NP  Therion:  Gothic Kabbalah

Had heard a lot of good about this album on several occasions, and as I ran into it today in a big CD-store in Malmö (and had a bit of "spare" cash on hand), I purchased it.

And I'm sure happy that I did. Therion is a Swedish group classified as symphonic and operatic metal. With the Italian groups of this style, I always go dead after a few tracks, but I experience that Therion have a lot more to offer.

Now I'm listening to the double-CD for the second time, and it still grips me.

I think I'll just give you guys parts of S. Craig Caldwell's excellent review from Amazon.com (my underlining):

"This CD is very simply one of the best (if not the best) CDs I've purchased. Ever.

The musicianship is stellar, the vocals are amazing, the production is excellent, and the songwriting is near-perfect. If you like Progressive Metal (or even just rock/metal in general), you should own this CD.

I own over 1000 CDs (own, not pirated), largely progmetal, and if this one holds up to long-term listening (and I think it will), it will be in my "Top 10 ever" list. I'd compare it to Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime", if that tells you anything.

Buy. Enjoy. Then get their first disc, "The 1st Chapter". It was one of my favorite CDs in its year of release (2004 or 2005), so clearly it's also excellent, though the band has definitely kicked things up a notch in overall quality with "Isolate."

I've seen the band live (twice, in fact), and their live performance is worthy of the CD, with alll of the musicians nailing all of their parts, including the vocals (phenomenal harmonies, even live). All of the band members do background, but it's Michael Eriksen's lead vocals that definitely stand apart (though the drummer, Truls, has an awesome voice as well). Mike has already established himself as one of metal's top new vocalists, and it's well-deserved."

I checked the reviews on PA and they are very mixted but someone compared them to Def Leppard (therefore giving the album 1 star out of 5 !) so I should enjoy it a lot  8)

NP N... Hmm, no, since it's been a week that I play the same band, I will keep it for myself  ;D

You'll have to get into your heavy mode though, Bupie, but you have that side too, since you like SDOIT.

A person who gives this album 1 star and compares it with Def Leppard knows absolutely nothing about current prog  ::)

I consider Isolate the best album since Systematic Chaos and SyX's Paradise Lost.

Tom, I'm sure you'll like it, because the style is quite close to Redemption.

The vocals and harmonies are absolutely fantastic and remind me of Kansas, so there's an extra + for you Bupie  :)

I wont tell the other roomies that it's Nightwish, Bupsie  ;D

If I ever start a band with Paco Jr. & Sr., we'll definitely get a female singer to make you our fan !  Frenchies are actually quite easy to satisfy that way :D

ELP - Brain Salad Surgery.

Not played this for yonks! Thanks Mick......

Mick posted about the books of Justin Peter Beaney so I had a look at his website and read about his inspiration for his book, Kâsdejâ's Children, Karn Evil 9 was an inspiration for the book and made me realize I'd not played it for quite a while. Now putting that right.
This insomnia shit is a great excuse for listening to more music but boy, am I gonna suffer for it tomorrow!

Nicky007

Yeah, John, I should actually give ELP a run again. Havent played them for about 30 years. At the time I found them a bit much on the technical side, but my taste has changed a lot, and today I'm prob more accesible to that type of music.

Is BSS your recom?

I'm sad bout your imsomnia problem. Doesnt the beer do the trick?

I know, I already have the album a couple of months now actually. It's one of my favourite cd's of the year, maybe even slightly better than Systematic Chaos, and that says a lot! *horns*

Therefore, I'm now playing: Circus Maximus - Zero

Primordial - To The Nameless Dead

Yeah, I actually just read an article about them in a Dutch rock/metal-magazine. How are they like? Cause I don't get a clear impression from reading that article. I know I could just go to their MySpace or something but I want to know someone's opinion on them before I give them a try. Plus I still got loads of Porcupine Tree music to listen to today, so I'm quite busy!
