NP: Marillion - Marbles

Still need to finish my homework on this one.  Seemed like a good choice for where my mind is at right now, which is, frankly, somewhere the post-prime Genesis described at the "Land of Confusion."

Last night: Magenta - Another Time.. Another Place...

Sounded good, but as is typical, needs more plays to sink in.  I'm getting a definite Renaissance-like vibe from them.  I suspect this is a group I'll enjoy periodically but won't need the complete catalog of.

Sorry Nicky, but life has thrown enough b*lls at me lately that when I stop to listen to music, I just haven't been in the mood for the heavy stuff.  I expect at some point I'll be ready for a catharsis and hit myself with a nice barrage of noise, so fear not.   ;)

I also have Magenta on my agenta, due to Christina. I expect the music to be rather lite for my taste, but her singing is so fabulous on Caamora She that I have to hear her on her home turf  8)

It's funny, I'm opposite there:  When I'm low, I benefit most from something that's so exciting that it takes over completely, like DT and Nevermore.

When I'm above, I'l have the surplus to go with something more atmospheric or sublime, some special moods or beautiful singing, and usually I'l be reading books or magazines while listening to it.

Take your pick -- I was borrowing your terminology.   ;)

Often I'm that way too, but right now I feel kind of beaten up and just want a couple of days of peace.  As I said, when I'm ready, I'll break out of it by playing a bunch of my head-poundingest albums.

Note to Steve: Good call on 'Ocean Cloud'.  It alone was worth getting the 2-CD version of Marbles for.  It's also ideal for my current mood.

I guess we can safely make it 6,000,000,001 now.

Then again, if they really had that many fans, they either would not be prog, or they'd be Dream Theater.   ;D

As much as I adore the collected works of DT, I suspect the quoted figure is more likely to be the number of discs in the next Special Limited Edition Collector's Live Box Set ;)

Quite a challenge:

NP  The Arcane Order:  In The Wake Of Collisions

The heaviest album in my collision, no, I mean collection ... yes, guys, even heavier than Scar Symmetry, who'd be next  :o

A Danish group - surprising at first  ???

Denmark is a country that runs like a clockwork: Everything is thought thru and put in system. So people are content, and you'r not up to much surprise in this country.

But behind all this there seems to be a lotta creative agitation simmering. More and more ya got these gads stickin up their heads and sayin, "Hi guys, so you thought that middle-class middle-aged life was just a bunch'o routines. Ha !!!"

This country just might have a creative revolution comin on. Hope so iac. I can see a lot happening in the underbrush, musically e.g. The Arcane Order, Mnemic, Mercenary, Anubis Gate, Wuthering Heights, and several more very ambitious groups  8)

Otoh a lotta young dudes in this country think that they can make music by banging insanely on a drumset, or shredding like maniacs, or hollering profanities into a mike.

These guys are different:  They are serious, talented, and hardworking musicians, I mean, ya hear it - at least I do !

OK, there's the obligatory bass drum assault, and Mach 10 shreddin, and insane yellin, but once ya get into that  ::)  you can find lots of music - yes, guys, I said: Music - and surprisingly intelligent and intriguing lyrics.

I'm the type who likes to cover the total span of rock in my cd-collection, so if you'r like me, than I can recommend this album as an excellent representative of the ultra-heavy end.

However, it requires b*s like fists, so check up before you getit ... or let your lady check up .....  ;D

One thing you have to take into consideration tho is that if ya play this stuff at 100 dB on yer homeset, lady will flee screamin outta the main door and fling herself into the arms of your neighbor - and who knows what that can end up with  ::)

Hm, maybe even I can't quite live up to the fist thingy, as at this point I can only take about 15 minutes of this album; then I need sumthin lite like DT (whichever)  ;D

Well, anyway, Jonesy, Tom, Mad, and Iggy, here's a warm recommendation  :)

While it's true that the main album is short compared to their other ones, the live DVD that comes with it in the digipak version is really good and about album length as well.  All in all, I think it's a good value.   Also, I'm sure you'd agree that 40-something minutes of excellent beats 70 minutes of suck.   ;)

Whilst I'm not unhappy with the value-for-money aspect of my digipak extravaganza, I did notice the actual music was a little on the short side.  And I'm trying not to be distracted by 70 minutes of suck.. ;)
