Nice sharing, Teunis :)

I don't think that they've ever been mentioned in the Room before.

Got some super cd's in a second-hand shop and played:

Ayreon:  01011001

Black Country Communion:  2

Von Hertzen Brothers:  New Day Rising

Trevor Rabin:  Jacaranda

Also played Synkronizity's Cultivation three times, as it's very complex music.

Nice to see you mentioning an Ayreon cd. And you even got the binary digits right!
What do you think of "01011001"?

Yesterday I was listening (and enjoying) "Into The Electric Castle" by Ayreon. It struck me that there are so many memorable melodies on that one. Although I have to confess that half way into the second disc I get a little bit bored. But that's not limited to this disc or Ayreon. I have this with almost every double album.

Still listening to The Gentle Storm's "The Diary" a lot.
And at the moment enjoying "Second Nature" by Flying Colors. One of the best of 2014.

Nice to see you mentioning an Ayreon cd.

I listen to them now and then. I also have Electric Castle and Human Equation. I usually listen to'm when I want something relaxing. But they'r too cozy to be pantheon for me. I need something more edgy.

Arjen can do so much better, like with Guilt Machine, which is pantheon.

But I understand that he needs something with broad appeal to pay for his advanced studio and all the musicians that he makes excellent use of 8)

I of course copy/pasted ;D

As I wrote above. His language is not either that advanced, but to my knowledge, the philosophy of 01... should be very intriguing - have to get into that ....

Yeah, after about a cd of Ayreon, I also need something more exciting. Like:

NP  Keep of Kalessin:  Epistemology

Once again I'm amazed at how dull people are: I have mentioned at all relevant places that this is my "Metal album of the year" (2015) ! Now, if I had seen someone trustworthy make such a bold statement, I would'v picked up on it straightaway. But there is actually only one person who has responded - enthusiastically, naturally 8)

But of course it's a lot safer to listen to the same stuff over and over again :-\

Definitely, in the 'Now playing' thread ;).

Edit: I also mentioned the album 'Nine Lives' in the 'Favourite albums of 2013' topic. Where would we be without the 'search' function ::) :).

Guess I missed it cuz I didn't know about'm. It was enthusiastic comments on the FB-Timeline of Sagoth bassist Alistair MacLatchy that led me to test'm - and what a discovery *horns*

NP  Flying Colors I

Super album. All musicians are extraordinary on their instruments, Casey is a gripping singer, and the combination is stellar *horns*

It's a very worthy place for Mike I to harbor - was a bit worried about him ;)

And this album was my discovery of Steve Morse - he's unbelievable !!!

NP  Saturnian:  Dimensions *horns*

Here's a good tip to you guys: If ya wanna extend your horizons with some extreme metal - this is where things are really happening - then I can recommend Saturnian, Bal-Sagoth, and Keep of Kalessin. These are some of the most exciting and progressive groups, musically and philosophically. Each new album from them is a revolution 8)

But of course you're going into deep water with them. Dare it ? ;)

NP  Saturnian:  Dimensions *horns*

OK, I tried some YouTube vids. Some bits are really good! Reminded me of Dream Theater in some places (I think the guitar tone is responsible for this). I think it's not too heavy. The only thing that's extreme are the vocals. (I find them ranging between laughable and plain ugly) I like the orchestrations, the choirs and occasional piano. But again (and that's a big problem for me) the machinegun drumming is ruining everything. Totally unimaginative. If they lose the growling/grunting/screaming and start thinking about really putting effort in the rhythm section (instead of just filling everything with bass drum), this could be a very fine symphonic metal band.

PH

I'm now listening to Keep Of Kalessin's "Armada" album. 15 minutes in, this is honestly better than I expected. The vocals don't make me smile (that's a positive in this case). Still would prefer real singing, but alas. The drums are still sounding like machine guns, and that's a terrible terrible shame, because other than that, this actually doesn't sound that bad. To be honest, that acoustic guitar part around 11 minutes was pretty nice and a big surprise.
OK Nicky, I'm going to bed now, but I'll try some more Keep Of Kalessin tomorrow.

Teunis

Sylvan - Home

Still have a hate/love relationship with this band. Really like the music, but can't help but disliking the sometimes overreacted, screaming vocals from Marco Glühmann  ::). Others will call it 'emotion' but I'll keep it with this 'Progstreaming' listening.

The Gentle Storm ~ The Diary

The folky Gentle side (cd 1) is nice to listen to when you're in a romantic interlude (or longer ;) ) with your wife/girlfriend/fill in what suits you, but I  prefer the second Storm disc.
More metal. ;)

Could be nice to listen to when you're in a romantic interlude (or longer :P ) with your wife/girlfriend/fill in what suits you ( :-*) as well. ;)

OK, Paxi, Thanx for trying - brave of you 8)

At least you'll get an impression of how metal is breaking new ground ;)

Actually I find Sam Greenland's drumming on Dimensions very exciting and expressive, one of the many things that make this album one of metal's great masterpieces, but it did take me some listens to start noticing it; there's so much else that's more upstage.

Dimensions and Epistemology are two albums that sound overwhelming on first listens, but then when one starts enjoying them, they are very lasting, one doesn't tire of them.

With KoK I recommend that you go directly to Epistemology. KoK are one of the bands that have improved drastically with every album.

The title track Epistemology actually has a lot in common with The Count of Tuscany, something that DT fans will appreciate :)

The album Epistemology expands the limits of metal in all ways. Also the lyrics are transcendent.

It all depends on when you placed your order.
Because the band is on tour right now and won't be back home before 28th of April, everyone that orders the album, will get it after the 28th of April.
