You know, I think Pete can sing very well when he tries. The Pink Floyd song on the bonus disc was very cool too, but here it was that I really thought "Pete, Pete, Pete, just let Neal do it." But overall on the CD and on the live DVD I think Pete can sing very in tone and he has a nice voice.

Oh, and I think Transatlantic (especially Bridge Across Forever) is just as good as Spock's Snow and Dream Theater's Scenes. ;)

PH, I would propose that, in your coming band, you stick to the keyboards and let someone else sing  ;D

That's when I also got fidgeting.

Looks like I'm a bit heavier than you, PH. I prefer Spock's self-titled album to Snow, and Six Degrees to Scenes. But I'll get you a beer anyway next time  ;D

I haven't listened a lot to Transatlantic, but when I did, I felt that their music was far from the heights of Dream Theater and Spock's.

Nicky.

??? I mean  ??? ??? ???

Nicky, you just  make me :'(

Seriously, the four 20+ minutes epics on both of their albums are amongst the best I have ever heard. Much better than DT's Octavarium, for instance. And Mike is a little more groovy and subtle than in DT. Plus, Neal's voice is not a problem for you if you like SB. So you should enjoy Transatlantic !

Anyway, as we say in French : "les goûts et les couleurs" ...

Looks like I just got majorised there. OK, I'll give TA some spins (and send some bad bad thoughts to you buggers)  ;D

> Plus, Neal's voice is not a problem for you if you like SB.

Neal's singing is no problem for me, Bupie; on the contrary, he's one of my abs fave singers. It's Pete who sounds like he swallowed the whole bottle.

> Much better than DT's Octavarium, for instance.

That one you'll never get me to buy. I'm a huge Octavarium fan.

Yeah, the guts ate the colors  ;D

NP  DT: Systematic Chaos.

Forsaken (track 2).

My oh my oh my, am I in heaven?

Hey, Bupie, listen to the amazing stuff that Mike does here. He's clearly on home base with DT.

Anything by Transatlantic over Dream Theater's latest! Seriously!
And I like Systematic Chaos! No doubt!

Anyway, we're going soooo much off topic.

I was playing Gazpacho - Night
And after that I played a bit of Magic Pie - Circus Of Life, but then my mom came in the living room, so I moved upstairs to my pc.

PH

Oh and now I'm playing Seven Reizh. That's a band from France if I remember correct.
They also collaborate with a guy from Marocco, I think.

05. Qim Iydi...

A very beautiful piece, sung by the Maroccan man. ;D Never thought I'd listen to something sung in Maroccan. But it's beautiful!

Play Euphoria Morning for her, PH. Women really dig Chris' singing (and looks).

I like Moroccan music too. I have several hours of it on various CD's. In that connection, I can recom  No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, great album.

Well, better get on with some other stuff now.

I didn't say that I like Moroccan music, but Seven Reizh is good (it's not Maroccan music, it's French but on some tracks a Moroccan singer sings (not in a Moroccan way, but in a "western" way) with Maroccan lyrics).

Now I'm listening to German proggers "Neuschwanstein". Man oh man, this is so beautiful! Perfect 70's prog (1978). The album is called "Battlement".
I hope someday this band will reform and do another album.

Sounds pretty convoluted, PH. Sure you got it right?  ;D

I have the folder "Fez. Festival of world sacred music", two CD's and a folder with a lot of interesting written material. Lots of great music from several African countries, Pakistan, and even Bolivia. Highly recom.

Initially more interesting than enjoyable. Can follow you in this, Bupie.

I DO love Mike playing with DT, and maybe even more when he overplays, being all over the place.

So, to get back to the topic with a synthesistic song of the aforementioned remarks :

DT : Never Enough

NP  DT: Systematic Chaos

The Ministry Of Lost Souls  (track 7).

The most religious track (7).

There's not much focus on lyrics here in the Room, so I'd like to draw your attention to the lyrics of the DT guys, particularly John Petrucci. Murat Batmaz, who's a member of the Room, has noted in an Amazon review that JP is one of the most gripping lyrics authors in prog. I can only agree. He's a practising Catholic, and has a very personal take on his faith. Try e.g. these lines from the beginning of The Ministry:

The water's edge, Is where she waits, Lost soul still wandering, Meant to die, But she's stuck not crossing over.
The other side, Is where he waits, His spirit reaching out, Meant to save, But she's too scared, To take his hand.
Living in a world without you, Drowning in the past, Is living in no world at all, So now I call on you.

If you're interested in a discussion about the meaning of this sing, then you can find a fine discussion here:

I guess we'll simply have to accept different tastes there, PH and Maddox. For me, In The Presence Of Enemies, Forsaken, and The Ministry Of Lost Souls (on Systematic Chaos) are so extraordinarily gripping.

Well, the most important thing is the passion for music, and that we all three have.

NP  Scott Weiland: 12 Bar Blues.

Where's The Man (track 4). Wonderful askew melody, sung by one of the absolutely most exciting singers.

12 Bar Blues has got to be the most underrated album ever in man's history. I guess, mainly because Scott hasn't done anything to market himself - 12 Bar Blues, what a prosaic name, and that dumb nerdy picture of him on the cover. Typical Scott, there's no classic blues at all on the album, "blues" relates to the mood, which is daaark.

But, guys, this is a sparkling gem, don't cheat yourselves of a great musical experience.

Don't get me ( and probably PH too ) wrong. I really  love Sys Chaos. It's one of their best albums they've ever made. But Transatlantic...

That's just beyond words. In my opinion every prog fan has to like Transatlantic.  ;)
Opinion differ of course. That's okay for the reason mentioned below this.  ;D

Sun Caged: Artemisia.

Guys, this is red hot.

I like Ayreon a lot, but as I belong to the heavy fraction of the Room, SC are the real McCoy for me.

Man, Paul Adrian Villarreal is a real good singer, Marcel Coenen does some remarkable riffs, and the other guys know their stuff too. Melodic and tight music. If you like late Dream Theater and Symphony X, you'll go for this too, believe me.

As this was recommended before (you, Nicky?), I tried to get a a listen. Really excellent musicianship. What keeps me from buying it right away is - who would have guessed - the vocals. Actually, not the voice, I also find the singer really good, but the melodies. They have very nice arrangements throughout the album in two voices, but the melody lines - argh! Wailing, trying to sound elite, I don't really know how to describe it. The melodies just don't klick...
Arriving somewhere, but not here....

Nicky007

Yes, Cap, I've recommended it before. I partly agree with you: The melodies don't click - rightaway. It's been a difficult album for me to get into, and I foresee that'll be the case for most proggies. That's probably the reason why Sun Caged are still rather unknown, even in the Netherlands. The first half year, I listened to it off and on, never really being gripped, but now with the discussion on Dutch prog, I decided that I had to get to know it. After a few listens, track 2, A Fair Trade, turned out to be a killer song, and I've also started enjoying track 1, Lyre's Harmony. The further tracks - I don't know yet, but they definitely are growing on me. Additionally, reading the reviews of it (by i.a. our friend Murat), we can be certain that this is a top-notch album.

Here's Murat's review (and consider, he's always happy for a "Yes"):

The Smiths:  Meat Is Murder.

I got this album, because I agree with the title, but the music doesn't really agree with me  ;D

See, this is alternative and indie, and it bores me, because there's so little going on.

Of course one has to consider that the album is from 1984.

PH and Maddox, have you heard about these guys? Pretty good stuff  :D

I think TA was particularly good for Pete, as he shows his real temperament here. (Maybe Marillion should stop taking sedatives (ooo, Nicky, bad'un, but I'm right, aint I, Cap)).

Neal's singing here is tremendous (Pete's is Trewavas).
