NP  Judas Priest:  Demolition & Jugulator

These two plus Nostradamus and Angel Of Retribution are imo the best albums by Priest (they'r also the four latest studio albums, 1997-2008), and they'r up in the top league of progmetal.

Surprising that they aint Room staples (yet)  ???

NP  Aspera  on  MySpace

Aspera is a new Norwegian melodic metal band who have recently released their debut album Ripples.

Presently I'v only been able to find the title melody:

http://searchservice.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=sitesearch.results&orig=search_Header&origpfc=UserViewProfile&type=Music&qry=ASPERA&submit=S%C3%B6k

I might find more .....

Judging from the title melody, I would agree with Angry Metal Guy:

"In the end, Ripples indicates what I see to be a bright future for this band of Norwegian youngsters. This is their debut record and they make a really good show of it with catchy tunes, smartly written tracks and they're tight, tight, tight. One hopes that they begin developing some personality, working on convincing their vocalist that he isn't Russel Allen and keeps fighting on. These guys have a bright future ahead of them if they can keep it together."

I can hear the CM and SW influences.

It's good enuff that I'd like to have Ripples sometime  8)

Really taken, for the first time  *horns*

It's strange, I tried out Anthrax now and then, at cd-stores, and borrowed albums, but till now I always thought that they sounded rather regular, nothing special  :-\

This time around, I experience them as very special, and exciting. Amazing how ones perception can change !  But I guess that's what happens to proggies  8)

And it's true:  There is something very New York about'm.

I have to get more into this group .....

Hey guys, how about a bit more of, like, trying out some new things, truly extending yer taste ?  ;)

Nicky.

Ah, Anthrax!

That brings back rather pleasant memories i'd say.
Back in the old days where things were just simple, you had thrash-dinosaurs like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax ( and a few outsiders like Exodus, Heathen and Forbidden) and I was quite fond of Anthrax. I didn't really enjoyed Joey Belladonna's voice and to be quite frank the only good Anthrax singer was and is in my opinion John Bush (former Armoured Saint singer) but musically it was great.
In New York terminology it would be called Moshpit or something like that but it was just metal. Hardcore metal. Don't be fooled with the 'hardcore' word 'cos obviously it had nothing to do with what ever you find in the hit parades.
It also was and probably still is, metal with smile. A huge smile.
Just look at Scott Ian's picture and you'll know what I mean. ;)
And Dan Lilker was the Slash of the bass players. Tall and with a lot of hair in front of his face.

Best albums 'till date are State of Euphoria, Persistence of Time (with the brilliant cover of Joe Jackson's Got The Time) and Sound Of White Noise (with John Bush).

Let's through ourselves into the moshpit!  *horns* *horns* *horns*  ;)

Thanx, Mad, that was very useful to me  :)

Maybe you should try out some of their new stuff, like their latest album (from 2003), We've Come For You All. Seems like they progressed a lot, and tried out lotta crazy things along the way ::) 8)

I used to like them, a lot.
But things have chanced I'm afraid.
I got all the old albums on vinyl and even a few on CD (Ram It Down (with the astonishing Blood Red Skies and the Johnny B. Good cover) and Painkiller (worthy notes: Painkiller, Touch Of Evil and One Shot At Glory) but nowadays I'd rather listen to a good thrash album of Machine Head or Megadeth then Judas Priest.
Been there, done that, got over it I'm afraid.

NOPE, Mad !!!

You should never ever say that about a prog group !

That's one of the things you'v failed to realise. Hope it's OK that I disabuse you there  :)

Nostradamus is very different from Ram It Down and Painkiller. They travelled a looooong way with Nostra. While Ram and Pain can be enjoyed right on by all metalheads, Nostra is a very mature album that requires a lotta effort to appreciate  ;)

I know from the Priest Board that even most Priest fans havent gotten there yet  :-X

I agree with you about Nostradamus because it is in no way a true Priest album. You call it prog, well I wouldn't go that far but they've indeed stepped away from the real Priest sound that they've made in the old days and in that way they did evolve.
Some may call the album mainstream though but I also think that they've tried something different for a chance and guess what: it worked.

But still...

It's basically because of Rob that Judas isn't quite what I like anymore.
Basically because I think that somehow his style of singing doesn't really match the 'new' priest.
He's grown older and his voice isn't what it's used to be but I truly believe that if Priest would've recorded Nostradamus with another singer, note: not Ripper Owens but a younger and a more progier vocalist, then it would be a huge bit better than it is now. Earlier on you've mentioned Anthrax: State of Euphoria would never be as good as it is now when John Bush would've sing it and in reverse, The Sound Of White Noise would be a total disaster when Joey Belladona would've sing it. That's a fact.

Funny thing is: when I was younger (meaning: still a metal head ;)) I liked his way of singing. Heck, I even listened to King Daimond.
But this style of singing isn't really what I like anymore.

Hm, for me Priest wouldnt be Priest without Rob. OK, Demolition and Jugulator with Ripper are great albums, but they'r very different from Angel Of Retribution and Nostra with Rob. Rob is a unique singer - I'd say, even more so now at 60 - and to me he's an essential part of Priest, and he's the only one I could imagine doing Nostra convincingly together with the other Priest guys.

Well, if and if not: Iac Nostra has turned out to be a terrific album; as I wrote earlier, the only album I'v given 100/100 (by any group), and I stick to that  *horns*

Hint:  Get properly into the lyrics. I think that's also essential for "getting" the album  ;)

I'd die if I had to listen to King Diemond today  ;D

Gee, Pete!  :o

I must say this: I'm surprised that you even listen to it.
I mean, it usually is not the kind of prog you'd normally listen to, am I right?
Especially when it comes to the vocals.
I agree, when the singer sings 'normal', then he does a pretty good job.

Hmmm, why shouldn't I, it's not that far away from my daily dose of Arjen, PT and so :)
It's really an amazing album, lots of surprises, musically, and I like that a lot, like all the rhythm shifts and riff attacks, all backed by creamy keys. Yip, like it :)
