Nice work, Maddox - but my computer won't play it.  :(

If you have clicked the button 'listen now' then you probably had the same problem that i had.
On the right however a web-cam-thingy will show up where you can, obviously, see Dave live and hear the music.

Have fun.

BTw> pretty late for you, isn't it?
Not that i don't like it or anything. Normally i see you during the day when you're at work.  ;)

Now that I've cleared that up ....

We all have our different problems, Bush with Iraq, and Paco with "who knows who knows Arjen".

I like the Ayreon stuff, but it aint exactly groundbreaking like Dream Theater and Arena, and Arjen does seem to be a nice guy, and Grolsch is just as nice a beer ....

But I still don't get why you guys remain unawares of Sun Caged - probably all the cheese you stuff yourselves with, cheese dulls the mind - because for me, SC is the only mm-band that's in class with DT and Arena.

Ten is ok, but not heavy enough...

They can be pretty heavy too, but always melodic. You have to get their albums to experience that, e.g. The Essential Collection and The Twilight Chronicles, which I would class with Contagion, and actually quite similar.

Rome on TTC rocks just as heavy as Witch Hunt. - NP Rome *horns*

... but tastes change, you know ...

Betcha, Paco. Five years ago, Jon and Vangelis were about as heavy as I could take it; little did I know then that one day I'd have Opeth banging around in my earphones.

But cheese - what's the use? - it aint neither heavy, nor melodic, nor blue, nor anything else useful.

I never said that i was unaware of Sun Caged.  ;)
I have both albums and i think their really good. One of the best Dutch prog metal acts. I do like the previous singer better than on the first album though.

But you're right, i hardly ever play them.  :-\

The problem was that it requires some Java plug-in which I don't have on my computer... this bloody thing needs fixing again!?!  >:(

I just discovered last.fm.
Nice site, just listened to Geddy Lee's Home On A Strange and it sounded very nice!

I also liked Rush's latest album (need to buy it too (that's not the album title...)), but can someone give me suggestions about other of Rush's albums?
The early Rush albums are not really that great (I think) because of Lee's singing there, on the latest (and his solo album) however I like his singing a lot!

Now listening to something really dumb and not nice: Henry Cow - Teenbeat... (awful! :-X )
-Paco

PH

Now listening to Blackfield - Miss U

last.fm is fun. It gives recommendations based upon when you like a song or not.

Good to see you getting into the old bands Paco! Some posts back in this thread I was discussing Rush with Nicky, here goes an overview of their albums:

Rush / Fly By Night / Caress Of Steel: basically garage rock, although Caress Of Steel is more experimental. I don't have these, my collection starts with 2112;

2112 / A Farewell To Kings / Hemispheres: their concept trilogy and their most symphonic period (long epics divided in parts etc). The vocals are still an acquired taste and therefore these albums may not be the best starting point. 2112 is their absolute prog classic though and is one of Mick's all time favourite albums btw.

Permanent Waves / Moving Pictures: classic albums and both highly recommended!! More accessible than the three preceding albums and in a way transitional albums towards the next four albums:

Signals / Grace Under Pressure: at the start of the 80s and influenced by the new wave Rush started to use more synths and to write more concise or even poppier songs. Fans of early Rush didn't like this development, but I just love these two albums and I think Rush made a good progression here. There's so much happening within this shorter song format. And Grace Under Pressure really is the 80s Cold War gloom epitomized.

Power Windows / Hold Your Fire: Rush' most polished poppy period. Power Windows is great though (Mystic Rhythms!). Hold Your Fire doesn't really capture me, the songs are a bit too anonymous, I can never really distinguish them after the first two Force Ten and Time Stand Still.

Presto / Roll The Bones: basically modern (pop) rock. Fine albums and definitely worth getting, but probably not a logical place to start.

Counterparts / Test For Echo / Vapor Trails / Snakes & Arrows: with Counterparts Rush moves back to a more heavy guitar driven sound (some even say grunge influenced), this is continued on Test For Echo and Vapour Trails takes it even a step further and reminds of their very first works. It is much derided for muddy production, but I think it absolutely rocks, just listen to the opening track One Little Victory, such energy!

Paco, a good introduction to Rush (it was my starting point) is their triple live album Different Stages. Two great sounding discs from the Test For Echo tour with a great selection of tracks from their entire career, plus a third disc of their 1978 tour.

Thanks, Erik. That's also very useful to me.

Rush will be my next big musical project, after Ten.

NP  Ten: The Elysian Fields (on Twilight)

Now I've played this song ten times in a row, so I'm beginning to experience that it's me doing both the singing and playing the guitar solos, so before I also take over the drums, maybe I should put on something else  ;D

But man, is this good  :) :) :)

Wow Erik!
Thanks for that!
I think I'll start with Permanent Waves (my father mentioned this one too, and said that I should listen to it) and Moving Pictures (I've heard this is absolutely their best).

I've heard only two albums by them: Fly By Night (which I didn't like...) and Snakes & Arrows (which I LOVE!) the big difference is in the singing I think.
But I'm not narrow minded and I will try out a couple of them.

I'm very excited about it actually.
So next on my to-do list is "listening to Pink Floyd (Atom Heart Mother 'till The Final Cut)" and "Listening to Rush (Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and perhaps Vapor Trails".

Thanks thanks thanks!

At the moment I'm listening to Frank Klepacki:
C&C: Red Alert 2
Track: "Eagle Hunter"

As heard on his website

A very tension building song.
Very ambient too, in fact.
Actually, overall a very clever chap, Frank Klepacki.

Nicky, Paco, you're welcome, good to see you two latching on to Rush! *horns* I'm passionate about this band as you already will have gathered from my previous posts ;) Looking forward to your listening experiences.

Thanks, Erik. I am looking forward to delving into the world of Rush.

But I can see that I'll still be spending a lot of time with Ten. I couldn't believe that they could repeat something like The Essential Collection, but The Twilight Chonicles are/is at least as unbelievable. Beats me. Songs like Rome and Elysian Fields, in fact all the songs, just keep getting better, even after ten listens. - Maybe I should propose to them to change their name to Hundred  ;D

And I've now realised that the theme of Twilight is the collapse of all great civilisations - take names like Rome, Elysian Fields etc. - should make the flashlights of any true proggie blink ....

The Room is a place where we should catch such Genius and promote it.

So guys: I'm waiting.

Yesterday my dad and me were searching through last.fm for Irish folk music (my dad's passion).
We stumbled upon some very nice Irish Folk bands.

Solas and Kíla for example.

I'm now listening to some samples of Kíla on their website (from the album 'Luna Park').
It's very nice music, with many influences.
With an open mind you will like it!

I'm not afraid anymore to post this:

I'm now listening to Solas (on their official website) and wow, I like it!
Very catchy Irish folk with a pop approach with beautiful guitars.
This is actually Progressive Folk (not to be mistaken with Progfolk or Folkrock).

Now playing track:
Coconut Dog / Morning Dew

From their latest album (2006) "Reunion: A Decade Of Solas".

Honestly, at least check it out before posting again in this topic!

No, but it is very common in Progressive Forums that people think very high of their precious Prog music (and they should!), but are laughing when someone posts about something regressive as Irish Folk music.

Personally, I've got nothing against anything as long as you show a passion for the music.
It's the mainstream crap that I like to spit upon (mainly for fun, 'cuz there are really good and clever popsongs out there as well!).
And things like Frans Bauer or something...

Tss, tss - have these people ever heard of something called 'broad-mindedness'? Prog is great, but there's so much more good music than that!
(Go on, proggies, start throwing rotten vegetables at me!)  ;D
