NP: Morrissey - Your Arsenal

An unusual chap, Mr.Morrissey, but he definitely has moments of brilliance.

It took me over a decade before The Smiths & Mr M clicked with me, but I am rather partial these days.

For me, both Morrissey and The Smiths are hot and cold -- some great songs and some I have no use for.  Happily, there's no rule that says we can't just listen to the ones we like.  Your Arsenal happens to be an album with mostly good ones IMO.  I first became aware of The Smiths with the song "Bigmouth Strikes Again."  Some great humorous yet deadly serious lyrics in that one, which seems to be Morrissey's hallmark.

NP: Genesis - Selling England by the Pound

One nice thing about doing vinyl replacement is you don't have to worry that your purchase will be a dud.   *horns*

NP: Arena - Songs from the Lions Cage

Sounds good so far.  I must say, I don't really see the "Fish-era Marillion clone" in it, which seems to be a frequent description in reviews.  Yeah, it's prog with a lot of keyboard in it, but that just puts them in roughly the same genre.
I think that comment would probably only be made by someone who hadn't heard much of this type of music.

Crikey!  I've never heard/read that b0ll0cks, but these days I'm rarely suprised by anything dreamed up by inbreds in their reviews ::)

NP: Arena - Pride

Funny, I'd been led to believe that Arena's sound had changed a lot over the years.  Listening to their first two now, I don't think that's really true.  Certainly they've honed their craft, but the general style is not that different from the later albums IMO.  Lion's Cage may be a bit more keyboardy than some of the latest ones, but even in these early albums, there are quite a few sections with a fairly heavy guitar in the forefront.  In any case, I love their current style, so this is perfectly fine with me.   *horns*

Interesting coincidence: Yesterday I whisked thru one of my fave cd-stores in Cop. They had some music playing that caught my attention. I went to the counter and asked what it was, and the guy started ravin about it. It was Spirit Of Eden  8)

So I put it on my SL.

Nicky.
I love these kind of coincidences! And to connect it with another topic, Talk Talk and Spirit Of Eden is definitely a case of removing the limits of exploration, without a trace of going heavy.

NP: The Devin Townsend Project - Ki

This is my very first encounter with Devin Townsend's music but what a pleasant one! After listening to (and enjoying) a few soundclips for the last couple of days I just picked up the album at my local cd-store. If I had to describe it with only one word it has to be 'intense'.  Regardless of the seemingly laid-back playing there is a continuously dark atmosphere and while these thirteen songs rarely become really heavy, Ki is an extremely intense album, always building up to an outburst but never quite reaching it.

So far I listened to the album twice, but I can already feel a Ki-addiction coming up... :D

Also, this album is the first of four conceptually linked albums under the moniker of "Devin Townsend Project". The second album is planned to be released later this year.
