I'd say Zep is one of the top few hard rock bands of all time ....

Nice answer, Greenie  :)

I have severe problems with the singer of PM. Imo, in all respects, CM are classes above PM, I have CM in the top league together with DT  *horns*

Great news: In a private event for fans, Circus Maximus revealed that their next album will be released June 1, and will be called Nine. They described the album being both more melodic and more dynamic than the two previous albums. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circus_Maximus_(Norwegian_band)

And: Nine is the third full-length studio album by the Norwegian progressive metal band Circus Maximus. The album will be [or rather should now have been, nb] released on June 1, 2012.

The album is being described as more melodic and dynamic than the previous album. The album is also more guitar-oriented. "The majority of the material on the new record was written by Mats Haugen and he has taken the music to a kind of simpler and more accessible approach, yet kept the progressive elements and the "nerve" that is Circus Maximus" says Truls Haugen. Circus Maximus will appear live in some selected shows in the summer before launching a full scale tour in support of the new album. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_(Circus_Maximus)

Man, gotta get that asap !

Played some Danish groups - Section A, The Arcane Order, Mnemic - and that was interesting in many ways ... but in short, it didnt change my position that there is only one Danish prog pantheon group: Anubis Gate  *horns*

If any of you guys like some Danish rock music, I'd like to hear of it  ;)

NP  Adagio:  Archangels in Black

Super  *horns*

Bupie, you should play some of the excellent French prog: Adagio, Gojira, Demians, Spheric Universe Experience  ;)

Interesting points Nicky but PM do more for me than DT ! Please forgive such blasphemy  ;)

At least we can agree that Circus maximus rock a big fat one  *horns*

Downloaded the 2 Fifth Angel albums this morning together with some Fates Warning - the spectre within and awaken the guardian - more their power metal then progressive metal albums so maybe the latter albums will be next on my radar

For a while I wasnt too hot on the first three with John Arch, but I play'm now and then, and they'r slooowly growing. Who knows where that'l end .....

I'm not either so excited about the recent Arch/Matheos album, but I plan to get it soon .....

Just got Star of Ash's The Thread from the Amazon "Julemand", as Ms 007 calls him  ;D

Gonna go home and play it. Some nice black metal, very melodic, atmospheric, and not so heavy, with Ihriel, Ms Ihsahn, at the helm  8)

Maybe somethin for you, Funky Boy  ;)

I too get turned off by the satanic thingy (being a Christian), but Funky, there's masses of so-called black metal that's elsewhere. You know that too: Enslaved, Arcturus, Opeth, Scar Symmetry, Nevermore, Ihsahn, Emperor, etc. Lots of it is basically pagan, often glimpsing toward Christianity. "Black metal" has just become another of these many loose designations. It's just a way of indicating a dark or somber sound  ;)

Played:

Steppenwolf:  Monster

One of the great classics of rock. John Kay was genius  *horns*

Sun Caged:  The Lotus Effect

Super, good lyrics too  *horns*

ICS Vortex:  Storm Seeker

First listen. Great  *horns*

NP  Eumeria:  Rebel Mind

This album has all that an edgy proggie desires:  The solid and vigorous base/rhythm section, the daaark sound of Loomis, the blast beats of All That Remains, angelic (like Jamie) and mercurial (like Bradley) singing, a guitarist up there with JP and Loomis, just as sparing and penetrating, keys like Rudess, lots'o melody ... and it all sounds  *horns* *horns* *horns*

Requires some adaption, of course  ;)

As I said in an earlier post, I regard these guys as the current flagbearers of prog  8)

Therefore it's strange that no other Roomies play'm  ???

What's a bit lacking, compared to the rest, is the lyrics, which are not so advanced, but then, these guys are only in their twenties ... and after all, the album title is Rebel Mind. (In prog, lyrics are usually the best indicator of the age of band members.) With this powerful music, one would'v enjoyed some lyrics ala Clive, JP, or Glenn. But with these guys, I'm sure it'l come  :)

Again:

Threshold - "Dead Reckoning"

Threshold is something special. Technically they are really fine musicians, but it goes beyond that. This is super melodic music.
This is the sort of Metal I can play for my dad. I remember he liked a couple of songs, and not only the soft ones.

NP: King Crimson - Red

Contemplating getting another album by each of the above.  For MV, it'll be Frances the Mute.  I have some ideas for VdGG.  Any suggestions for KC?  (I have Red and Discipline, plus In the Court of the Crimson King on tape or vinyl somewhere or other.)  I was thinking maybe Larks Tongues in Aspic.

Greenie, I suggest that you get some of their later stuff. The territory covered by them in the 34 years of their studio album releases is greater than any other group I can think of. I can recommend The Power To Believe, their latest, from 2003 - super album  *horns*

Good question, Funky  ???

Can't be me, cuz I'm sooo shy  :-[

But I'm sure you'l like'm. Be patient tho, this music is a ripper, right from start  *horns*

Did you actually get the album, Funky ?

NP  Genesis:  Trick Of The Tail  (on repeat)  *horns*

This one seemed remote to me, so I'm givin it some runs  8)

Strange that they'd be doin that disco stuff ten years later  ???

Well, it must have been hard losin such talented musicians as Gabriel and Hackett - and one's wife  :(

Yes (the band) certainly turned back after Relayer to be more accessible, which they were with the fabulous Going For The One, but they never sold out like Genesis ... well, except for Owner Of A Lonely Heart, but that was a single, man, not a whole album.

Primal fear - Black sun (more Priest than Priest  *horns*;)

I don't know'm, Funky, I'v only heard the name. I'v added them to my groups to check. Thanx  :)

However, if they'r like pre-Painkiller Priest, I'm not too interested. What many people fail to realise is that Priest changed tremendously already with Painkiller, and particularly afterwards. They became real progressive, in music and lyrics. The change with Painkiller (1990) is, to my knowledge, due to mainly two factors: Rob pressed on the guys to go much heavier, as Metallica, Slayer and several other groups where taking metal in that direction; and probably due to Priest's desire to go heavier, they exchanged Dave Holland with the killerdrummer Scott Travis. Priest's sadly underrated Jugulator (1997) and Demolition (2001) are real groundbreaking albums ... and then of course Nostradamus .....  ;)

Forget about Maiden, man. They started out being a Priest clone, they were never anything near as groundbreaking, and they never really changed, only following the general trend toward heavier  :-\

In crime, one says: Follow the money. In rock, if one wants to be upfront, one follows the edge  ;)

NP  Judas Priest:  Ram It Down  *horns*

Actually, one can already see some progression in Ram, mainly in the lyrics, e.g. Monsters Of Rock, where they talk about how metal arose out of the mists of the Black Country  8)

I don't quite know about ORwarriOR, but I'v played it some three times, and it hasnt really gripped me. Mabool is in any case more accessible  ;)

Quote
Adagio

*horns*

"It started many years ago, out of the black country
The seed became the embryo, for all on earth to see
Like stealth the word spread mouth to mouth, all corners of the land
And soon the thing began to grow, and get right out of hand

From the concrete jungle
The smoke, the dirt, the grime
Could not contain the hunger
It grew and grew in time, into a

Monster, Monster of rock
They could never bind it
It vowed to reach the top
Monster, Monster of rock
They could never bind it
Impossible to stop

Took the sound across the seas, the people stood in awe
At last the sound had come to them
That they'd been waiting for

And millions roared, and millions cheered
This spectacle on stage
And everyone went crazy as it bellowed out in rage"

Primal fear are very Painkiller influenced Nicky and well worth a listen.

As per usual  ;) i cannot agree with your views on Maiden. To say that the likes of Powerslave and seventh son of a seventh son are not progressive are just plain wrong. In fact prior to nostradmus it is Maiden who made the far more progressive albums and Priest who dumbed down to try to capture the American market - Ram it down and turbo being the guilty parties until painkiller reedemed them. Unless it could be argued that it was an attempt to capture a more thrash oriented market.

Opinions , opinions eh.

OK, Funky, I'l admit that I'm not a big fan, and thus not an expert, on neither pre-Painkiller Priest nor Maiden at all. From Painkiller on, i.e. with Jugulator, Demolition, Angel of Retribution, Nostradamus, and the official live albums from that period, YES, here I am a big fan and, if not an expert, at least very knowledgable about both music and lyrics  *horns*

I just found out that there are lotta forums on Maiden vs Priest .....  ;)
