NP Motörhead - No Sleep'Til Hammersmith

Some people see it as one the best live albums ever. Some people see it as the birth of thrash metal. OK, it's full of energy but it's not enough to counterbalance the almost complete lack of melodies (Ace Of Spades excepted) and as you may know I am not a big fan of thrash metal to say the least so ... I'll put it on my "shelf-clearance" list  :P

NP  To-Mera:  Delusions

The heavy brother of Haken. Super stuff, pantheon with me  *horns*

Funky, Iggy, Mad, Tom, Paxi welcome to the heavy club  ;)

Btw Iggy, do you know about this project:  www.amazon.com/Levin-Torn-White-Tony/dp/B005H492PI/ref=pd_sim_m_1

Nicky.

Still, I'm not convinced by To-Mera.
Haken is tremendously good but in no comparison to To-Mera.

Just another gothic clone, in my opinion. (This will hurt...)

Nope, it's just the usual thing with you, Mad:  You'r too impatient  ;)

Just the fact that you call'm gothic  ::)

That's like callin Enya death metal, or Scar Symmetry folk music  ;D

If you want a further specification of To-Mera, it could be somethin like melodic progjazzmetal  :)

And we have found ourselves a new label!!
Yay to us!!!  *horns*

Eh...you. ;)

You're maybe right, the word Gothic might be prejudice in this matter but the bottom line is that there's something in To-mera that I don't like.

But maybe that's prejudicial as well since I only listened to the youtube songs.

Yep.

Very epical (10min + songs) and very technical.
A bit like Haken but more metallish.
Musically it's okay but the singer is not to everyone's liking.
Their last album Oblivious to the Obvious is very very good but also a 2cd album.
I usually don't listen to it in one run. Too difficult.

NP Proto-Kaw : Before Became After

Proto-Kaw is the reunion of the Kansas line-up that preceded the successful Kansas line-up, Kerry Livgren being the sole common member to both line-ups.

Since he had left the successful Kansas line-up for ages, Kerry Livgren had the idea to release demos of the first and unsuccessful/unsigned line-up. He released these demos under the name Proto-Kaw (which is some kind of a primitive name for Kansas Native Americans). This release is called Early Recordings From Kansas 1971-1973. Then Kerry Livgren had the idea to reunite this long lost line-up and record new songs. This gave Before Became After (I guess the above explanations give enough clues for the album's title) and two subsequent albums.

As a huge Kansas fan, I had to check out. So did I. So far, I really don't know what to think  ::) except that I am pretty sure that nobody read all the above, wikipedia making a better job than me at explaining those kinds of things ...

NP Dream Theater - ADTOE

I had put this one aside after a few listens. I come back to it and, man, once again they made a great album. I mean, how many bands can produce songs like Breaking All Illusions ? DT will always be a love/hate band, they will always be accused of -self or not- plagiarism (the last attack comes from MP himself, accusing BMUBMD to be a blatant rip-off of the first song of Red's last album, an album that JP has ranked n° 1 in his list of 2011 best albums) but they are still at the top of the game, 20 years after I&W. On a personal note, since BC&SL, I find James' voice way less irritating than, for instance, on SFAM where I really struggled with the vocals on fast songs.

Hey Teunis, you'r not supposed to be that fresh  ;)

Well, the problem was that I didnt like Believe that much, when I got it a few years ago. I didnt like Nick's singing, and I didnt find much melody. So I put Pendragon on the backburner till now. But OK, I see now that I have to get some Pendragon albums asap  8)

Teunis, you should do the same thingy with DT. Or start with the fabulous Explorers Club's Age Of Impact, and experience the magic that Master JP can evoke on his guitar, plus all the other amazing musicians there - mmmmmm  :)

'Believe' surely isn't the best album to start with. 'Pure' or 'Not Of This World' would be a good start or my current favourite 'The Window Of Life'. And the latest one 'Passion', if you don't mind yodel or rap ;). The track 'This Green And Pleasant Land' is the best the album has to offer imo.

I must say I don't make excursions into prog metal very often, but I'll definetely put that on my playlist. :) Very curious how it develops over the 30 minutes.

For me today, as I almost forgot about that album this year:

my favourite songs from
Jethro Tull - Christmas album... Weathercock, Fire at Midnight, Greensleeves, First snow on Brooklyn, Bouree...
'I can do anything, I'm still the child.'

Why do you use the alias tired_of_dancing ?

Actually I don't either feel like dancing to the usual stuff that's played at partys and in dance halls - except if Ms and I wanna romaaaaanticise. But put on somethin that rocks like crazy, like Alley Cat, and ya got me dancin all over the place, on chairs and tables, up the pillars, on the roof, wherever, man  8)

I'm annoyed by the regular "dumping" of fine groups like Arena and Pendragon in the standard neo-prog bin, as it's become. It gives the impression that these groups are just rehashing hackneyed stuff, album after album. Superficial attitude, and sad  :(

OK, if you don't have that emotion (yet), fine, then bypass them, but the thing is, as I see it, that these musicians have found a very special vein that appeals to many of us proggies, a world that they explore and evolve, and with every new album, they bring joy and fulfillment into our lives. Aint that so, guys ?

If you are a Tull fan, I suggest that you try the last Manning album, especially the first song entitled The Year Of Wonders. It should remain you of another band  ;)

About Pendragon, I don't listen to them much though I have a bunch of old albums, including Kowtow (which I am almost the only man on Earth to enjoy, as for Menel's IQ albums), The Window Of Life and (I think) The Masquerade Overture. Since the last two failed to move me, I gave up on the band, until Pure which is remarkable. I don't know Passion yet. I also have three live albums, Concerto Maximo, Utrecht ... The Final Frontier and my favorite, the old 9:15 Live, which features the poppy (and hence hated by most fans) Red Shoes. Guess what ? I love the song  8)
