NP  Tool:  Ænima

A masterpiece  *horns*

Doesnt anybody around here listen to Tool ?  Tool are as prog and exciting as it gets. Guys, if you can enjoy (late) DT and Sieges Even, you can also enjoy Tool   8)

The discussion is continuously runnin whether Ænima, Lateralus, or 10,000 Days is their best, but the fact remains that all three are true lasting masterpieces.

So guys, if you want some prog that kicks a* (not just Paco's), then here it is  *horns*

Tool fans are some of the most learned people around. Read e.g. what Samhot writes about Ænima at Amazon.com:

Music de Psyche, December 4, 2002

By  Samhot (Star Land)

Tool is a band whose music is pretty hard to label. They've been called everything from metal, to numetal, to alternative and progressive rock/metal. While they exhibit attributes to all of the aforementioned genres, it's pretty safe to say that they've created a kind of music that's timeless, transcendent, deep, mysterious, forbidding and intriguing - all at once. To me, their name sums up the music they make perfectly - a "tool" for exploring the mysterious depths of the human psyche. The music usually explores darker themes like pain, anger, frustration and guilt, then regurgitates them into a volatile, yet beautiful and alluring catharsis.

How do I describe Tool's music?

I'd say they have the dark aura and minimalist experimentalism of King Crimson, the philosophical bent of Rush and the hypnotic, alluring quality of Pink Floyd - without really sounding like either of those bands. They possess their own distinctive sound.

On Ænima, Tool creates a 77-minute gargantuan slice of thought-provoking art-metal, which mainly encourages people to look deeper and think for themselves - whether it be looking beyond the surface of cliched beliefs (examples: what people are taught to believe in church, or what's seen and absorbed from television and more). When the mind is open to 'too' much outer influence, the mind is 'dead' - therefore, you lack your own thoughts and "you" no longer belong to "you".

Musically, the album is dark and given to adventurous, elaborate and spatial instrumentation - along with eerie and mysterious interludes...."

Yep, I like Tool.  As I mentioned in a reply on my listening profile thread (apparently I'm too dim to figure out how to link that post here  :-[ ), I have Undertow and Ænima.  Amazingly, Tool even gets some airplay on radio around here.

Yeah, Tool sell multiplatinum in the States, Manatee, which is surprising, because they're actually one of the most difficult bands to get into. I guess in the States now, there are quite a lot of people who demand intelligent music. You notice that on Amazon too.

Tool are relatively well known in Denmark too, because they played at the Roskilde Festival Summer 2006, and I heard that the concert was pretty overwhelming.

In this connection, I can also recom Deadsoul Tribe, with the great Buddy Lackey from Psychotic Waltz at the helm. BL now calls himself Devon Graves. Deadsoul Tribe's (cant call'm DT) style is close to Tool's, and they're just as terrific  *horns*

Also Adel Moustafa on drums has to be experienced !

I agree with you all on the Tool-matter.

Manatee, if you only have Undertow and Anima than you definitely should listen to Lateralus and 10.000 days. Both albums are astonishing and the latter has in my opinion the best artwork i've ever seen (3d case with 3d-glasses attached.) Really two classics.

NP  DT: Score

I find the first CD absolutely marvellous, the songs here are better or at least as good as their original studio versions, the new songs are great too, and The Spirit Carries On is one of the most wonderful moments in rock.

On the second CD, I really dont see the point of having added a symphonic orchestra. The overture to Six Degrees is even more boring and longdrawn than the studio version - on the studio, I skip it nowadays; on Score, you have to ff it, which takes time. The remaining pieces on CD 2 are topnotch, and I'll admit that the ending of Sacrificed Sons is powerful with the symphorchestra playing the theme and the four guys letting it all go, but in my analysis, Jordan does a masterly and sufficient job of supplying the symphonic stuff.

Guys, am I way out here ?

Also Yes' addition of a symphorchestra on the album Magnification didnt break ground. OK, it's a Yes album and great, but The Ladder two years earlier with just the five guys is much better.
