I recently made a classics CD filled with tracks that i think are the best songs there are.

On it are tracks like:

Ultravox - Vienna
Dire Straits - Private Investigations
Gary Rafferty - Baker Street
Mark & Clark Band - Grand Old Piano
Supertramp - Fool's Overture
Queen - Innuendo
Simple Minds - Belfast Child
Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven
Guns 'n Roses - November Rain

And lots and lots of others.

I'm right now playing Joe Jackson's Real Men.
Marvellous track.  8)

Wow, somebody else here that knows and likes Joe Jackson ! He used to be my rock hero when I was a teenager. And I saw him live on the Night and Day tour. I think I was 17 and I believe it was my first concert ... and one of the best. Thanks to remind me of that, Mad !

I was a big Joe Jackson fan too.  In fact, I think I saw him on that same tour.  It was a great but strange concert -- I'm not sure if he it did it that way on the whole tour or just this one show: it was at a fairly small outdoor venue on a pier in New York.  His band included a bass but no regular guitar, and they did Is She Really Going Out With Him a capella.
"What is that sound?  It's confusing, and boy is it loud!"

Well to be honest i wouldn't call myself a fan of him but there are two songs i really like and Manatee just mentioned the other one.  :D

True, no guitar on this tour. And one a capella version of Is She really going out with Him. I recommend you (and everybody else) the excellent triple CD Live 1980/86, including three versions of ISRGOWH : one electric, one acoustic and one a capella. In fact, I am going to order it myself since I only have it on vinyl.

Yes, I do, Bups. Bought it ½ year ago. Like it a lot, but not as much as the post-Scenes albums. Guess I'm a heeeeaaaavy guy  ;D

Apropos, we had some yoga at my course this morning. It might help me shed a coupl'o kilos  :D

Played this morning:  Back to Kamelot mode. This guys really do it for me. They have some real interesting themes too, stuff like contacts with the other side, mediumism, karma, death - man, real profound guys !

You guys should look more at lyrics. Bands like Arena, DT, Kamelot, Tool, and Ten have some real mind-boggling stuff there !  ;)

You're right. I see it more as a live album, so I'll try to get the studio albums first, and then I'll buy A Change Of Seasons. The song is said to be brilliant.

You think so? ::) What's so profound about it? There's nothing really clever about talking about contacts with the other side, mediumism, karma or death. It depends on what you have to say about it. And often I have to admit that I don't approve of the views of many of the artists.

Sometimes it's really mind-boggling because I can't figure out what their intentions are. I'm sorry to say this again but: DT contains at least three (self-proclaimed) christians, but their lyrics are very vague and can be explained in many ways, just how you want it to be...
You are christian and you like DT? Then DT has some nice christian lyrics.
You are atheist and you like DT? Then DT has some nice atheistic lyrics.
You are buddhist and you like DT? Then DT has some nice buddhist lyrics.
Their intentions are not clear.
I must say that I find that very difficult... :(

OK, my little sophist, you're talkin on a very speculative basis. The groups I mentioned embrace some of the most intelligent and learned musicians in the world. Tellya, they sure aint gonna waste our time with banal or useless lyrics.

If you fall over some perplexing lyrics by any of these groups, I'm willing to discuss it with you, but I dont see any sense in discussing this matter on a speculative basis  :)

I'm on the lookout for any lyrics that intrigue me and stimulate my imagination, barring anti-Christian and nihilistic texts.

As I'm interested in other religions too, I have no problems with lyrics inspired by e.g. the Vedas or Mosaic traditions.

I'm not gonna argue with you about whether they're intelligent and learned musicians, because I can only agree! I even agree about the lyrics. They ARE clever, they surely are NOT banal or useless. But what I was trying to say is that no matter how clever you write your lyrics, when you write them about contacts with the other side, mediumism, karma or death, you can either go right or wrong. Don't you agree, Nicky?
Thinking about the same subject doesn't mean thinking the right way...

That reminds me about the lyrics of In The Presence Of Enemies. Have you already made an opinion about what this song is about? And what to say about the influence they took it from?

Quote from: Nicky007 on Mon, 2008-03-10, 19:35:32I'm on the lookout for any lyrics that intrigue me and stimulate my imagination, barring anti-Christian and nihilistic texts.
The problem is that it's sometimes very hidden.

I'm also very interested in other religions. Just like you, I even don't have problems with lyrics inspired by the Vedas or Mosaic (or any other) tradition per se. Sometimes two religions come very close to each other on some levels. (Be nice to each other (humanism, Vedas) But often it's against what I believe... (reincarnation (Scenes From A Memory?)) And for me that's where it stops. After I found out about RPWL's influences (Vedas) I didn't listen to World Through My Eyes anymore... Strange enough, I don't feel the desire to...
To be honest, I have the same with Dream Theater's latest...

But there's still plenty of good music left!
Threshold, Neal Morse, Arena, Spock's Beard...

In fact, I'm listening to Threshold right now (back on topic):
Subsurface

Thinking about the same subject doesn't mean thinking the right way...

I'm not gonno discuss with you whether Shakespeare, Goethe, and Milton think the "right way", because that's what we're talkin bout here, Paco:  Kamelot's, SyX's, and the other great band's lyrics are inspired by and based on the classic works by these great thinkers.

I think rather that we should use this inspiration from Kamelot & Co. to seek up the Faust dramas, Milton's Paradise Lost, etc.

All the stuck-up conservatives are accusing us of being pubertarians .... but we're changing that, aint we, Paxi ?

Quote from: PH on Mon, 2008-03-10, 21:18:33
But often it's against what I believe .... reincarnation (Scenes From A Memory)

The idea of reincarnation is deeply lodged in the Greek-Roman-Christian culture. You find it discussed explicitly by i.a. Pythagoras, Platon, Kant, Goethe, Wagner, and even our dear Danish Grundtvig.
