I just read on another forum (yes, I do read other forums :) ) that Clive, John and Mick are going to contribute to the ProgAID (http://www.progaid.com) project. Chapeau, messieurs. Very good idea.
Here's the mission statement and a list of involved musicians:
The Prog Rock community coming together to help where we can!
ProgAID was set-up in the wake of the terrible earthquake and Tsunami
disaster that tragically struck on the 26th December 2004. The sheer
destruction and loss of human life was of a scale that shook the world.
We considered what the Progressive Rock community could do, even in a small
way, to help alleviate some of the suffering endured, and help towards the
rebuilding of lives and communities.
We have therefore decided to co-ordinate the recording of a CD single to
help raise as much money as possible for those that need it. The song,
titled 'All Around The World', will be recorded on the 29th and 30th
January 2005, and since the decision was made, we have been overwhelmed by
the generosity of so many great musicians who have agreed to give their
time to appear on the single. The list grows daily and currently includes:

listed within the "Who's Who" section of this site.

Yes, I'd seen that too. I believe the track is going to be an old number of "Cyan's". Goodness knows how they'll involve all those musicians though - although this IS ProgAID so expect the single to be around 25 mins long ;)
There's a saying in Germany that roughly translates 'Too many cooks make a bad meal' ;)
I hope our Arena heroes have a good influence on that behalf!

Thanks for that. I browse Musical Discoveries quite a lot as I'm fond of the female singer/songwriter genre but I have to admit, I'd missed that bit.

I could well imagine buying a whole album not only a single....gives more money to the Tsunami victims...and also more great music for me to listen to than with only a single...

Mine arrived yesterday. The versions are:
1. Single Mix (5.25)
2. Definitive Mix (11.58)
3. Air Mix (5.17)
4. Cue Mix (5.02)
5. Instrumental (5.17)
and a "making of" video.
Not actually played it yet but I'm sure it'll be listenable ;D
It's difficult to be totally objective about something like Progaid because artists have given up their time for free and it's all in a good cause and is thus worthy of support. At the same time though one should try to be honest about the musical content of this offering and my feelings on the product are a little mixed.
First I don't really see the need to put so many versions of the track onto the disk. A standard version, an extended mix and an instrumental would have been more than sufficient. The addition of two further mixes just seems like padding and for me added nothing to the disc.
I also had problems with the video on my disc. It plays OK, but the picture looks to be squashed up - like it was filmed in widescreen and then pushed in at the edges to fit a square frame - and it does not seem possible to adjust the shape of the playback window (at least not with the software supplied).
Finally it has to be said that the song itself is not particularly strong - more pop than prog which was a bit disppointing.
Having said all that, it is great to see so many people supporting such a worthy cause, and I would still urge people to consider placing an order for the disc as it is undoubtedly a nice to have item - just don't expect great prog!
I personally don't have a problem with the number of different mixes...but I do agree that the basic "song" isn't particularly strong. And as such, I don't anticipate it receiving massive radio airplay, especially as The Tsunami Disaster isn't really in the headlines any more.
However, "The Definitive Mix" at 11'58" is a great track, and a real joy to play "spot-the-muso" with...I think that I've spotted Clive's solo, but it might have been Widge wearing his special "Clive Hat"... ;)
Next stop...the video...
Shame that it doesn't cover the 11'58" mix...but then having read the sleeve notes, it appears that a good number of the contributions arrived by post on CD, during the weeks following the initial recording session weekend...i.e. AFTER the video was shot...!
The compression required to fit the data into QuickTime Player format has rather mucked-up the quality, and...
...it has really shown-up the speed and available memory shortcomings of MY PC...
So it looks as if the planned upgrade is imperative now, rather than just a luxury...
Otherwise, for a Fiver, the CD is excellent VFM.
And congratulations to all those that gave up their time (and money) to record and distribute it.
Dear, I love this record. I just unpacked it and gave it a spin. OK, simtere, track 1 is not overly strong, but hey, that one's for the airplay, if they are to get any at all. Track 2 ist just plain beautiful!
And even Track1, now listening to it again.... man, from 3:45 when the sound becomes more and more spherical, the choir jumping in... just cool. I don't know, maybe I'll buy another one or two for mates or so!
