Title: Jimi Hendrix
Post by: Nicky007 on Thu, 2009-07-30, 16:37:42
I'v long been wondering why Roomies don't listen to Hendrix - actually only Draco does. Roomies are all over the place musically, but just not into Hendrix, altho he was one of the most popular rock musicians at the time.

As for me, Hendrix was big when I was a kid. My brother played him occasionally, and I had a coupl'o friends who were into him, but his music never really gripped me, and when I recently heard some of his stuff that is considered by his fans to be classic, it still didnt turn me on.

So what's all this hype about Hendrix  ???

Any of you guys been into him ?

Nicky.

Never listened to him.
And again, I recognise his importance in music, but somehow I never had the urge to get to know him better.

His music is often more hard-rock and blues than progressive, although there are some psychedelic touches too.

Funny thing about Hendrix is that if he wouldn't have died, he would be the guitarist of Emmerson Lake and Palmer. Which would be Hendrix, Emmerson, Lake and Palmer. Or HELP.  :D

I consider him as a gifted guitarist, though i don't really like his style.

I'll get back on this.

Must rush rush...

I like Jimi.  I'm pretty sure Electric Ladyland has appeared under my name on "Now Playing" at least once in the past few months.  I think he was one of the early guitar geniuses, and he sure wasn't wimpy. I do often find that a few songs at at time are enough though.  The era being what it was, he gets rather psychedelic at times, which can lead to some "proto-noodling."   ;D

It's good to actually listen to unknown music, Paxi. Not that I expect you to get turned on by Hendrix's stuff, but it would give you a bit of a feel of what it's all about. Reading and otherwise informing oneself about stuff is of course beneficial too, but it's only the one side of the coin.

Many of my prejudices have been confounded when I actually got down to listening (in) to stuff  ;)

Do like Jonesy:  Listen to everybody and his brother. If you can't afford to buy stuff, then use MySpace, YouTube, friends, and libraries; one can get real far that way. Thus you can convince yourself and others that you'v really been around  8)

I might not always agree with Jonesy's takes, but at least I know he's made a serious effort  :)

I know, Paxi, kids your age are impulsive and on/offish. (Ms 007's sons are 25, 27, and 29, and I'v known'm for seven years.) Here in the Room ya got a chance to mature a bit faster  :)

I know. And I actually do. I thought you would know by now. ::)

You can say whatever you like, but I'm not impulsive! :D
But there's so much good stuff going on in Music Land. I've listened to a lot of music and there's only 24 hours in one day, you know...

And I said I never listened to him, but actually I HAVE heard Jimi Hendrix songs, not quite liked it at that time (was around the time I began to explore Pink Floyd's stuff, which I liked far better). You have the advantage of having heard a lot of music in your life. I'm a few years younger, so... ;)

Eventually I'll dig deeper into the old stuff, I'm on my way already, having heard several PFM and Banco albums (so in a way, I'm even ahead of YOU, Nicky...))

Besides all this, I often get the feeling that I have to defend myself. And to be honest, I don't always like that feeling. ;)

I'm a bit of a Hendrix fan, even though he died about a year before I first got into music :o

I'm pretty sure I've posted the odd Hendrix item in the 'Now Playing' thread,  the Radio One Sessions CD rings a recent bell for starters.

I suspect, like many, my Hendrix collection has enjoyed a new lease of life in recent years after the A-W-E-S-O-M-E use of 'All Along the Watchtower' in Battlestar Galctica.  I don't know quite why, but that worked soooooooooooo well it was untrue! 8)

Fear not, Paco, we all know you are a fine young man.  If you were constantly in agreement with Nicky, then we'd worry.   ;)

Great use, indeed. I like the song "Heeding The Call" too, i consider it as a kind of introduction to this new version of All Along The Watchtower (wich is my favourite one).

About the Dead God, I think he was more looking for guitaristic perfomance than for melody and harmony, as prog rock bands do.
I used to love his song Voodo Child, but I find his [Slight Return] version of it, which last 6 or 7 minutes, a little bit too long.
It's a 6 minutes solo guitar, and in the end, you don't really know where you've started from. Some prog songs are also long, with very different melodies, but it's easier to know where you are in the songs, thanks to the main theme, etc.
For instance, it is easy to recognize each part of Anesthetize, because each one has a different ambiance : the first part, quite psychedelic, the second one is heavier, and the last one is calm.
A song of Jimi Hendrix is, in fact, quite a mess, as it is (almost) completely improvised.
I find these different kinds of music great, in different ways.

Do you think it could be an explanation?

Nicely expressed, Draco, especially considering that you'r a teenager, and French  :)

Yes, I do think so  :)

In fact, sometimes when listening to him I felt like I was sharing his bad heroin trip  :(
