Pain of Salvation - Remedy Lain and Scarsick.

I have to say that I don't quite get these guys yet. I'm sure I ought to like them given that other roomies like them.  ;D

I much prefer Opeth , Riverside , Anathema etc etc

NP  Trivium  on  MySpace

http://www.myspace.com/trivium

Got some'o their best songs there, e.g. Throes Of Perdition  *horns*

Let's see if there're any b*s left in the Room  ;)

Just played Trivium via the above link.  Normally I put my b*s away when I hibernate, but I made an exception.  These guys are a pretty damned heavy, that's for sure.  The parts with "growl" (actually, I think it's more just screaming) are a bit much for me, but when they transition to melodic with clean vocals, I kind of like them.  Interestingly, they tend to do this rather abruptly in the middle of songs.  Some of the less extreme screaming sounds like James Hetfield.

Also sampled Room V by Shadow Gallery on their website.  Only samples not full songs though.  Crikey, these guys are from Allentown.  I could pretty much drive over there and have a beer with them.

NP: Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever

I was late to the Transatlantic party, so I'm just now filling in my collection.
"What is that sound?  It's confusing, and boy is it loud!"

Nice, Greenie  8)

Honestly, I find it hard to pin down what it is that makes Trivium special compared to the scores of very heavy metal and metalcore growling, screaming bands today. I'v listened to a lotta this stuff recently, and I'm repeatedly amazed at how all these musicians do astounding things with their voices and instruments.

Still, it's a rare joy hitting upon bands like Trivium and Scar Symmetry. I hear it almost right away, something that makes them special. I have a feeling that it's cause they go for the melody, while still keeping all the rage and passion  ???

It would be interesting if someone else had a take on this  ;)

I agree with you guys:  It's not so obvious.

My fascination with PoS is mainly due to their originality. They treat subjects that are very unusual for rock groups, like the evolution of mankind (the album BE), and they are deliciously biting in their satire (e.g. the songs Cribcaged and America on Scarsick). And here and there they show an amazing sense of melody and mood, like in Enter Rain, one of my alltime fave songs by any group. It would be great if they had more melody like that in the future  8)

But be a little more patient with PoS  ;)

JP  Coheed and Cambria:  Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One

Hm, doesnt really work with me musically. Welcome Home is of course a fabulous song, but else I find that they don't quite get there musically. They remind me a lot of 3 (and there're good reasons why they'r close: Woodstock and Josh E), but there's much more melody in 3.

And the story of Good Apollo  ???

Tom, tell me what your take is on C&C  ;)

NP  The Wallflowers:  (Breach)

Yup, that's sic.

The main person here is Jakob Dylan, who has a famous Dad  ;)

It's very much the same formula as Dad's: singer/songwriter with backing combo, nice atmospheres, melody, quizzical lyrics. Jacob is more flowing/unprovocative than Dad, but you sure hear the Dylan-factor in his singing.

That reminds me to listen to them again.

For what it is worth Nicky my take is that they are almost awesome but not quite. Like you said there is something missing but not quite sure what.

Which is a giveaway sign that it'll not be among their best.

???

You wanna tell us why, Funkster ?  - or are you just provoking again ?  ;D

NP  Judas Priest:  Nostradamus

Strictly speaking, one can't say "classic" one year after release; but I just know that in 100 years, this will be one of the albums that still stand proudly from this great period of rock, alongside Abbey Road, Dark Side, and a few more.

Nothing is overdone here; it's just an experienced, mature, tight, and self-confident band, who have taken the opportunity to look into themselves ..... and then they'v given it their all  *horns*

Why are Aerosmith the best rock band of the last 40 years ?

1. Steven Tyler - voice , frontman - took the jagger template and added some American pizzzaz
2. Joe Perry - as good a riffmeister as anyone out there
3. The music - Toys in the attic , dream on , walk this way , mama kin , love in an elevator etc etc
4. The influence - no Aerosmith = no Guns n roses , no motley crue etc
5. the staying power - nearly 40 years in this business and still touring and making music
6. Who else over the last 40 years gets close ? Led Zep ? except no music for 30 years , AC/DC maybe
7. because i said so  8) ;)

It would seem to me that you havent quite reached the prog template  ;) :)

I mean, how can you mention AC/DC when we've had Dream Theater for 25 years (originally Majesty) - the flagship of prog  *horns*

Why are UFO the best rock band of the last 40 years ?

1. Phil Mogg - voice , frontman - took the jagger template and added some British sophisticated class
2. Michael Schenker - the riffmeister if there is one
3. The music - Doctor Doctor, Rock Bottom, Love To Love, Lights Out, Let It Rain etc etc
4. The influence - no UFO = no Iron Maiden, no Def Leppard etc
5. the staying power - nearly 40 years in this business and still touring and making music
6. Who else over the last 40 years gets close ? Led Zep ? except no music for 30 years , Aerosmith maybe
7. because it is so  8) ;)

;D

Nicky007

OK, let me tell you why I'm the best rock musician of the last 40 years:

1) I can drink beer.
2) I can sing after having drunk nuff beer.
3) I can crawl on all fours when I'v drunk even more (and Freddy (my toy monkey) thinks that's cool).
4) I can sleep when I'v drunk even more than that.
5) I can dream that I'm the greatest rock musician on Earth.
6) I can wake up believing that my dream is reality.
7) I can wake up for real and realise that you guys are nuts.
