Title: "Hanging Tree" on new compilation CD
Post by: Moonloop on Thu, 2005-07-28, 16:24:08
There's a new (Dutch only I think) compilation CD just released called "The Best of Symfo Rock" which is a 3CD set and features (amongst some other great tracks) Arena with "Hanging Tree". See link:

http://www.imusic.dk/item/0602498303320/v-a-2005-best-of-symfo-rock-cd

No entirely sure but is this the first time an Arena track has featured on a commercially available compilation CD..?? (excluding promos, samplers etc..)

It's also available through Amazon.

;D

Oops  :-[

Missed that one, wrists well and truely slapped  :-[

Still, look on the positive side, it's twice as likely for people to notice it now  ;D

Read the review. Some interresting bands along with some poor choices. Kees Baars knows a lot about music, but i wouldn't categorize Rainbow or Manfred man's earth band as SYMPHO, though. But that's my opinion.
Who cares?  ::)

Agree. Maybe they're meaning the tracks rather than the artists though  :-\

Given the 'liquid' nature of these last posts, I'm sure there's a 'milking it' pun in there somewhere  ;)  ;D

Sorry...

Having worked around studios and PAs a lot, I now find that miking things up has become second-nature to me.

Not any more, sadly...

A major back-operation put paid to that...

I'm now a professional word-player on The Internet...

Ah, tiot...that'll be that "miking it pun" wasted then...

The temptation to say "what, to help you get up off it..??" is almost overwhelming  ;D , however, having fallen downstairs 2 years ago and rotated my spine out of alignment in the process, I have nothing but total empathy for you.

Forget painkillers though, I find beer helps - unfortunately, you can't get it on prescription  >:(

The temptation to say "you can't get free beer on Northern Railway Stations either" is almost too overwhelming to resist.

Fortunately, I have strong will-power, and so I won't say it.  ;D

*sigh*
To get back on topic:

Genesis seems to be a norm to progrock, bands are often compared to Genesis.
What is Styx doing on there??

And (I'm sorry to say that) I hate Focus' Hocus Pocus...

It's a compilation of Symphonic Rock tracks, not prog. Styx are without any shadow of a doubt, a fine example of a symphonic rock band.  ;D

Apology accepted  ;)

I thought Symphonic Rock was a part of Progressive Rock? ???
But Styx... I have my doubts.

Congratulations  :D , you've successfully spotted one of the biggest problems with a band being labelled "Prog"  ;D (ie, no-one really knows what it means.!!)

Look within this forum for example and you'll hear mention of (and please forgive the labelling  :-[ )  :

Old Prog : Genesis, Yes, Floyd, ELP
Neo Prog : IQ, Arena, Pendragon
Synth Prog : Tangerine Dream, Eloy, The Enid
Modern Prog : Radiohead, Mars Volta, Elbow, Mew
Metal Prog : Threshold, Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery

then you get bands like Caravan, Hawkwind, Uriah Heep  etc who used to be called Prog at the time but aren't now

It's all very complicated, you'd be hard pressed to find 2 bands more different than Dream Theatre and Tangerine Dream yet they've both appeared under the prog tag. Wierd isn't it  :)

Personally, I just listen to "music which appeals"  ;D  ;D

Yup!
I look on progarchives.com every now an then.

Oh and Dream Theater is spelled with Theater and not Theatre ;)
