John, could you give us a characterisation? That always makes the NP's more interesting. I've heard a lot about Al Stewart, but never really got to know his music properly.

Nicky.

No! Bugger off.

Oh....all right then.

Al Stewart - Love Chronicles

1.     In Brooklyn (Al Stewart)

2.     Old Compton Street Blues (Al Stewart)

3.     The Ballad of Mary Foster (Al Stewart)

4.     Life and Life Only (Al Stewart)

5.     You Should Have Listened To Al (Al Stewart)

6.     Love Chronicles (Al Stewart)

Original Vinyl release 1969

PERSONNEL:
Producer: Roy Guest

Musicians:
Al Stewart: vocal, guitar
"Mervyn Prestwick" (Richard Thompson):guitar
Jimmy Page: guitar
"Simon Breckenridge" (Simon Nicol):guitar
Ashley Hutchings: bass
Brian Odgers: bass
Brian Brocklehurst: bass
"Martyn Francis" (Martin Lamble): drums
Harvey Burns" drums
Phil Phillips: organ
Stephen Gray: organ

Additional notes: The 1969 UK release was voted "Folk Album of the Year" by the UK music weekly "Melody Maker".
Richard Thompson, Simon Nicol, Ashley Hutchings and Martin Lamble were all members of Fairport Convention at the time of the recording. They appeared under pseudonyms because of their record contract.
The entire album "Love Chronicles" was included as disk 2 in the 2 disk versions of "The Early Years".

What I was listening was the june 2007 CD release which has 3 extra tracks on the end.

I first heard this album in about 1982 and liked it straight away, I had taped the original vinyl that belonged to a mate  and after a few years of playing, the tape went the way of most tapes and got eaten by a hungry player! Forgot about it (mostly) untill I saw this release and i'm very glad I got it.

EDIT* I should add that the title track, Love Chronicles is an 'epic' at 18:04. So just under 20 minutes of rather nice laid back folkey, proggyish type stuff.

The Butterfly Man

I'm now listening to the song 'All That Remains' from the latest album of the band '3'. They are an American band who recently were the support-act of Porcupine Tree on the American leg of their tour. It's not prog in the traditional sence of the word, but I really like them!

You can check some of their music out on http://www.myspace.com/3

I would suggest that your next should be 'Believe'. A fantastic album and probably the album that would stand out as being the most different from the others. But whichever you went for i'm sure you wouldn't be dissapointed.

Maddox, you're a man of mystery, and I'm a man of have-to-know.

Couldn't find this one either. Tried on Ytsejam and Amazon.

Now I'm gonna turn the tables and become the man of mystery: Hoo, woo, anyone know what "Ytsejam" means?

Question one: "Hoo, woo, anyone know what "Ytsejam" means?"

Answer one: Before Dream Theater was ehm...Dream Theater they called themselves Majesty. If you read that backwards you get: Ytsejam.  ;)
On When Dream & Day Unite there's also an instrumental song, which is the basis of all instrumental medley/songs of DT, was actually called Ytsejam.
And all songs of DT are published by Ytsejam records.  :D

Question two: *about Romavarium* Couldn't find this one either.  :-\

Answer Two: Romavarium is the fan club DVD which came with the new spring edition. It's recorded in Rome, Italy and contains the Entire Octavarium album, but then live.
It also has a few extra features, like a photo shoot.  ;)

And boy, it is great, isn't it? Definately something every DT-fan should have! Nicky, no offence, I'm just teasing you a little bit here...;)

By the way, have you already listened to some '3' Maddox?

Tom, this is great music! Really! I've had All That Remains on repeat mode for quite a while now. The other songs on Myspace are great too. I'll have to get The End Is Begun soon (their latest album from 2007). 3 have already become one of my fave groups.

Great melody, singing, harmonies, rhythms, lyrics, spacey stuff, they got it all, man.

I checked'm up on Wikipedia:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_%28band%29  They've been around since early 90's, which I simply don't get at all. How come we haven't heard about them earlier?

They were founded as a brother group, which is usually an indicator of quality, with Joey Eppard on guitar and lead vocals, Josh Eppard on drums, and Chris Bittner on bass, three-piece, thus the name 3. (PH, don't you have a bro who sings?). Josh and Chris have left since, and now 3 are 5. (No, this time it's not the vodka.)

All That Remains is a nice double-edged title.

Their official site, which is also nice:  http://www.theband3.com/

Only one grudge: Why is it that marsh monsters write "definately", when the rest of us write "definitely"? (Can't help it.)  ;D

Tip: Think of Latin finire to end.

Merci bien, Bupie. Tres bien!

Exile in my case is about being born to two expatriated parents in England, then living in Denmark, where I never really felt at home, and now surrendering to a Swedish blond and moving to Malmö. My bro had the same origins, but ended up in frogland, so I guess I'm better off  ;D

You know that "frog" is English slang for Frenchie, Bupie?

"Frog" as an abbreviation of French prog! Great, Bupie.

> I hope you were not the black sheep of your family, Nicky?

I guess I was, am, and will always be. Guess I'm too freaked out for their taste. They're pretty conservative. But I love them all the same, and they seem to love me. And we always have some fun, when we're together; I guess I act the fool, and that makes them laugh.

But more seriously, it's strange what happens to most people when they get past teenage years. Somehow they get a fright for life, and that makes them scramble for cover, and they get very protective and defensive. So they stick to norms and "behave themselves", the men get their corporate haircuts and spend their spare time watching sports on TV, the women share the lives of their kids.

I was 21 years at a traditional job. I felt I was changing a lot during that time, trying out all sorts of freaked out things, while the only thing that seemed to be happening to my colleagues was that they were getting greyhaired and their kids were getting bigger - grammar school, high school, university. I was frustrated as hell, but even so, it took me years to give up the security of a good job. Guess we're all comfort addicts - more or less.

Today I'm happy that I gave up that job. My life's a total mess, but I'm having a lot more fun.

That was a long story you got me into, Bupie, and Cap's gonna rave and rant (fortunately I'm far from Karlsunruhe  ;D ), but I guess I had to get it out.

Long live prog - and freaks like us!

Well, funny that they are touring the US and Canada right now with Porcupine Tree cos some parts actually reminds me of PT. Favourite one right now is All That Remains, which means the new stuff. The other 3 songs are pretty good also. I think the singer is a mixture between Steve Wilson and the vocalist of A.C.T. (that should wake someone's attention  ;)).

Would like to hear more stuff of them.  :D
