Title: Kino
Post by: Moonloop on Thu, 2005-01-27, 09:18:50
For anyone who hasn't heard about this band, it's -

John Mitchell (Arena)
John Beck (It Bites)
Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Transatlantic)
Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree)

The debut album "Picture" is out on Feb 28th. A limited initial pressing will be a digipck with a bonus live DVD.

Not entirely sure what the style of music will be but you can guess that there will be a 'prog' angle to it  ;D

I heard a couple of songs on the radio (Dutch radio) in the past weeks, and it sounds really great! That's not very strange because the guys of Kino are well known musicians in the world of progrock.  :)
Only It bites isn't so familiar for me.

Kino will be on tour from mid to end of March. See our calendar (http://forum.the-ricochet.net/index.php?action=calendar;year=2005;month=3) and the news page (http://www.kinomusic.com/news.htm) on the kino wepage.

"It Bites" were a great band, totally under-rated, probable due to having a fluke hit single "Calling All The Heroes" off their debut album. Suggest you get "Once Around The World" which should be available quite cheaply these days.  ;D

"Once Around The World" ahhhhh a hidden classic of a prog album. Unfortunately i have it on tape, unfortunate because my old tape player chewed it up BANG on that beautiful ending to the title track.  :'(
Must check out the "It Bites" website to see if i can get it on CD.

Last weekend the boys (John, John & Pete) played a marvellous acoustic set on the Marillion fanclub gig in Utrecht. [Can anyone post the exact order of the songs?]
They played one Urbane song, two It-Bites tracks and a handful Kino-stuff, inlcuding the epic (acousticly!).
Since I hadn't heard a note of the album, it was all new to me, but I was very much impressed. Some bits inmediatley grab me by the throat. I was very moved by "Picture", which must have come from John's deepest inner feeling, as was noticable. Completely honest and fragile.
Had a wonderful backstage-moment afterwards....
Hope to see them when on tour....!

(2 seriously great albums though and I also gather Francis Dunnery's new album is due anytime now - not sure when as his site is undergoing a rework so it hasn't been updated since Dec)

Yeahhhhhhhh!!!  ;D Got it!!!!!!!!  ;D , Picture was in the shops yesterday, as promised!!  :D

great stuff!! of all members I guess musically it's closest to It Bites (if one would want to compare Kino to the bands it's members belong to that is) , but with a 'harder' edge... chorusses are of the 'will-stick-in-your-head-for-days' type  :)

All songs are killers, current favourites (listened to it for 2 days now) are 'Letting Go', 'Leave a Light on', 'All You See' and 'Holding On'. The prog epic (hehe) is growing a little slower, but I'm sure 'Loser's day parade' will be a favourite aswell.......
Go get this one, it rocks!!!!!!!

Looking forward to March 15 in Zoetermeer. Judging on this album, sequence of bands performing (Kino/Spock's Beard) should be the other way around............    ;D

Cheers,
Marc

ps. haven't got round to playng the dvd included yet, but I have seen the Rockpalast gig several times now (dvd-r); impressive stuff.... especially for a 2nd gig!!!!!!

As you say Torch, very akin to "It Bites" (no bad thing). Hope it becomes a 'proper band' and isn't a one-off project.

actually Kino confirmed it isn't a one-off project!!! During the interview for Rockpalast Pete confirmed this........ (I think he even mentioned that they allready have a contract for a couple of albums with Inside-Out).......

...Apart from A.C.T., Arena, Ayreon, After The Fire, Asia, Barclay James Harvest, Blind Guardian, Boston, Camel, City Boy, Citizen Cain, Caravan, Cafe Jaques, Billy Squier, Beltane Fire, The Buggles, The Boomtown Rats, (in no particular order, you understand...!), and The Wombles <err... haven't you skipped a few shelves - ed?!>

Ok, Loopy....You're forgiven.....JUST....!  ;)

Beltane Fire released one album on vinyl, called "Different Breed", back "in the day"...

They tried to get a CD release, through Malc @ GFT, and yet failed (!)...clash of personalties, as I understand it...

There was a rumour of a second LP release - I even pre-ordered a copy through the HMV record-store in Oxford, in about 1992...

And on top of the LP not being released (for whatever reasons - none available to me...!), I was virtually kicked-out of HMV for wasting the manager's time, by ordering product that was not available....!  :P

Go figure...!

LOL..!! Makes a change from HMV not being able to get products which are available  ;D  ::)

Thanks for the Beltane Fire history anyway - didn't know they had discussions with GFT..!! Don't suppose their only album wil ever get a CD pressing either  :-\

...had a job to centre the LP onto the CD, even with quick-drying superglue, but eventually (with the aid of a 10lb lump-hammer), I got track four (side one) to play....once....  ;D

They folded by default when Neal Morse quit Spock's and the (non-religious) music scene. Mike Portnoy has gone on record (whatever that counts for) as saying Transatlantic would have to be the original 4 members to record again - which is a damn shame as they did 2 stunning albums.  :-[

Whereas Transatlantic has a gentle hint at the ocean between two halfs of that band, Kino is just a far-fetched name for extraordinary prog-band. Not too clever, in my view.  :-\

At first they were called THE ARM BAND, then NOT THE ARM BAND.  :o It was the InsideOut lable, which ordered to chose a more convenient name for new prog-act.  And I've read that there were a lot of disputes between four guys.  ???

The full track listing is as follows:

People (live)
Throw It Away (demo)
Perfect Tense (live)
All You See (demo)
Room For Two (live)
Won't Fall Down (demo)
Picture (live)
Say You Will (demo)
Parade (Kevin Gilbert cover)

A special CD with bonus material!
Since this is finally the first band I've followed from the beginning, I'll buy this one, before it runs out!

I'm going to the gig on 10 december this year, so I'll hold some money back! ;D

I think you should buy it! It's great, especially "Throw it away" "Won't fall down" "Say you will" and the ghosttrack (secret 10th track) which is an instrumental piece (the piece WITH vocals will be on the next CD).

There's been a lot of rumours going around that talk about Kino splitting up.
But fortunately this isn't the case.

Because John Mitchell won't register to this website (yet(?)) I can quote him from the Kino forum:

Quote from: John Mitchell, Kinomusic.comYeah, can everyone stop speculating please!

We ARE doing Calprog and we ARE doing a CRS Christmas gig. Martin very kindly invited us back recently and it seems like a nice way to end the year!

Pete is very busy writing with Marillion at the moment and JB and myself have been doing a bit of writing.

And that's all I can really report right now.

John xxx

The fact that he and John Beck are writing is... just... well... ehh... good!
Nothing to worry about!

(Why am I posting this...)

Maybe it isn't, though i think it's prog-lite  ;), but that isn't the question here. Kino is Arena related and if we discuss projects of John JoWit for instance, it's only fair and obvious that we do the same thing with John Mitchel.

Beside that, i personaly think that Kino makes great music.  :)

Try to read some information at Progressive Ears website. I have doubt that guys will make one more studio release.  :(

I've read the things on Progressive Ears, but I'm not sure.
John Mitchell tells us he's writing with John Beck now. And if he does what he says, he'll be writing with John Beck now.

Advise from me: just wait and see. ;D

I personally think that that's a good advice.  ;)

Wait and see...Good advice PH

As far as I am concerned you have a post on the Kino forum (as PH's post above) indicating that they are not splitting up, there is also on the same forum a post from Martin Hudson saying-

QuoteKino/ CRS Christmas Party
Kino plus Touchstone
Oakwood Centre, Rotherham
Saturday 2nd December 2006
Tickets will be on sale next week.
£15 to non CRS members and £12 to members
01709 702575
Come on get behind the guys and give yourself an early Christmas present!
Thanks for all the constructive comments. All taken on board!

The only problem with the Kino board is anyone can post any comment they like useing ANY name they choose. I however belive these  to be genuine.

This from progessive ears -

QuoteThis is what Lee from Galahad posted just 2 days ago on the Spocks Beard boards:

"Mike, just to say, I noticed a few people on the Kino forum are doubting your "source" (who-ever that may be? ), but it still doesn't change the fact that I heard it from John M himself - Kino are splitting after Calprog.

Shit, he has also said as much on that fourm (we will goout with a bang at Calprog!) but they all seem to be in denial over there!

Galahad were offered the support for that Christmas gig they are talking about and I asked John if that would be OK for us to support them and he said "Sorry mate, but Kino aren't doing anymore gigs"

So someone is spouting bollocks.

Just hope Kino don't split.

Hmmmm It would really shock me if they would split up....

They have just released 1.5 albums... ;) (2nd one aint really an album)
It would be very soon to split afther just that...

But all these rumours concern me tho... and of course the fact that they wanted to have selled more CD's by now also concerns me...

but indeed time will tell the true story

Saw Kino play for Martin Hudson's CRS and they were brilliant.  Earlier comments reference another gig.  This has been posted to the latest CRS magazine.  I will be there, in Rotherham UK, on 2nd December.  I shall treat it as an early Christmas prezzie.

Well, I hope we're through the whole splitting up rumour now.

Something else.

On my keyboard I was trying to play the tenth track of the CD; Picture.
It isn't really that hard but when the "Mighty arcs of sound" comes in I get confused, how am I suposed to play that?
Can any musician with good ears set it on paper? I need a piano tab now...

First problem (see post above) is solved. Can play it now! ;D But I need three hands... :D

Ok next problem:

I need the lyrics for the Cutting Room Floor songs. I can't hear what is being said, maybe someone else can.
It's about these songs:
- Throw It Away (demo)
- All You See (demo)
- Won't Fall Down (demo)
- Say You Will (demo)
- Parade

Note: the lyrics of the demo version of All You See isn't the same as on the album version.

Could somebody tell me what album of Kino I should check out first?
Is it AOR stylewise? Or softprog?

Picture - it is a fantastic album, I guess you would call it Prog/Rock/ with the odd Pop infuence.

I am missing Kino so much these days  :'(  Picture was such a romantic/melodic/refreshing/unpretentious piece of music ! Sorry, I guess this is not a very useful nor interesting remark but I had to let the words flow ...

New album 'Radio Voltaire' to be released on 23td March 2018. Who would expect that? Here's the link:

Oh man! That is big news!! Fantastic! I never expected that!

Although, it would probably be very difficult to surpass the debut. "Picture" is the best example of a marriage between pop and prog. Some of that magic was brought over to It Bites (on a few songs), but still, nothing touches "Picture".

If "Radio Voltaire" is half as good as "Picture", I'll be more than satisfied. I hope it doesn't sound too much like Lonely Robot, because (although very good) I didn't notice the similarities so much that everyone was talking about.

Teunis, you totally made my day!

With these musicians it can't be a bad album :). The anticipation ...  8) ;).

Well... it DOES sound like Lonely Robot...

I really hope some more Kino-sounding songs will be on the album.
I don't mean to say this is a bad song, not at all! But there's no Kino magic on this song, for me.
Oh man... I'm sounding like a bitter fan... I WILL pre-order this as soon as I get the chance!

Indeed, this one could be on the last LR album, but it's only one song. Let's wait till we hear the entire album :).

On some webshops you can already listen to samples of each song.
Most of it sounds a lot like Lonely Robot, but I also heard a few bits that sounded more Kino-like.
I also think this sounds proggier than "Picture". As if they decided that Loser's Day Parade was the direction that they would like to go. But that song (although very cool!) was not really representative for the whole album. I do have a feeling that we will be missing John Beck in the writing process...
But, you know, they are just (low quality) samples, so what am I even 'complaining'? (It's not really complaining, I'm just very protective of what I hold dear, in this case the first album.)
Oh so many different feelings and thoughts about this!
I'm Still VERY excited about this. Time to pre-order.

5 out of 10... :'(

Especially this part confirms my fears:

"In the bio that came with the album, it is noted the John wanted to create a third Lonely Robot album, but Inside Out told him it was too soon for that.  So, they asked him to do a new Kino album, which obviously is something that wasn't on his mind."

Still, it's only one review. I'll see if I can find some other reviews.

That's not 'sounding' good, but it's indeed 1 review. I want to give the album a fair chance and form my own opinion. Bring it on :).
