Just realised that Jim Matheos has released two solo-albums:  First Impressions (1993)  &  Away With Words (1999).

I of course have to get them (when the budget permits).

Anyone into these albums ?

NP  Gojira:  The Way Of The Flesh

Third run. Highly original and intriguing, now and then gripping  *horns*

Much more my thing than Demians, who are/is too much Mike Oldfield retro to me. I liked Oldfield thirty years ago, but today I want somethin more b*sy.

Actually Gojira remind me of Between The Buried And Me, and at this point seem more original than BTBAM.

Tom, try'm out  ;)

Three of my musical highlights this year are the discovery of a pantheon Finnish group, Amorphis (well, actually Tom discovered them for me), a pantheon Danish group, Anubis Gate (very much Mad's influence), and a great French group, Gojira (no Roomies, but Gojira are becoming one of the real BIG metal bands)  8)  :)

Still doesn't sound like metal to me, but that's ok.   ;)

NP  Haken  on  MySpace

Awesome !  These guys are reaching for the stars  *horns*

Despite their obvious virtuosity, they keep the music tight and precise  8)

The DT-reference is clear, but also nods to Shadow Gallery, Opeth, Bigelf, Queen, even some cool freestyle jazzguitar ala Åkerfeldt  :)

Should easily become a Room staple  ;)

From their MySpace page myspace/hakenmusic: "In their brief existence, Haken are already highly respected within the British metal community, and their unique and imaginative genre-bending approach to music has garnered praise from all corners of the globe."

Well deserved !

And the MySpace soundbites are sufficient to place them in my pantheon  :)

Transatlantic - The whirlwind.

Tell me, did you enjoyed it?  ;)
I was at the concert a night before, in Tilburg 013 and it was truly fabulous.
I wonder if they also played Giant Hogweed cover?

Yep it was fantastic. They didn't play Hogweed.

The Whirlwind
All of the Above
Guitar Solo/We All Need Some Light
Duel With the Devil
Bridge Across Forever
Stranger in Your Soul

I think was the setlist. I guess they may have changed it because they were filming a DVD  ;D

Lasted best part of 3 and a half hours.

Neal Morse took over the drums in the encore while MP went crowd surfing in a dharma suit (from Lost).

I have to say Neal Morse is disgustingly talented.  *horns*

Pretty much the same set as in Tilburg, with the exception of Hogweed of course.
Didn't had a decent spot during The Whirlwind but after the first break I moved to the middle of the crowd, aprox 15 meters from the stage.
Had a marvelous time out there.

QuoteNeal Morse took over the drums in the encore while MP went crowd surfing in a dharma suit (from Lost).

Hehe, he wanted to do that in 013 as well but he wasn't allowed.  ;D
Made some spiffy jokes about it though.
He did do an amazing bass pedal solo.  ;D ;D ;D

That really blasted its way through my whole being.  :o ;D

NP  Arcturus:  Sideshow Symphonies

A highly original group  *horns*

Even so, very much a Norwegian metal group  ;)

Outside of the US and Britain, to my mind the Norwegian metal community is the most original. When you hear groups like Arcturus, Enslaved, and Dimmu Borgir, you really know you'r hearing something very different from anything else  8)

And these guys know it too !  They interchange, start new groups together, help each other out, often without being officially credited, and keep the energies together  :)

It seems only few Roomies know this world  ;)

Very melodic, atmospheric, gothic, well balanced, varied - absolutely prog !

A bit, but not unpleasant, somewhat like on Threshold's Dead Reckoning and Amorphis' Skyforger.

Actually the mood is quite close to Skyforger (Tom  ;) ) - maybe that's why I like Sideshow Symphonies so much  ;D 8)

I like all of the songs on their MySpace, but Sideshow seems even a grade higher  *horns*

Shipwrecked Frontier Pioneer is a blast:
