The Butterfly Man

Hi there, I figured that since I now have more than 100 posts on this forum, it's about time to finally post my listening profile! ;D
So here we go. I know it's a fairly long list, but I still listen regularly to all of it (gotta love the shuffle function on the iPod!). By the way, these are cd's I actually own, so no downloads! ;)

Great list, Tom. Most of your albums are also favorites with me.

It's not hard to see what your three favorite groups are: You're a real collector with Arena, Dream Theater, and Marillion.

But I must say that I have a hard time understanding how you can keep together Dream Theater and H-Marillion to such a degree.

But I guess that's the way we are, us proggies: Mysteries.

Pink Floyd
- Pulse   (DVD)

If there's anything I really miss in your list, Tom, then it's the Floyd catalog, but I missed it in PH's and Appelmoes' LP's too. I guess that it's not obvious to the generation following mine that every good proggie needs Pink Floyd.

I really enjoy listening to Pink Floyd from time to time. Pulse is the only Floyd-item that I own myself, but I also have A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. The reason why it´s not in my listening profile is that it belongs to my dad...But I enjoy listening to that album massively, especially the track On The Turning Away.
On the other hand I do have a couple more albums by them on my computer, namely Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here. I think from what I´ve heard of them I like Dark Side Of The Moon best. If you check my listening profile I also have a DVD from Dream Theater of them covering the entire Dark Side Of The Moon-album. Great DVD by the way, you should check it out!

Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the tip of DT playing Dark Side. Sure gotta have that one. Man!

Yes, I agree that Dark Side is their best. There's something very special about it. I don't wanna tell you how many times I've heard it - studio, bootleg, live - because you'd then fall down from your chair. It's not too much to say that I grew up with Dark Side next to me.

In a solemn moment, what I like most about Arena, beside their extraordinarily deep lyrics, is that they took over the Floyd-sound. Weep weep.

Hey, come on, PH, Floyd is all over Arena's music, although I then have to add that Arena also have a lot more to offer, they definitely have their own Arena sound.

I can only say: Get the Floyd albums on my Past Masters List. You simply can't go wrong with them.

Paradise Lost is awesome!

Ahem... Tom?

Yeah I like it a lot! I think it is more heavy than their other albums but in all this heavyness they are able to keep a certain amount of melody which I find very attractive. Also Russel Allen seems to sing in a more agressive way, his voice sounds more 'raw' than ever before. I think my favourite track at the moment (this changes daily at the moment) is The Sacrifice which I think has a truly brilliant melody. I get shivers every time I listen to it.
The only thing that is sort of lacking (well, lacking is not exactly the right word but hopefully you know what I mean), is an epic a la The Odyssey. Don't get me wrong, I like Paradise Lost very much but as The Odyssey is my all time favourite SymX track I would like such a song on every album! I guess I'm just spoiled...;D I'm looking forward to seeing them live for the very first time on October 9th, when they are 'special guests' on Dream Theater's Chaos In Motion tour.

Christ 0 is another fine example of how a good progmetal album should sound. I'm not that familiar with Vanden Plas' earlier work but I think this album has to be among their best, and if not their other albums have to be more than amazing! I really like the orchestral arrangements on Christ 0, an influence that clearly originates from their theater engagements in the past. My favourite track on this album is January Sun, by a mile. I don't know how to describe it but it simply ticks all my boxes ;).

That's it for now, I'm off to bed!

Cheers, Tom

That's exactly what they are, Tom. Beyond Daylight is just as unbelievably good as Christ 0, although the thematic material of Christ 0 is blasting.

Thanks for your characterisation. We seem to be very much on line.

See, that's just the thing: It's very heavy, and very melodic.

I really love the way he sings now  *horns*  (I added an l and a g)

No tomfoolery here, I agree fully.

Funny, I know that a lot of proggies are epic junkies, but I dont need that, as long as it rocks and the lyrics juggle my mind, and that's the case with PL.

But agreed, The Odyssey is brilliant.

> I'm looking forward to seeing them live for the very first time on October 9th, when they are 'special guests' on Dream Theater's Chaos In Motion tour.

Lucky bastard. I'm gonna try hit Stockholm, but I dont know whether SyX will play too.

I agree. It's way heavier than the previous album and Russel does an excellent job on it. Really love the artwork of the Special edition too. Probably the best i've seen this year.
Since i'm a sucker for epics i too miss a long song on PL. Read an article in Aardschok (Dutch metal megazine) that they didn't do that on purpose. Don't know if that improved the album though since i like it as it is.
But to me the album is a grower. Didn't really knew what to think of it when i first heard it but now i like it even more.

That's a good thing.  :D

QuoteI'm looking forward to seeing them live for the very first time on October 9th, when they are 'special guests' on Dream Theater's Chaos In Motion tour.

Me too though i will see them on October 4th when they attend at the Loto Arena in Antwerp, Belgium. Wanted to go to the Dutch gig as well but on the time i booked for Antwerp, i didn't know the date. Since it's only five days later i think i'll skip that one.
Maybe they will return next year. Then i'll probably will go.  ;D

Funny you mention January Sun, Tom. It holds every good thing that makes Vanden Plas a top band. I actually consider it a musical-lite. You can taste the drama and emotion in the song. I also like Silently which has the best and sometimes funny lyrics of Christ. O.

Yeah me too. Especially after Paradise Lost. I don't really know to which of the 2 bands I'm looking forward to the most to be honest! Well Dream Theater is my alltime favourite band but now I'm in a Symphony X-period so maybe that explains it a bit...

By the way, I recently added a DVD to my list, it's from the Foo Fighters and it is called Skin And Bones. It's an 'acoustic' concert and highly recommended if you just wanna chill out on a nice summer evening together with your loved ones (in my case, a couple of beers!)... ;D

Tom, we really need to find a nice woman for you. Beer is great, but after all .... If Yappy Appy can get one, then you can too. Aint there some single women here in the Room? And trust me gals, you got a guy here who's hot on Arena and Dream Theater, so whether you take him to the theater or arena, he'll be your dream man  ;D

Tom, I'll admit that the Foo Fighters aint anywhere near the top of my hitlist, but maybe you could tell us what you like about Skin And Bones.

Enjoy your beers, by the way. I'm havin one too now. Old Speckled Hen is next in line, John. In Denmark it's real dream summer at the moment, and a good cold beer goes well with a sunny evening.

I liked your pun: in my case, a couple of beers!
