IMHO, this is one of the two fantastic songs on V, along with Evolution. And it reminds me so strongly of 70's Kansas ! Maddox, I know you love V and I think I remember that you told me that you don't like Kansas. So you shouldn't like Communion and the Oracle neither ... I know it's not that simple but try to make and old progfan (let's say my age   :() who doesn't know SX listen to CATO and ask him what band it reminds him of ...

Well, if that's true, then tell me which Kansas album I need, because I really like that song!

NP  Kamelot:  Dominion

This is the second Kamelot studio album. The last with Mark Vanderbilt on vocals. Getting Khan on the vocals and Casey Grillo on the drums raised Kamelot to the top league of prog metal, but already with Dominion, Kamelot were doing something special and memorable. For all Kamelot fans, a worthwhile acquisition.

The Butterfly Man

Just discovered another great band and just want to share it with you guys:

This time it's a Danish band: Lis Er Stille Check out their MySpace at http://www.myspace.com/liserstille and enjoy!

NP: Lis Er Stille - Forsyn

This is of course particulary interesting for me, as I live in (Pa)Copenhagen.

I actually hadnt heard them before. I have a faint recollection of having seen their name.

So I can help you with some translations: "Lis er stille" is "Lis is quiet". "Forsyn" is "providence".

They are based in Århus (remember the Å, Mad), which is the second biggest town in Denmark.

Lis Er Stille (Myspace)

Hmm, not bad. Sigur Ros comes to mind. But also Muse and Porcupine Tree.
Of course these samples aren't enough for me to say that I like it. It doesn't immediately grip me as much as Airbag did (which also had Porcupine Tree and Muse sounds (and Riverside)).

Still interesting though!

Now I'v played it four times in succession. Not groundbreaking as Halo and Ghost, but one of the best melodic heavy albums I'v heard. This stuff gets ya rockin  *horns*

Leftoverture. I am sure you can find it on the web for less than 8 euros and it's well worth every cent  ;)

Point of Know Return is another safe pick.

You just have to carefully avoid any album of the period that goes from  Drastic Measures to Freaks of Nature.

NP  Queen II

An album from the time when Queen were a goundbreaking prog group  *horns*

It's amazing to think that at this time Queen were so indigent that they couldnt afford a proper production; it's far below that of Houses Of The Holy and Dark Side, which were made at the same time. A few years later, Queen broke thru with Bohemian Rhapsody, and then became one of the world's most selling groups, with over 300 million albums worldwide.

From Samhot's review of Queen II on Amazon.com:

" 'Queen are one of those rare groups that sound like nobody but themselves...They made their own sound.'

Thank you so much Stanley Runk. That's something that seems to escape many Queen fans (and detractors): Queen's overwhelming originality. They hardly sounded like anyone during their time, and they incorporated elements and ideas into their music that other bands wouldn't, or possibly couldn't touch with a 10-foot pole. Hell, they were even like the only band I can think of who made progressive rock without a single use of a synthesizer during the 70s progressive rock movement. But, Queen were far more than just some "progressive rock" band, or a "hard rock" band or a "glam" band. They were above all of that cheap labeling.

Which brings us to this disc - an album that to this day still amazes me with it's sheer brilliance and inimitability. The musicianship is unique, inventive, clever, elegant, sophisticatedly sexy and compelling, and the amounts of complexity found within the album border on unfathomability. What's more astounding is how the album frequently contrasts dark & light, elegant & naughty, and brash & soft moments, added with the hyper-complexity in arrangements which still leave room for ethereal, angelic melodies and vocal harmonies, all in Queen's unique, Classicism-drenched style. Queen made all of this work so well, and all of this is what makes it the tantalizing and spellbinding wonder that it is, and after many years of listening to this album, I'm still discovering subtleties buried underneath its mysterious surface. Freddie Mercury's talents were far too exquisite, possibly even greater than his own understanding. He could do anything he wanted, and go anywhere he wanted with his superhuman vocal and songwriting abilities: he could be the Diva, the angel, the demon, the sorcerer, the seducer...you name it; and it shows on this disc."

I will. I can see that.

Drummagewise, I wish he wouldn't play the backwards double bass speed rhythm so much. It is hardly ever cool. To my ears, that is.

Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
5. Oxygene Part 5

Very relaxing music.
Those who've never heard this album should really check it out.
For me it took a while to appreciate it (it's mainly ambient music), but then I realised it is really good for the evenings, especially when doing some homework.
There's no singing on this, so I'm not tempted to sing along. Which is also a good thing when doing homework (or maybe a good thing in general...).

...and to hell with reeelaaaxaaaatiiiiooooo..... :D

Jarre has got a lot of fine music. I liked the Rendez vouz (I think it was called that) album, and I had Zoology once upon a time...

Right now, I'm on SAGA - HOUSE OF CARDS (my own cd-r version without the idiotic track and the sorry excuse for a title track...)

NP  The Mars Volta:  The Bedlam In Goliath

Their new studio album. As crazy and rockin as ever - maybe even more. Song names are Aberinkula, Ilyena, Metatron, Wax Simulacra, etc. - gives you an impression of whats goin on. These guys narrowly escaped death by drugs, and they sure got some new spin on life  *horns*

One of the most original groups around, tellya  ::)

The Amazon.com review: "No one has ever accused the Mars Volta of subtlety. But even so, the cyclonic caterwaul of Bedlam in Goliath is the band's fullest starburst to date. Sure, the songs have titles that seem indecipherable, from Aberinkula to Conjugal Burns. The important thing, though, is the molten, guitar-spiraling, drum-thundering core at the heart of the whole endeavor. Aberinkula opens the album with an unfettered explosion of clustered guitars and a dense keyboard haze pierced by Cedric Bixler-Zavala's coarse, pitched yowl. A scouring soprano sax solo cuts across the songs's midsection, and that vibe spreads throughout Bedlam, but so does the most pervasive melding of herky-jerk rhythms, post-punk speed, uber-funk bass, and chaotic riffage that you're likely to find in rock & roll. If it's Bedlam you want, you can't miss here." --Andrew Bartlett

I've 'tried' them once. Definitely not my cup of tea.
Take these guys and place a Devin Townsend next to them and i definitely would choose Townsend all the way.
This is the by far the weirdest prog/whatever minded band i've ever heard.

If you ask me they record their albums under the influence of many and i say many forbidden 'fruits' if you catch my drift.

A strong ' :-\' would do the trick.  :P

NP  Kamelot: Eternity

Well, gotit for completeness (their debut), and it'l prob remain in that cat  :D

The singing is, well, take Jamie with a hangover, and tug a bit extra at his b*s - somethin like that  ;D

Good that somebody told Mark to change his track (or shorts or whatever). He sounds a lot better on Dominion (nb 2) - in fact he sounds good there.

And then there's some weird sax that someone stole from the Mars Volta guys .... except that nobody here seems to know how to use it  ;D
