Listening to "Tales From Topographic Oceans".
Not bad at all. Doesn't grab me like Fragile or CTTE, but that's ok.
I thought some parts (particularly a synthesiser melody from 3:33 and onward on The Revealing...) reminded me of Milliontown (by Frost*).
Of course it's the other way around, I know.

IQ - Tales From The Lush Attic 2013 remix

On progstreamingclassic.com. Already own the original. The sound is way better, I've heard noises I didn't hear before. Still in doubt whether I will buy it or not. Frankly speaking I prefer new stuff, but IQ is one of my favourite bands. Decisions ....... . Bupie, you've got some advise for me?  ;)

Happy Easter to you and your family too, Funky  :)

Interesting that Persefone are an Andorran group; never heard of anythin comin from there  ???

Here's one for you, one of my pantheon groups, and fabulous song - now that you seem to have outlived your Enya phase  ;D

Anthriel:  Chains of the Past   www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RcCy_92K_4

Roomies don't seem to have fastened onto this great group (Finnish btw)... but then the're so many other fine groups and albums that they'r oblivious of  :(

Paxi, with Topographic it's particularly important that you get into the lyrics  ;)

Listened to the whole thing. Nice musicianship. For me, the singer (Simo?) doesn't come up to the others' level, though, mostly for his distinguishable accent.
Also, although being nicely surprised from time to time by the turns in the track, I was somehow missing some energy. The whole thing feels like "played down" like so... hah, can't explain it.

Today, while filing papers (from over a year...), I listened to Arena's SDoS, but stopped after about 25mins, and decided that I really don't like the singer's voice. Yes, again. I'm a voice fetishist.

Then I put on Seventh Wonder's Great Escape, listened to the whole thing, and decided to write the singer a mail, and ask him if he could do 30% less of the album at the top of his voice, cos he actually has a really beautiful voice, but he strains the "LaBrie" thing too much, if you know what I mean.

One for the prog metal fans amongst you

Now, that was something really new to me, thanks for that. Also, I don't know if I would buy such an album. They do the stile merge in a really cool way, but in the end the oriental stuff wakes in me pictures of couples rolling in the sheets, and the metal thing of chopper bikes and leather jackets... can't mix these up currently :) Yes, I know, clichés... but hey.

"Andorran prog/melo-death metal band Persefone proudly announces that the band has inked a worldwide record deal with ViciSolum Productions, which will release the new upcoming album Spiritual Migration on March 29th, 2013.

Spiritual Migration is Persefone's 4th studio album and was mixed by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Pretty Maids, Mercenary, Pestilence, Destruction etc.), at Hansen Studios in Denmark, and is a portrait of all the emotions the band has gone through within the first decade of their existence. Fine-tuning has never been a better word to describe the progression of a band than in the case of Persefone.

The artwork for Spiritual Migration was made by Travis Smith (Katatonia, Avenged Sevenfold, Nevermore)."

Simo Silvan (from the woods  ;) )

I actually find him very good - OK, not a new Russ Allen or Shadows - and tho I too am very sensitive to accents (as Roomies will know), his goes in very easily with me  8)

I'm actually surprised that you say "played down", as you usually don't like very wild stuff, Cap. To me, Chains is a piece of well-composed classic metal, with some real nice melody and, as you noticed, turns  :)

I'l admit, his singing is somewhat bland. But, as I wrote earlier, he's the messenger for Clive & Co's groundbreaking album. Get into the lyrics, Cap  ;)

;D  How do you measure "LaBrieness", and how dya make sure he doesnt stop at 29% ?  :D

Great album. And I really go for Tommy's expressive singing - but I'm also a sucker for drama  :)

Btw, on DT's recent albums, Jamie has toned down his "LaBrie thing"  ;)

Must say, you'r pretty critical about your music, Cap  :o

Guess I'm more of a romantic there. Got my top groups (won't tell  ;) ), but I can enjoy quite a range of music - just get nauseated by the TV & radio stuff  :-\

Guess I'm in a bit'f an A7 mood  ;)

@ Peter : I fully agree (incredible ! ;D) with Nicky on both :

- LaBrie toning down on the last two DT albums, which makes them even more outstanding to my ears  *horns*
- The Great Escape being a great album.

I am beginning to know your taste so I suggest that you try Circus Maximus' Nine. I think that songs as I Am or Reach Within should please you. And sorry for forgetting your birthday  ;)

@ Teunis : go for Tales, it is a safe pick and I am enjoying it much more than The Wake so far.

OK, probably used the wrong words here. What I wanted to say was that these guys composed a huge mountain of music here, but played it like it was all like the Netherlands, no ups, no downs, no blood, no sweat. Not as clinic as DT, but almost. I imagine someone who is really bored with spending his time in a studio or so, because the challenge is long gone and it's all routine. Maybe I'm just fantasizing things into this, though.

Actually I disagree with you there. There's quite enuff exitement and expression for my taste. And I like the perfectionism and elegance that's come outta all their work  *horns*

In the sense that it's their debut studio album iac  ;)

Maybe you can return to them one fine day. Imo they'r one of the best melodic progmetal bands around, quite up to Circus Maximus (Norwegian), Seventh Wonder (Swedish), & Royal Hunt (Danish)  *horns*
