Yeah, Tom, I'd very much like to have your take on the Queens Of The Stone Age concert.

I have their Lullabies to Paralyze and Era Vulgaris. Till now, they've been quite good but not great for me.

Nicky.

Hi Nick, I think Queens Of The Stone Age played a very solid gig. They for sure know how to build a party! I wasn´t really familiar with their music, I only knew 2 songs: "No One Knows" and "Sick, Sick, Sick". But they really surprised me. I like their kind of 'dirty' rock. For sure, I think I'll have to be in the right mood to listen to it, but since I enjoyed their show so much, I'm thinking about buying an album of theirs.

So my question would be (since you have 2 albums) where to start! And can you tell me why you think the albums you have are 'quite good, not great'?

Tom

BTW, sorry for this kinda late reply, but my internet at home is down! :-[)

Not exactly prog, but I can't play Dream Theater all the time, can I?  ;D

Good one.  :D
The ultimate FGTH song in my book is, call me a softy: The Power Of Love.

That song is soo genius.  8)

If you like Variations that you'll like this one as well. Not their best, much of the same but oh so good.  ;D

Genesis - Tales of Ordinary Madness

This is a bootleg CD of the Lamb Lies Down tour, recorded at Birmingham Hippodrome, 2nd May 1975.  Note that it's not the same as the Lamb live offering in the Genesis Archive boxed set.  The latter is better quality and more complete.

Still nice to listen to, once in a while.  I can't help thinking that, as this was happening not far from where I lived at the time, I should have scraped together enough pocket money to have actually gone to the gig.  The nearest we impoverished schoolboys came to this at the time was gathering around a cassette player listening to a tape of a contemporary BBC live broadcast.  Gabriel seemed to come from another planet - clearly this was what grown-ups listened to!  8)

Steve, may I propose Kamelot and Symphony X ?  These are the two groups that are closest to DT, both musically and lyrically, and they are (almost) as great as DT.

Musically Redemption are also in the game, but their lyrics arent quite up there.

Isnt that so, Mad and Tom ?

No need to listen to non-prog in this Great Age Of Prog  ;)

OK Tom, I'l return on this matter, but first I'l have to spin the albums a few more times. They also deserve it. So, pending ........

And thanks for your comments on the festival  :)

Yeah, I also gotta get a new screen. Feel kinda outta the game.

Been listening to Octavarium the past couple of days, but not much, as we've been out in the sun - and I made sure that there were a couple of Chimays around. This is the DT of beer  :D

True though some non-prog songs are almost prog to say the least.  :D

One of those:

Agree, Mad. Also e.g. Robbie Williams' Feel.

Funny thing is that almost everybody will point to Micheal Jackson when they say 'The King Of Pop' but i personally think that singers/performers like Robbie Williams or Prince have the right to claim that title.

Just an opinion.  ;D

I agree with you on the musical side, but I think overall the lyrics are good as well, especially on the song Used To Be. But yeah, as with almost everything it's just a matter of opinion.

By the way, I'm  looking forward to read your comments on the Queens Of The Stone Age albums! :)

I don't know if it works when you're not in Holland, but I have a link to a website where you can stream the whole QOTSA Pinkpop-show. I'll post it here tonight if you like! :)

Yes, please, Tom. I'd be mainly interested in seeing what Metallica are up to nowadays.

Tom, I have to admit that I havent listened thoroughly to The Origins Of Ruin (other groups took over at that point), but the first self-titled album was a musical rendition of some science fiction stories, and the second album was about relationships, particularly the agonies of breaking up, both albums musically topnotch and lyrically good, but lyrically nothing near the sublime metaphor-rich poetry of DT. That's what's so awesome about DT: They're simply best at everything (serious)  *horns*

I hope this works, so fingers crossed!

First, here is a video of Metallica playing Seek and Destroy live at Pinkpop. I can't find an audio-stream of their whole gig, so you'll have to do it with this video...  :D

Now here's the audio from the Queens Of The Stone Age show.

They have a video up as well. Check http://3voor12.vpro.nl/speler/ondemand/39662050.

I really hope it works outside of Holland!  :)

Good luck!

Uriah Heep - Wake the Sleeper.

I've played this to death over the last 24 hours as I think it's a bl**dy amazing album.  If you like classic, heavier Heep (and perhaps think that some of the studio albums lack a little bit of sparkle from time to time) then check this one out.  Personally I think this is arguably the best thing they've ever done - not quite what I was expecting.  *horns*
