I don't know what Paco is up to here. Opeth and Riverside have about as much in common as Marilyn Manson and James LaBrie (not making any value judgements).
By the way, has anybody got (or listened to) the new Marilyn Manson album?

Nope, but I do like his stuff sporadically (This Is The New Shit!).

Thanks, Nicky and Paco for the tips and pointers, eventhough it aggravates the shopping list thing!! :P

Let's have a characterisation. I've heard it's far more mature then his earlier stuff.

Who's willing to stick his/her neck out?

Nicky.
So you've come of age
And so you want to meet God
Sure you can
He's right here next to me

NP  Riverside: Second Life Syndrome (surprised?)

OK, I'll admit it's closer to Porcupine Tree than I remembered - and Opeth - more PT than Floyd, however more dynamic than the older PT stuff.

Where's the "growl"?

Worth having, for sure.

I suppose this is better than the 'Fatal Attraction Syndrome' you've mentioned before, Nicky?  ;)

Only because you're not in it, Bluey  ;D

Man! Nicky, did you do your homework?
Opeth and Riverside have more in common than Riverside and Pink Floyd!

I'd say: try before you buy and make your own view on it.

Oh and I'm playing some nostalgia here.

No, that's not a band.
Well, maybe it is... but...

I found a Dutch website where I can view some episodes of old tv series.
Now playing:
De avonturen van Teddy Ruxpin
1. De schat van Grundo

Wonderful!! :'(

I disagree.  ;)

Usually i don't categorize bands but Riverside is a perfect mixture of Opeth + Pink Floyd + Porcupine Tree = Riverside.  ;D
There is even a sample of Shine On of PF on one song of the latest album of Riverside.  ;)

Back then, they did so much more effort on an animated cartoon. Television was much more enjoyable than it is now.
Nowadays everything is far too "busy". Animated cartoons on tv were funny, educative, entertaining, exciting, full of adventure and often enriched with nice music and recognisable begin and end tunes. But today they're not funny, the opposite of educative, boring and often provocative.
Children are fed with bad television...

Yes, Maddox, a main character because of her absence.

This dude is one of the most provocative species I've ever encountered.
Are we talking about that shock rock figure?

He is sick and I'm not going to listen to anything that he has released unless he came to himself and thinks about what he's done, burned his own cds and made a gospel album.

Yep... I like some of his old songs too (I'm a bit into this industrial sound they've got), but mainly for the music, not for the lyrics. (There we are again, Paco!  :) )

Well, obviously I haven't heard it (yet), that's why I was asking for someone's expertise... but this is probably the wrong forum for this.  ;)

Yes, Paco, I am serious, but let me tell you that I don't like his image at all. As far as that is concerned I think you're right, it is sick indeed! However, it seems that the breakup with his old girlfriend and falling in love with a new girl did do him good (to some extent).  ;D

Still, apart from the image and the (sometimes really annoying) lyrics, the music is pretty good.
(Same as Ramstein, for example - listening to their singer drives me crazy, but the music rocks!  *horns* )

Rammstein and mr Manson are both pretty sick and it's really camp stuff, but I do find it enjoyable, it depends on the moment/mood (as with all music).

Well, different mood yesterday evening, played Nolan & Wakeman / Jabberwocky. Tremendous album that I hadn't played for too long. Will put on The Hound Of The Baskervilles soon again as well.

Thanks Erik, that did give some impressions. Now, what I'd like is for a roomie to relate this album to the music that we know and give us an indication of whether it belongs in a prog collection.

NP  Riverside: Second Life Syndrome

On repeat  *horns*

These Poles have really risen to world prog stardom. The immediate associations are PT and Floyd, but they sure wanna do their own thing, nobody's fool.

Convinced, Erik?

The review of New York Times - who btw have some of the best reviewers in the world of albums, films and books:

MARILYN MANSON

"Eat Me, Drink Me"

(Interscope)

Once Marilyn Manson was the Antichrist superstar, the scourge of the moralistic, a proud magnet for controversy. Now, years later, he's a lovesick ghoul. "I kill myself in small amounts/in each relationship it's not/about love/Just another funeral," he sings in "They Said That Hell's Not Hot." It's one of the many songs on "Eat Me, Drink Me" that start out as rock dirges and build melodramatically from there. The songs were written, produced and performed with Tim Skold, the only other musician on the album. Despite some spooky background noises, the music leans toward a glam-gone-grim style, reverting to a sound that predates Marilyn Manson's past industrial-rock stomps.

Just because he's singing about love doesn't mean Marilyn Manson has turned into a nice guy. The closer he wants to get, the creepier he becomes. As a goth in good standing, he can't envision love without thinking about death. When a girl blows him a kiss in "Just a Car Crash Away," he "can already feel her worms eating my spine." He takes a particular delight in mutilation, for himself and others: "She'll never cover up what we did in a dress," he gloats in "Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides That Hand)," the album's snappiest song.

He must miss his days as a scourge. "The legends get older/But I stay the same/as long as you have less to say," he sneers. But actually, no one is angling for his old job, since it has been utterly diffused. Amid extreme Internet porn, hi-res videogame violence and real-world war, Marilyn Manson has become just another public deviant. JON PARELES

I see your point, but still Manson is far more sick than Ramstein.
Manson is a Goth, he's in love with death. He's crazy about everything gore.
That's so much different than the Society-critic Ramstein. Ramstein are on the edge of insanity sometimes, but they're purpose is to bring problems in society to the surface.
Benzin, for example is a crazy song (very cool tho) about pyromania.
But of course, some of their songs are pretty scary... Mein Teil (about a guy who wants to be eaten up by a cannibal, because this causes him erotic pleasure. Based on a true story.)
This brings the question: how far can we go?
