Title: Dream Theater sign with Roadrunner Records! "Systematic Chaos" due 07/06/2007!!!
Post by: The Butterfly Man on Thu, 2007-02-08, 23:11:24
Dream Theater signed a record deal with Roadrunner Records. This, along with the title of the new album, can be read on the forum of Mike Portnoy's website in a message posted by Mike himself. Here's a direct link:

Oooooh I can't wait 'till June when I've got my copy of Systematic Chaos in my hands!

What a year this turns out to be for prog-lovers!  *horns*

Cheers, Tom

Yes, read it today on the VoicesUK official fan club. This is great news indeed.  *horns*

Though i must confess that i was a bit surprised that they signed with Roadrunner Records. Inside Out was my guess. BTW this is not a complaint. Motown would've been okay too.  ;D

As long it's Dream Theater.  *horns*

I like the title. It reminds me of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence that I really loved  :P

I might repeat myself, but I still can't stand to listen to DT more than 10 or 15 minutes in a row. They are real geniusses on their instruments and I find their compositions extremely interesting, but James' voice simply drives me crazy.

"Stop wailing, James, I really didn't steal your purse...."

Too bad :)

Peter, to be honest I have that same feeling when listening to the first few albums. But from "Metropolis Part 2" and onwards I think James' voice made a big improvement.

Personally I love his voice. But I certainly know what you mean. I must confess that I like James' voice on The Human Equation far better!
And still I REALLY like Dream Theater and they're one of my favourite bands!
I'm very excited that they will release another album!! *horns*

The "first song "part 1" last song "part 2" trick", very clever.

The tracks seem very dark.

Enemies, forsaken, dark eternal nights, war, lost souls.

But I can't wait! *horns*

Maybe Arena next year, they've started writing so that's a good thing!

I've got a dilemma.  :-\

On CD-wow the new album can be pre-ordered for only €11.99.   :-\
And although i know that Dream Theater usually has the tendency not to bring out Limited Editions, i just thought 'new record company'...well...maybe... :-\

So...What to do?  ???

Rhetorical question?  ???

Okay...

I will....Buy it.  ;D

Maybe an idea for the rest of you?  ;)

Darn. I just read something on the DPRP news pages:

Quote from: DPRPROADRUNNER RECORDS regret to announce the delay of the new Dream Theater album Systematic Chaos. The album, scheduled for release on June 4th has been postponed due to errors in artwork printing. A&R man Derek Oliver commented: "We regret the postponement of the Dream Theater release due to printing errors in the artwork. The booklets received from the printing factory contained errors that did not pass our high standard quality check, so we had no other choice than to reject the artwork and get it reprinted."
The release date will now be July 23rd.

Systematic Chaos if the first album for the band to be released on Roadrunner records and is the band's ninth album, following the critically acclaimed Octavarium. The album was recorded at Avatar Studios in New York, with veteran engineer/ mixer Paul Northfield (Rush, Queensryche, Porcupine Tree). As usual, Portnoy and Petrucci chose to co-produce the project, which features seven compositions (one a 25-minute epic).

    DREAM THEATER - SYSTEMATIC CHAOS

       1. In The Presence of Enemies Pt.1
       2. Forsaken
       3. Constant Motion
       4. The Dark Eternal Night
       5. Repentance
       6. Prophets of War
       7. The Ministry of Lost Souls
       8. In The Presence of Enemies Pt.2

Produced by John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy
Engineered and Mixed by Paul Northfield

So they postponed the album. Darn.  :(

Bear with me.

I wrote this thingy on the Ayreon forum too after read it on the DPRP pages...

Then on the forum of DPRP someone wrote an interesting thing.

Read what i posted on the Ayreon forum:

Quote from: MeOkay...

A few guys on the DPRP-forum mentioned the word....

Well, just read.

The Flower Kings seems to be working on a new album, which apparently would be their last because the singer Hasse Fröberg wanted to...teach in India and will move after the recording and touring to India. Their drummer Marcus would step in to fill his place but under a new name. The word 'Genesis' emerges. Maybe Roine Stolts own name...

And then this Dream Theater thingy, which i mentioned earlier... :|

Like i said before, a few guys mentioned the word...

APRIL FOOL'S!  :o

I get the feeling, especially since i looked for clues on both The Flower Kings and Dream Theater site,  we have been hoaxed by the guys of DPRP!  :P

Anyone with me?

Well, if they did...

Well done. It worked in my case.  (http://thefamilybiz.org/ezboard/emoticons/lol3.gif)

The more i think about it the more i think: We have been hoaxed by the guys of DPRP-pages.  ;D

Quote from: Mike Portnoy forumDREAM THEATER'S upcoming release "Systematic Chaos" will be released on Tuesday June 5th (date may vary in different countries) and will be available in two formats:

Regular Edition CD:

and a Special Edition CD and DVD:

The Special Edition DVD will include:

--- the entire album mixed in 5.1 surround sound
--- "Chaos in Progress - The Making of Systematic Chaos"
(a 90-minute documentary directed by Mike Portnoy)

The CD's track listing for both editions is:
1. In The Presence of Enemies Pt.1 (9:00)
2. Forsaken (5:36)
3. Constant Motion (6:55)
4. The Dark Eternal Night (8:51)
5. Repentance (10:43)
6. Prophets Of War (6:01)
7. The Ministry of Lost Souls (14:57)
8. In The Presence of Enemies Pt.2 (16:38)

The band will shoot a video next week for the first single off the album, "Constant Motion".

This sounds interesting.  8)
I sure hope the special edition will be released in Europe as well. There is a link to a Japanese site but that seems a bit far away.  :-\

And no, it doesn't seems to be a April Fools joke to me. :D

Finally Dream Theater comes up with special editions.

But why is the traffic light upside down?
And for some reason I begin to see that there are a lot special edition that are in fact not that great.
The entire album in 5.1 surround and a 90-minute documentary... Hmmm...
It will probably (just like PT's latest) cost two times the regular edition. :(

I fear you might be right on that one, PH. It probably will cost more.

That's the Japanese link i talked about. They seem to be the first one where you can pre-order it but that doesn't mean it'll be the only one. I'm sure the rest of the horde will follow.  ;D

Oh, and that traffic light thingy? That's the chaos reference i guess. ;)

Hey guys, please don't discuss any of the album's content until it's officially released. There are people (like me) who like to read discussions on how the album may sound, not on how it does sound! I plan to buy it on the releasedate, and don't want to download it (or shall I call that 'obtaining a promo copy'? ;)) prior to that date, so everything will be new for me.

Thanks!

Sure! Fair enough!

Just one thing I want to say:

Spoiler:
What is Dream Theater doing?? It seems as if they're turning into something religious. Ministry Of Souls anyone? Brilliant album by the way!
Spoiler ends here.

There seems to be lot of expertise on Dream Theater here in the Room. As I'm somewhat, but not very, familiar with DT, I'd like to tap some of that expertise. Therefore I'd like you guys to comment on the following three questions:

Why is Dream Theater widely considered to be the flagship of prog?
Where do you find the best of DT, and why?
In what ways has DT changed your life?

I had the same experience as Peter, that I just couldn't get gripped by LaBrie's vocals, until I heard Six Degrees, where he had really upped himself and gained a lot of expression. Six Degrees reawakened my passion for Dream Theater. So now I'm getting into the later stuff and looking very much forward to Systematic Chaos (and I've decided to get Score too, when I strike upon the much sought for goldmine).

Nicky.

Good joke, Maddox, and you're right: If you have so much talent, nothing can stop it. Even if you had Heintje on the vocals, Dream Theater would be great.

You know what, Tom? You're absolutely right and i apologies for that. It wasn't really thoughtful of me.  I remember some time ago just when Pain Of Salvation's Scarsick would be released, there were a lot of reviewers on the DPRP-forum who said how good or how bad the album was and there i was, sitting behind the screen and never heard a single note of that album. That made me...yes i must confess: a bit irritated. No offence to those guys, but i had to wait a whole month more to hear it. That's the fortunes of being a reviewer. You get to hear the albums way sooner that the mere mortal.  ;)

I must add that having this 'promo' copy doesn't change a thing for me. I still have both editions on pre-order and am curious about the rest of the package too. You know, the artwork, the lyrics (which i always find very interesting since i write a few lines myself  ;)) etc etc.
I'm a bit of a fan, you know.  :D

So like i said earlier: My excuses.  ;)

I agree with you on that one, Nicky. After Awake and before Metropolis pt II: Scenes From A Memory, James' voice wasn't all to good. Especially live he was sometimes aweful, on Five Years In A Lifetime for instance. Dreadful i must say. I've got some official bootlegs from Ytsejam records and the ones that were recorded between the two albums i've mentioned earlier are really not so great. And with that i mean the vocals. It's extremely great how they control their instruments, very virtuosity to say the least but to me James was always the weakest link in the band. Until SFAM and further on. He gained a lot of power since then and his voice isn't 'tired' any more at the end of the tour.
I've seen Dream Theater six times until now and trust me, it's better than before.

Why is Dream Theater the flagship of prog? Well not entirely prog by it's definition. Personally i consider them prog/metal though they have there tender moments too.  ;)
Maybe because of their musician skills. They never limit their self to any boundary and are constantly searching for new ideas and tunes. Yes, every musician does or should do that but the way they do it, makes my neck skin crawl and with that i mean on a positive way.

The best of DT in my opinion can be found in tracks like A Mind Besides Itself, A Change Of Seasons and Octavarium. Yes, pretty long numbers but it suits them.
By the way, i consider Metropolis Pt I as their best song ever made.  ;)

So, and now a cup of coffee.  ;D

Well it did change my perspective of music. When Images & Words was released back in '91 i heard it in the local recordstore, Staphorst in Utrecht btw  ;).
When i heard the first tunes of Pull Me Under i was literally blown from my chair. This was Amazing.  :o I was quite a metal head back then, listened to Marillion and PF too but the more guitars the better, but after that...

It really was my defining moment in music.  *horns*

OK, Maddox, now I got my hot steaming coffee (and it really is damn good), and I had the leisure to read your post on DT.

Thanks a lot for your comments. You seem to be the DT expert here. (I'm hoping to provoke some others into action.)

I'll keep your fave tracks in mind.

I think too that it was good that the DT fans were patient with LaBrie. Six Degrees is really growing on me, and LaBrie's vocals too. I think, for a lot of us today, DT wouldn't sound right without him.

So, I guess God has a purpose with all of us (although what his purpose is with me is still a mystery to me).

> Hmm, that should be in the 'Now Eating/Drinking thread.

I thought you meant that DT and a good cup of coffee belonged together.

Yeah, I forgot one too:

> Why is Dream Theater the flagship of prog? Well not entirely prog by it's definition. Personally i consider them prog/metal though they have there tender moments too.

It seems that we have different perceptions of "prog". I take the word literally, that a prog group is continually progressing, experimenting, including new genres, elements. So, in my use of the word, DT is very much prog, just as Arena, Zero Hour, Spock's Beard, and just as Fish-era Marillion were (today, they're more like: asleep. Sorry, Marillion fans).

I don't know what has become of me. I've had the first CD of Six Degrees on repeat the whole day. It just becomes better and better. This has only happened to me in recent times with Contagion and Fullness of Time. Six Degrees is an absurdly good album. I had also read in several reviews that it was a difficult album to get into, but once it took hold of you, it wouldn't let you go.

Yeah, bring on The Glass Prison! It ROCKS!!! *horns* *horns* *horns*
The instrumental middle part of Blind Faith is just breathtaking!
Misunderstood is a great tune. The only thing with it is, I'm still unsure what to think of the ending 'noises'.
The Great Debate might be my favourite of disc 1!
Disappear is so hauntingly beautiful!

I think I'll just have to listen to it.........NOW!  ;D *horns*

??? You just read in my mind, didn't you ?

I consider SDOIT as DT's second masterpiece besides I&W. Both are much better than SFAM for my taste (but I am not a metal fan so it could explain my choices). I really don't understand why people say that SDOIT is too metallic or to difficult to get into  ??? Maybe it's because of the word turbulence in the title ? Or maybe they just listened to The Glass Prison (which is great metal song, anyway) ?

Bupie, you may have had a special propensity for it, but I've heard from many sides that Six Degrees is a very difficult album to get into. And I think it's very deliberate on DT's side, taking their role as prog flagship seriously.

Six Degrees and Fullness of Time are the two albums in recent times that have taken most effort for me to get into. Only after about 5-6 listens, did I begin to really enjoy them. But then in both cases I also became a junkie.

You're not a metalfan, so don't you enjoy disc 2 more than disc 1? Yeah I'm just curious, 'cause it seems that all the prog-lovers like disc 2 better, and the metalheads seem to prefer disc 1.

About SFAM, are you sure we listened to the same album? I think SFAM is much more symphonic than Six Degrees (well, especially disc 1). I'm a DT-fan since SFAM, and back in those days I wasn't really into metal, so it says a lot that I liked (and still like!) it so much. Over the last few years I developed a slight preference to the metal-element in prog, and I think that's because of DT...

No, frankly I enjoy both discs equally and I think that the two metal songs on disc 2 (sorry but for me SDOIT, "the song", is not one song but a collection of different songs), WIMH and TTTSTA, are more heavy than TGP on disc 1. And disc 1 has Blind Faith that is an absolute favorite of mine.

Yes I am sure. I like it very much too, of course, but I find some instrumental passages overlong. Home, for instance, could be four minutes shorter. And the metal intro of Beyond this Life is really not my cup of tea. This kind of unmelodic metal -at least to my ears- is the only thing that I dislike in DT. Examples in other albums are Scarred, Lie, The Mirror, Burning my Soul, Let me Breathe, Honor thy Father, This Dying Soul. And I find the 19' version of Beyond this Life on LAB almost unlistenable ...

On the other hand, I feel fine with TGP, TROAE, As I Am, Never Enough or SoC. I guess it is because, although those songs are heavy too, their melody hooks me (for SoC, I'm sure : I am addicted to it  :D). But there is not a rational explanation to everything ...

Too bad :)

A German, who has humor. Wow!  :D

The captain thinks La Brie is cheezy.

Well, objectively I would not consider him (LaBrie, that is) one of the greatest singers (that would be Rob Sowden, Mac, Chris Cornell, Ray Alder, and a few more), but he (still LaBrie) really belongs to the DT-sound, and I would fight to death to keep him there.

Hey, I just got an idea for a new topic. Wait and see. I think that this will bring him (the captain this time) down from the command post for a moment.

I haven't yet met a woman who enjoys Six Degrees and the following DT-albums. They don't seem to be in the Room either, or?

And living in the French countryside probably adds to the solitary experience.

Arena are more easily appreciated, which however doesn't make them less prog.

First my boyfriend was in his solitary shell listening to them, but I join quite fast! Without any regrets ! ;D ;)

I can't wait to be on Friday night at Esch to seem them on stage (with Riverside as guest, it will be a terribly good evening for me!)

Speaking of "Systematic Chaos", I have some difficulty to hear "Dark Eternal Night", but I'm listening with pleasure all the rest!!!!  *horns* Less "commercial" than Octovarium... more metal  *horns*.

For now my favourite is Forsaken, but I also like Constant Motion a lot, as well as In the Presences of Ennemies... well and all the album except that N°4 song!  ;D

Typical: They're playing in Stockholm, Oslo, Helsinki, even Warsaw, and I don't know how many places in England and Germany; and where are they not playing: Copenhagen, of course. It's as if you had a map of Europe, where there was light all over the place, and a black splotch between Germany and Sweden. I can only say one thing: Good grief.

Cap, you can send all your lederhosen-bands to Denmark instead.

Guess I'll have to catch an X2000 to Stockholm. Fortunately it's summer.

I was not owherwelmed by the first listens but now the album is (strongly) growing on me : my favorite so far are ITPOTE part 1 and Prophets of War (my 8 and 4 years old kids like this one too) but I know by experience that this is prone to frequent turnover. No real bad song overall IMHO.

And only 5 days left before the Clermont-Ferrand gig !!!  ;D

I took a quick look at the different setlists since the beginning of this european leg and only three songs of SC are played : Constant Motion, TDEN and Forsaken.

I guess they will play more of the new album when they return in autumn. Maybe tuesday I will have the pleasure to listen to the entire I&W since it seems that they played it a few times on this leg.

I will tell you that next wednesday (or a little bit later if I need time to recover  ;))

Thanks for sharing your experience with us, Bupie. Sounds like it was a great concert. Makes me look even more forward to their gig in Stockholm, September 28.

One of the things I like about DT is that they prefer to play in moderately sized concert halls. With their current fan base, they could play the big places.

I've been wondering about, what's Jamie like as frontman? What are the audience like (age, hair, dress, etc)?

Finally listening to SC, Forsaken and The Ministry Of Lost Souls.......How can a band that write and perform songs of this quality be anything other than the biggest band on the planet (Other than Arena). The rest of it could take a few more listens to really "stick" but those 2 tracks.....up there with the best.

 *horns* John

You know, what's weird is that the whole damn album is fantastic from beginning to end, probably the best DT-album.

I thought I'd go mad listening to it. Well, that fortunately didn't happen, but I know I'll go mad with the next one.

Nicky.

This may come as a shock to some of you (Nicky?;)) but after a couple of months of listening to SC, I don't think it is their best album. Don't ask me why but I think I like Scenes From A Memory and Six Degrees (especially disc 2) just a little bit more. Don't get me wrong, there are lots of great tunes on SC but I think I prefer the overal 'feel' of the aforementioned albums. However, if you would ask what my favourite DT-song is, I would say.....................................In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 1 and 2 combined). Strange eh? :D

Tom

btw, I'm in a metal-mood so I'm listening to The Dark Eternal Night right now *horns*.

Seems as if I have lot to catch up on... I haven't got any of DT's later albums because obviously I'm not one of those experts Nicky was looking for!  ;)

Quite fun, especially for you, Paco (from Wikipedia, on Octavarium):

Many fans have made observations about the recurrances of 5s and 8s in the album art, possibly a reference to the Golden ratio, very common in art throughout history and in Nature itself. The name Octavarium itself has 5 syllables, while connotating 8. The use of 5s and 8s stems from the number of natural notes (white keys on a piano) and black keys (sharp/flat notes) in an octave. It may also refer to the number of members in the band from its inception in 1985 to 2005, Octavarium being the band's 8th studio album, and the subsequent "Score" being their fifth live album.

Several of the 5 and 8 references in the album are:

1.   This is their 8th album and they have released 5 live DVDs.
2.   The cover and back cover show a Newton's Cradle with eight pendulums, and five birds in between them, arranged in the same pattern as black piano keys. (The black birds represent flats and sharps and the balls of the pendulum represent the natural notes.)
3.   On the spine of the album there are piano keys in an octave.
4.   On the page 5 of the booklet, there are two dominoes summing up to 5 and 8.
5.   On the page 7 of the booklet, there is a spider (which has eight legs) trapped inside an octagon-shaped maze. The maze is made of five layers and has eight doorways amongst the layers, and eight walls that form "dead ends".
6.   On the page 11 of the booklet, there is an octopus (which has eight legs), five fish and an octagonal stop sign.
7.   On the page 13 of the booklet, there is a plant in which a five-pointed star was drawn inside an octagon. The scale of the plant is stated to be 5:8.
8.   On the insides of the the front and back covers of the booklet, there are two pictures of the same boy holding two ends of a can telephone. First picture is accompanied by 8 lines of capitalized text (track titles). Second picture is accompanied by 5 lines (band members' names).
9.   The boy has 5 fingers showing in one picture, and the other picture only has 3 fingers showing.. adds up to eight.
10.  The booklet itself has eight pages, if left and right pages are considered to be a single page.
11.  On the inlay of the album, there is a billiards eight-ball.
12.  The title track (Octavarium) comprises five movements.

Also, the star in the octagon has musical keys written around it that go in a circle of fifths.

The Newton's Cradle on the cover and the musical hooks connecting all the songs together lyrically and melodically have also given rise to the theory that the entire album is intended to be a concept album portraying continuity.
