NP  Mastodon:  Pendulous Skin  (on Blood Mountain)

Thought I was hearin some Mars Volta here (yeah, and take the title), and it turned out that Ikey was havin a ball on this track. Some nice guitar-playin by B Hinds (both) too  ;D *horns*

Wiki - Mastodon (band): "The album's last song, Pendulous Skin, contains a secret 'fan letter' from Josh Homme, who provided guest vocals on the album. At 21:25, he says: 'Dear Mastodon: My name is Joshua. I'm a big fan from Southern Cal. Really diggin' on your new scene. That's why I hope you don't mind when I got your new demos for your new CD, I had to sing parts on them and send them to you as a tribute. I hope you're not mad about me also uploading them onto the Internet. But hell, it seems like you guys are so cool that you might dig something just like that. Sincerely, your fan, Joshua M. Homme. P.S., Keep it real...REAL (studio effects are used)....*laughter*....REAL.' When asked about the message in a Pitchfork Media interview, Homme said, 'I was just fucking with them. Then they asked if they could put that on the end of their record, and I was like, 'Yeah.' I did the vocal [for Colony Of Birchmen] and sent it back to them, and that message was before the song started.'"

NP: Devin Townsend Band - Accelerated Evolution

A bit of nice blistering wall of sound insanity as a lullaby.   ;D

I read what Prog Archives had to say about Hevy Devy earlier, and they actually used the term 'wall of sound', which I often have used myself to describe some of my favorites.  R.E.M., especially early on was very much a wall a sound band, although not as dangerous a wall to run head-first into as Devin's is.  I even enjoy some 'shoegazer' music, which tends to be wall of sound but mellower and somewhat electronic.  I've been contemplating getting Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, which is touted as a shoegazer masterwork, the catch being that even the fans seem to imply that it's a love it or hate it kind of thing.  Anyone familiar?  30-second samples didn't really give me a good feel for it.

Can't help you there, but I know what you mean about 30 second samples as I hit that wall with Devin's stuff.  However, I note that 'Ocean Machine' is a mere 4 UK pounds as an Amazon download...

An excellent choice for a first taste.  He not too nutty on that one, other than the music itself being rather unique.  You already know my opinion on this, so I'll refrain from any additional Tick Tockish buildup of expectations.   8)

SYL is a bit much for me as well.  The stuff he does under his own name is not as much of the extreme metal noise and more melodic, although still loud and heavy more often than not.  I'd say a lot of his stuff is very 'layered', which I tend to like since that often equates with the wall of sound effect.  I can't guarantee you'll like this stuff, but since you're into metal in general, I doubt it would be too heavy for you (unlike SYL perhaps, which is pretty extreme by almost anyone's standards).

I saw'm. I actually have Ocean Machine, and I'v listened to it some five times. At this point I enjoy it, but not to any sorta Nevermore or Opeth degree, with whom I think one can compare it  :-\

But of course one should remain open. Devin is definitely a musician to reckon with. I'd like to hear some of his other stuff .....

Metal.  Quality metal.  I never know whether something should be termed 'Prog Metal' or not, but Mastodon certainly aren't just standard metal, even if they aren't prog to the extent that Dream Theater are.  'Blood Mountain' certainly isn't out of place next to my Nevermore and Opeth albums, so I'll definitely be getting some more.  Worth an audition, I'd say! 8)

In my book, Mastodon are definitely progmetal, but else I agree with you, Jonesy, not to the extent that DT, Nevermore, and Opeth are. But these are three of the absolute best !

I wouldnt recommend Mastodon (and even less Nevermore) to Paxi, as they're very heavy most of the time, and most of the singing (Mastodon) is shout.

Paxi, if you're looking for something heavy, I'd instead recommend Kamelot, particularly Ghost Opera. It's heavy alright, but relatively slow, lots of melody, great, clean singing by Khan, and metaphysical lyrics  ;)

Well, I'm listening to Mastodon now, thanks to MySpace.
Sounds really good actually. Pretty heavy, but with nice melodies and pretty cool singing.
Think I need to delve into this a bit deeper...

I'm sorry Nicky. Dunno what it is with me, but I like this better on first listen than Kamelot after five listens. ;)
