3. Me And Sarah Jane

Wonderful track!
I love Genesis.
Actually I like both eras I think.
The only two albums that are weaker than the rest are "Genesis" and "Invisible Touch".
But "Invisible Touch" has 'Tonight, Tonight, Tonight', 'Domino' and 'The Brazilian', which are very good.
"Genesis" has just 'Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea'. And the awful 'Illegal Alien' makes it the worst album anyway...
So "Genesis" is the worst of Genesis.
"We Can't Dance" did go the right way again with songs like 'Driving The Last Spike' and 'Fading Lights'.

Sometimes I hope Genesis will make a new album again, be it with either Gabriel, Collins or Wilson.

PH

Genesis - We Can't Dance *horns*

12. Fading Lights

Starting slowly... and ending slowly. But what's that in the middle?? Right! That's prog!
Phil Collins' voice is so different on this album when you compare it to its predecessor.
It's sharper... piercing actually... It's a different Phil... and it's only gone downhill since then...

BUT STILL I want a new Genesis album...

As if THAT's gonna happen, but we all have hopes eh?

Eh?

NP  Korn:  Unti.

Had it on rep during the train ride back from Stockholm.

Just got back to Vangede. Pusle the cat was fine and happy to see me again, and I to see her.

Korn are quite different from Genesis. Sure aint for everyone, but for a weird mind like mine, their music is ambrosia.

Hmm, like it.  8)

NP  Spiral Architect:  A Sceptic's Universe.

A true masterpiece, in the style of Zero Hour and Thought Chamber, so if you like these, you'll prob like ASU. It's from 2000, and has gradually become a cult album among heavy proggies, an album that you can listen to hundreds of times and each time experience something new and exciting.

SA are a Norwegian group, topnotch musicians. The bassist Lars K Norberg is all over the place, you don't forget him that fast. Also the singer Øyvind Hægeland has a wide range of expression.

Big thanks to Ken Golden from Laser's Edge for supporting such adventurous and uncommercial efforts.

I'm listening to Peter Pan - Days

If you like "Satellite" then you should also like "Peter Pan", since the music is written by the same guy.  ;)

NP  Pallas:  Ghostdancers (from The Dreams).

World prog with a local (Scot) flavor. Simply beyond all measures, so beautiful!

I'm just wondering, just like with A, how come these guys are only invited to play in small venues, and how can even these be cancelled? This kinda music should be blasted out of loudspeakers all over the world; then all the Talibans, al-Qaidas and Cheneys would listen to wonderful music instead of blasting the s* out of each other.

Quite simple... (didn't we have this discussion before?) I fear the Talibans, al-Qaidas and Cheneys are just not intelligent enough to appreciate good music... let's face it, people who kill other people "just because" can't be too bright... sad, isn't it?

NP  Opeth:  Ghost Reveries.

Once you get over your growlophobia, this album becomes a real grower (less of a growler). It's probably my fave album by a Scandinavian group. Opeth are really unique in that they cover so much territory convincingly, from very heavy to delicate, melodious to harsh.

The lyrics are quite a challenge. In any case, I'm convinced that they're not anti-Christian, they don't bother my Christian sensibilities, and Mikael is certainly intellectually up to it. It seems to me that they're about not giving in to nihilism and relativism despite all the ugliness in the world and the pitfalls of love.

This album is a real treat.

Hi Nicky,

have you ever heard of Anathema? If yes, what do you think of them?

I actually have A Natural Disaster and Altenative 4, which I've listened to a bit, but I guess I'll have to give them some more spins now (women run my life). After:

NP  Steve Vai:  Fire Garden.

Talking about Arena and Pallas not gaining enough attention, here's another great artist who's also living in the shadows. Stevie boy is mainly known for the G3 stuff, which I find very unfortunate, because beside being a fabulous guitarist, he's a great, very imaginative composer, and a quite good, rather special, but very expressive, singer. So, roomies, here's the tip of the week. There are lots of different moods on FG, and all of it is thoroughly matured and excellently produced.

Steve Vai is a genius, not only on the guitar!  :)

So don't you know the "old" Anathema stuff, from the time when they still growled? I've got "Tales from the Thousand Lakes", a really great album!

But this one is by Amorphis, Bluey. So what do you mean?

Oooops!!!  :-[ Got that mixed up, don't ask me how it happened! My brain isn't what it used to be...  ;)

Of course I mean 'Crestfallen' by Anathema and 'Tales from the Thousand Lakes' by Amorphis! (Must be because both bands start with an 'A' and both used to growl in their early days and now changed their style quite a bit. Love them both though!)

Have you got or heard any of these albums?

bluepony

Now I know how I could mix up Amorphis and Anathema - I was introduced to both bands at the same time, by a mix-tape that the husband of a friend of mine had made for me, so back then I didn't have any of their albums, but both bands on the same tape...

Still, an almost unforgivable mistake!!  :-[ :-[

Hehehehe

Are you claiming that there's some Finnish music here that's worth listening to? OK, I'll give Amorphis a try.

There is a lot of Finnish music worth listening to, Amorphis being just the tip of the iceberg. When I wrote for this online music mag I got many interesting demos from 'up there', but unfortunately most of those bands were never heard of again... except for one (H.I.M.), which may not be the best example for good Finnish music... but certainly for bands that sell albums because theye have a cute (not to my standards, though!) singer. ;)

bellanova

I dont know Anathema but they are supporting Porcupine Tree in November so i will see them then. Do you recommend them Bluey?

bluepony

Absolutely! I saw them playing live (once supporting Tiamat, as well as 'on their own') and I believe they got better with each album they released (although my personal favourite still is 'Judgement', closely followed by 'Eternity' and 'Alternative 4').
