it's about Metal-i-ca-n say.

;D

Just got my Starfire Burning Upon The Ice-Veiled Throne Of Ultima Thule cd. Guess who makes cd's with such titles ? ... Right! So I'm goin home to listen to it *horns*

Track 7 has what's to my knowledge the longest track title in rock history:

And Lo, When The Imperium Marches Against Gul-Kothoth, Then Dark Sorceries Shall Enshroud The Citadel Of The Obsidian Crown

Some groups are pretty wordy ;)

This is not the only thing that's extreme about this group ;D

We're really normal guys here in the Room, aint we :o

Well, a few of my fellow students were pretty hot on them. So I heard quite a few songs. But based on their further interests (both musically and otherwise) I didn't think too much of it. I tried listening to "Death Magnetic" when it came out, but I just don't find it interesting enough. I also listened to "Master Of Puppets" because that seems to be the best one according to almost anybody. It's even considered by some to be a masterpiece (of puppets) on ProgArchives. But I cannot really see why.
So they're not really in my niche.
They are not mine neither. I had much more fun with early Megadeth (I know that Nicky won't be alright with that  :)) even if I am very far from being a fan and gave up on them after Risk. To give a further explanation, I don't see anything like Tornado Of Souls, Holy Wars or even Symphony Of Destruction in Metallica's catalogue.

PP Nightwish - Century Child

NP The John Irvine Band - Wait And See
Once again, a great progstreaming discovery  8)

Nice story Iggy, thanks for sharing  ;)

NP IZZ - The Darkened Room

This album is really a fresh, modern, clever and moving piece of music. I find rather weird that this band is never mentioned in the Room but, hey, life is unfair ...

Love The darkened room and it is just about my fave prog album at the moment  :D

I need to hear them more. I actually have the Rust In Peace cd. I'l play it tonight. Thanx for reminding, Bupie :)

I definitely don't range Megadeth in the same league as Metallica. Metallica were pioneers, one can say that they more than any other band defined modern gritty metal. Without Metallica, there would be no Dream Theater as we know them today, with the dark side ;)

Interesting view Nicky

Megadeth circa Peace sells , So far so good so what and  Rust in peace where the equal of Ride the lightning , Master of Puppets era Metallica but the Black album changed the game somewhat.

Although Metallica post Black have been dreadful Megadeth occasionally pop up with something interesting - 13 for example.

And of course Mustaine was in Metallica ...  ;)

Yes, I did, very much so! Thanx for getting me onto them - properly this time - Bupie & Funky :)

Where Metallica are grim, weighty and melancholic, Megadeth are a breath of fresh air in metal, despite their name and lyrics, and still nicely twisted and experimental *horns*

Now I'm planning to get Th1rt3en soon 8)

I'v added Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman to my "Fave guitarists" list. They are brilliant!

NP  Bal-Sagoth:  A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria

The first of the Hexalogy. Just got the cd (from an Amazon shop). Have'm all now 8)

Wonderful, atmospheric, grim, melodic, esoteric, poetic. Promising, but not quite the Sagoth that I love. That came with the second cd Starfire *horns*

Sagoth is what fulfills my life these days. Deal with it - and go figure ;)

Glad to read that. Beware of XXIst century's Megadeth, though ! I heard nothing convincing coming from this period. My advice would be to listen to Youthanasia next : the first four songs are brilliant but it is more heavy metal than thrash. And no Megadeth album comes close to RIP for the guitar soli IMO.

8) Funky

They live in Sheffield. Not so far from Liverpool ;)

Also musically you're one of the closest in the Room :)

OK, Thanx for the tip. I'll add Youthanasia to my shopping list. However, I'll get Th1rt3een first (second), as I'v now heard so much about it ....  8)

NP  Manowar:  The Triumph Of Steel

This band is regarded by many as bizarre, which I consider is unfortunate and unjust, because they play some kickass metal. This album iac is *horns*

From Wiki:

"Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts is the longest (28 minutes and 38 seconds) and most complex Manowar song, and probably an anticipation of a concept album that was never accomplished. Because of its Homeric content, Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts has recently attracted the attention of a group of scholars at Bologna University in Italy. Mrs. Eleonora Cavallini, Professor in Classics, has written about this song:

'Joey DeMaio's lyrics imply a careful and scrupulous reading of the Iliad. The songwriter has focused his attention essentially on the crucial fight between Hector and Achilles, has paraphrased some passages of the poem adapting them to the melodic structure with a certain fluency and partly reinterpreting them, but never altering or upsetting Homer's storyline. The purpose of the lyrics (and of the music as well) is to evoke some characteristic Homeric sceneries: the raging storm of the battle, the barbaric, ferocious exultance of the winner, the grief and anguish of the warrior who feels death impending over him. The whole action hinges upon Hector and Achilles, who are represented as specular characters, divided by an irreducible hatred and yet destined to share a similar destiny. Both are caught in the moment of the greatest exaltation, as they savagely rejoice for the blood of their killed enemies, but also in the one of the extreme pain, when the daemon of war finally pounces on them. Furthermore, differently than in the irreverent and iconoclastic movie Troy, in Achilles, Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts, the divine is a constant and ineluctable presence, determining human destinies with inscrutable and steely will, and, despite the generic reference to 'the gods', the real master of human lives is Zeus, the only God to whom both Hector and Achilles address their prayers.'"

Actually I don't. But indeed, I often wondered what they're like. Most Flower Kings' side projects are pretty good.
I'm going to check them out.
