Since Cap's so evanescent, I'm gonna engage him a bit:

ELO - Yup, were my fave group some thirty years ago. I had a period of several months when I listened to virtually only A New World Record, Out Of The Blue, and Discovery. First time I heard Tightrope and Rockaria, I'd never heard ELO before, and I was stunned !  Probably cause I had a solid background in Beethoven & Co., and I was thrilled to hear that stuff put into a harddriven rock module. Guess that's also why Floyd did it for me.

Now I'v dwelled in that haven sufficiently, and I think that's why I'm drawn to darker heavier stuff (and e.g. IQ don't grip me).

Everlast - Havent heard it for a long time, but he enraptured me a few years ago, with his raw soulful voice.

Billy Idol -  *horns* twenty years ago. Havent really listened to him since then  :-\

Limp Bizkit - Tried'm a few times, but it didnt click. Think I'l give'm a run soon again.  However, I'v read several places that they emerged in the slipstream of Linkin Park, but never were more than a mediocre clone of Linkin  ???

Danzig - Played'm too a coupl'o times. Seemed to me pretty regular heavy/hard stuff. Anything special about'm ?

Neal Morse - A bit like with IQ. I like the lyrics, but I find the music too old-school. I'v played the (keyboard) organ myself, listened to a lot of it, both classical and old prog, and now I don't need more of the neoprog stuff. I'd rather have some more edgy keyboard stuff like Jordan Rudess and Derek Sherinian  8)

Opeth, Percy, & Gazpacho  *horns*

Well, for starters i think it reminds me of King Daimond.  :P

Just kiddin'.  :-[ ;)

I'll get back to you on this.  :)

Well, if it's that good, I might have to give it a listen.

Oh, you were joking? I knew it couldn't be that good.

It indeed can be described as a prog-daimond.
It's definitely one of my fave's too.

NP> Dream Theater ~ Falling Into Infinity Demo-series.

The Butterfly Man

I've been having another one of my pop/rock/alternative periods lately, but because I get the impression that no one here is waiting for me rambling about Foo Fighters, Dredg, Editors, Drugstore Fanatics, Mew, Muse, Pearl Jam and the like, I kept quiet for a while. But now I'm back in the prog/metal territory...

I listened a lot to Opeth's Blackwater Park recently and man, what a great album! I still remember the time when I couldn't stand the growls (and didn't know about the existance of Damnation). I would always listen to the first half of The Drapery Falls and as soon as the death-metal section started I would skip straight to the outro. As time progressed my musical taste progressed with it and after some time I was starting to - to my own surprise - enjoy the growls. I haven't looked back since and nowadays (when I'm not in one of my pop/rock/alternative periods, mind you ;)) I really appreciate growling vocals: As long as it's done in order to serve the song and not just for no reason.

So for me The Drapery Falls is quite a special song. *horns*

Any other stories about songs or albums that changed/enriched your musical taste?

Tom

Played:

Into Eternity:  Buried In Oblivion

Album from 2004. Promising metal group. Lots of variation and melody, but a bit too much noodling  :-\

Between The Buried And Me:  Colors

From 2007. Also metal. Has some nice and some exciting moments, but too growly and noodly for my taste  8)

I'd be interested in hearing what other Roomies think of these groups  ;)

Tom, I think the Room is there for us to discuss all rock music.

And the groups you mention are popular in the Room.

Presently I'd say, rather more than less discussion  ;)

Too growly and noodly? For you? ;D

BTBAM's style of growling is a bit more hardcore than for example Opeth's. But I really like it! Maybe you need to give it a few more spins, I know I needed that before all the pieces fell in place. Musically they remind me of Dream Theater which is never a bad thing. Like I said, give it another change, it will be worth it! :)

No but seriously, like I said, I often feel like talking to a wall when I mention non-prog bands here. But maybe you can prove me wrong... :P

I often feel the same way when I mention UFO (warning ! pun inside  ;D) or rock or new wave bands from the 80's but to be honest, it's not a problem for me. Maybe nobody cares, maybe I will get somebody curious or interested, maybe not. I don't have high hopes about answers so I am not disappointed when I don't get one. I just try to avoid proselytism since I am intimately convinced that there is no such thing than good or bad taste in music. And since I am not a musician myself, I have even less legitimacy to give advices. But I do have opinions, though.

So yes, keep on talking about prog or non prog music, even if you don't get answers. There are good examples in the Room, the Helloween discography review by Deenfan was one of them. Maybe Nicky could do the same for one of his pantheon bands (Sx, Nevermore ...) ? Or anyone else ?

Yeah, when there's too much growl, it starts grinding on me  :-\

Christian Älvestam growls a lot too, but he varies it a lot with all other singing styles, and somehow I think he growls better than most other growlers (dunno, might be subjective; can one compare growl ?)  :-\

Hey Deenie, I aint askin you  :P

Yeah, in fact I just extended my library loan of Colors and Buried In Oblivion for another month.

I know this sorta music needs a lot of listens - and time in-between .....

But Tom, DT didnt occur to me one moment while listening to Colors  ???

But then again, I think you DT more than I do  ;D

Return Of The Pride (2008)  8)

BG is very standard rock with banal lyrics. After the first three songs, I couldnt stand anymore.

ROTP is not prog, but quite competent musicianship and lyrics. I'm not gonna buy this album, but it merits a coupl'o listens.

NP Transatlantic - The Whirlwind

So far, I hadn't been in the right mood to listen to it properly. I was in search of less demanding music. I had tried it once and had not been impressed, especially by the bonus CD.

But The Whirlwind is starting to click right now and I think it's gonna blow me big time  8)

Track playing right now : Is It Really Happening ? I hear a lot of Genesis in this one.

Funny you say that.
In my opinion you should listen to the whole album.
One of the surprises on this album is the cover of Radar Love, once quite a big hit in the states by Golden Earring (from the Netherrealms btw ;)) but the cherry on the pie is definitely the last track Cry For Freedom.

You're right, not prog but great rock nevertheless.

Radar Love was a huge hit in the UK as well although sadly I don't think most people realised where they came from. It must have been played at every disco ( ::)  :P) that I went to in the 70's.

NP Gazpacho Night I started playing this on Wednesday at work and am finally up to track 5. It has been one hell of a week.

Yes I DT a lot more than I used to since I discovered the genius that is Devin Townsend... ;D

Maybe you were a bit too obsessed with the vocals to notice the DT-reference (as in Dream Theater...;)), because to me it's pretty obvious at times! But like I said, maybe you need to give it a couple more listens! :)

Bups, I'm sorry if I missed it during my little break from the Room but what are they like? You mention them a lot so you must really like 'em! :)

They are a hard rock band that was really big during the late 70's, thanks to an extremely talented guitarist, Michael Schenker, and one of greatest singers in rock history, Phil Mogg. Despite a tumultuous history -to say the least- and many line-up changes and splits, they are still alive and kicking with another excellent lead guitarist in the person of Vinnie Moore. They have always been underrated but have a bunch of faithful fans that stick around. One of their songs, untitled Born To Lose, pretty sums up their career : losers but with talent and class  *horns*

One of their live albums, Strangers In The Night, is considered as one of the best hard rock albums of all times. And for the anecdote, every Iron maiden gig begins to the sound of the UFO's song : Doctor, Doctor.

Maybe it won't be metallic or progressive enough for your taste but, yes, I strongly recommend anything they made apart from No Place To Run and Misdemeanor, their only weak albums IMHO. Lights Out is a great place to start  :)
