NP  Coverdale - Page:  Self-titled

Great album. I bought it a coupl'o years ago and initially only listened to it sparsely; now I gave it a proper run. And it really surprised me.

Jimmy was in great shape again. And for the first time, I realised that David is a fabulous singer.

It's of course mainly Jimmy's album, and it harks back to Zep a lot. The first two songs recall Jimmy's blues/boogie background. Then comes a wonderful, real moody blues (not the group), Take Me For A Little While. David has a hoarse, deeply emotional voice here that creeps under yer skin. Thereafter come songs that remind me a lot of Houses and Graffiti, also with the singing, as David approaches Robert Plant's style.

Interesting, from Wiki - Coverdale & Page (album):

"It is believed that Page had collaborated with Coverdale in order to irk Robert Plant into collaborating with him, mainly due to Plant's belief that Coverdale has ripped off his vocal style. Adding to the Led Zeppelin sound of this album was the John Bonham-influenced work of former Montrose drummer Denny Carmassi. There were also rumors that Coverdale and Page would be joined by John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham in a reformed Led Zeppelin, but this did not pan out.

The album reached #4 in the UK and #5 on the US Billboard 200 chart."

An essential album, I'd say  *horns*

The main thing that always puzzled me about this project was, how the hell did Coverdale get top billing over Page?  I heard some Whitesnake recently, and I have to admit it was actually pretty decent, but Jimmy Page is, you know, JIMMY PAGE.

Alphabetic order, and Jimmy didnt need/want any more promotion. They're both true musicians and don't care about the hype, as long as they can make out.

But you're right: This is probably the best album David has made eva  *horns*

Well, working with a genius like Jimmy Page, it's not that surprising, when you think about it. I don't think that Jimmy has ever disappointed, when he (eventually) got around to making some music  8)

Agreed.  Overlooked and underrated, but not chez Jones!

Another O&U Coverdale release is 'Restless Heart'.  Although nominally under the Whitesnake 'Wave My Cock' franchise it contains some of the most emotive bluesey singing I've heard from the man.

This is the single CD version.  Being a gullible twat bit of a Tull completist I had to have it even though I've got the full 3CD boxed set ;D

I never quite got to that point.  I'm not prepared to say JT did nothing good after the 70's, but my vinyl collection more or less ends where the classic band devolved into Ian, Martin Barre, and a bunch of kids they met in a pub.

You mean Eddie Jobson?  Or those young whippersnappers from Fairport Convention?  ;) ;D ;)

Well, technically, yes.  I did some research before I made the above comment and was interested to see that the replacements actually had some legit credentials.  Nevertheless, I felt the comment too cute to pass on.   ;D

This may be the first Tull conversation I've ever had which included the word 'cute'  ;D

Not surprising since a) I don't think I've ever heard a female mention them (ladies of the Room, here's your chance!) and b) IA always seemed a tad too gamey to be considered huggable.  For better or worse, his shaggy face does seem to sort of hover around one's consciousness whenever Aqualung is played.  In any case, Tull is clearly prog royalty.   *horns*

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Chronicles Volume Two.

Unfortunately the only CCR CDs I own are the two Chronicles volumes.  The second has better sound, but the first has better tunes IMHO 8)

So much enjoying this album  *horns*

Jimmy's wonderful playing evokes memories of bygone Zep stellar moments, and David has won me over entirely. (I had heard people characterising him as a showoff and stuff, which unfortunately kept me from listening properly to this album for a couple of years.) His singing on Take Me for a Little While and Don't Leave Me This Way is so deeply gripping.

And then there's a lot of Physical Graffiti sounding stuff, so this album should be somethin for you, Iggy (noted your Zep choice of DID)  ;)

Remarkable how much territory Zep covered with their eight official studio albums (a progressive group, if any).

Strangely, in those days I lost track of Zep after Houses Of The Holy (their fifth studio album, guess that Floyd started monopolising a bit much  ;D ), so I never really got properly into PG. I know that a lot of their fans consider it their best (including Iggy seemingly). When I got back to rock some six years ago, so much other exciting stuff had cropped up in the meantime.

I'v decided to get into PG and the last Zep stuff now. Jimmy's magic guitar has really enticed me again. Tellya guys what I think later .....
