carols, and then after she'd gone to rest, I did the first Hawkwind albums, and the debut album by SW-80  ???  - a Danish group from the early 80's that I bet you'v never heard about, and in fact you don't need to know about  ;)

Now I'm together with Ms and her three sons 25-30 y/o. We just played a knowledge board game. I was quite surprised at how much factual knowledge they have, at that age  ???

Are you guys just as knowledgeable ?  ;D

You know, Greenie, now that you'r tryin out new stuff, and even chancin yer luck, you really should try out Priest's Nostradamus. As I wrote earlier, I think it's an album that requires some maturity to appreciate fully - so when Mad and Tom don't anymore need to get their diapers changed, they can join in  ;D

I think that you and Iggy, even Cap, could come around to enjoying it. It's my overall fave album (by any group), so there must be somethin about it - I mean, I'm not an idiot, am I ? am I ?  am I ? am I ? am I ? am I ? am I ? am I ? am I ?

KoK are actually well known in the progmetal community, and highly esteemed, for good reasons  ;)

- but I guess too heavy for Roomies  :-\

Anyways, I don't any longer care about how popular a group is. I know that artists at the cutting edge are initially usually only appreciated by very few. That's the way it's always been. Fortunately over the decades and centuries, they accumulate recognition  :)

Wow, what a rocker!

PS: Will see if it makes it to my after-christmas wish list. Selling album downloads directly for 10€, in FLAC format is totally fair, if you ask me. Wonder how much of the 17€ I pay in stores would make it to the artist.
