Ok then, what is Mastodon like?
Something I should check out?

How would you describe Blood Mountain?

Metal.  Quality metal.  I never know whether something should be termed 'Prog Metal' or not, but Mastodon certainly aren't just standard metal, even if they aren't prog to the extent that Dream Theater are.  'Blood Mountain' certainly isn't out of place next to my Nevermore and Opeth albums, so I'll definitely be getting some more.  Worth an audition, I'd say! 8)

NP: Renaissance - Azure D'Or.  Completely the opposite of Mastodon ;D

You're in for a real treat when you purchase Crack The Skye, that's for sure! 8) In the meantime I will try to get hold of a copy of Blood Mountain...

NP: Dream Theater - Chaos In Motion

I'm trying to figure out the Pre-order thing.  Do I risk not being able to get the limited edition of the new IQ if I don't put in a pre-order?  I also discovered that there's a new Devin coming out later in June.   *horns*

NP: Gazpacho  :o : Night

And yes I'm playing Tick Tock next.  Sorry it's not your cup of lightly perfumed water, Steve, but I still think it's freaking awesome.  Meanwhile, the list of recommended bands that I need to look into is getting distressingly long.  Mastodon needs to be tried if only because it's a great name.

Perhaps I need to put this into perspective.  I don't dislike it.  I'm not about to get rid of it.  I just don't rate it that highly, it's one of those albums that's likely to get infrequent plays at Jones Towers.  But I'd sooner be listening to Gazpacho than landfill R&B divas ;D

That's fine, tastes differ.  Everyone else on the board is freaking out about the new Dream Theater, and I don't even plan to give it a listen unless bribed with multiple Guinnesses.   ;D  I discovered poking around on Amazon that Liquid Tension Experiment is perhaps a reasonable approximation  of Dream Theater without vocals, which I might actually enjoy.  I listened to the samples, and it sounded pretty good, although I don't know if a whole instrumental album would really interest me, and I was somewhat put off by the fact that the last 26 or so minutes of the album are a jam.  I don't like jam unless it's on toast.  I wouldn't put Dream Theater in a landfill either, although I might put a couple of inches of topsoil on James LaBrie and see if I can grow something Nicky would like to eat on his head.   ;)

I love both Liquid Tension Experiment albums, awesome stuff.  I wouldn't quite say it's DT without vocals, but I can see where you're heading with that.  If you're not keen on jamming, avoid the Liquid Trio Experiment offering for now - that really is all improv stuff.  Excellent, though, if you like that kind of thing in the way that I do 8)

I can enjoy it in small doses, particularly live, but for the most part, I think jamming is what the musicians should do while they're working out ideas for songs, and I'll buy the finished product.  ;)

You bounder, I'm now hankering after toast with jam for my breakfast.  Time to trot downstairs and tax my culinary skills, methinks! :o

Bounder Hee! The only time I've ever heard that said is by a character in a computer game, which I could discuss at length, but I've no idea if that's you cup of biscuits.

Switching iTunes to album mode because, although I don't usually mind it when the next album in order starts right after one ends, it's really disconcerting when Gazpacho suddenly becomes Generation X.   >:(

Blind Ego ~ Numb

*horns* *horns* *horns*

Perhaps I'll buy the download of a Blind Ego album since those also appear unavailable on CD unless I send away to Peru or the Netherlands.  Is one significantly more worthwhile than the other, or should I just start with the first one?

Yes, I've been following the exact same thought process.  Trouble is, I've an inbuilt resistance to paying over a fiver for a download these days.  More than that and I want hardcopy.  Still, needs must when the devil vomits into your kettle, and all that...

Not a saying I'm familiar with.  I think I'm just going to file that away along with 'rectal delight' as something I'll give a miss to.

Of course, the geek in me couldn't resist checking what would happen in my library.  Turns out, if you're working alphabetical by artist, I'd get Geddy Lee *horns*

Over here it's quite a famous quote from the Blackadder TV comedy.

Martin Orford - The Old Road.

I'm coming late to the party on this one, but what an awsome selection of music!  Completely bowled over the first time I played it, and then John Wetton's voice came in.  Wow!  What a suprise! 8)

I'm a huge Blackadder fan, actually, but I don't remember that.  Maybe it's one of those things people have to say to each other a lot for it to become stuck in one's mind (e.g., Doh! from The Simpsons).  I haven't seen any Blackadder in a few years though.  Maybe it's available on DVD.

Yes, I've certainly moved in Blackadder and Monty Python-repeating circles. http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/blackadder/epguide/two_money.shtml

And yes, they're most definitely available on DVD *horns*

The prog world is quite incestuous as far as who plays with whom.  I fully expect to see something born soon with three heads, one that looks like John Wetton, one that looks like Tony Levin, and one that looks like Bill Bruford.  ;D

Quite.  Having played a bit of Renaissance lately, I was looking at Annie Haslam's website and there was a photo of Annie with John Wetton ;D

Interrupting the IQ album I cleverly announced I was playing in the wrong thread to listen to the Amazon samples of The Old Road (which obviously I'm coming to even later than Steve).  This might be another download candidate since it appears to be available only from outside vendors and at a high price (about triple the dl cost after shipping).
