Years ago i bought one album of theirs mostly because it was cheap (mind you, i'm Dutch ;)), called Frances The Mute.
To be quite honest yet in a mild note: I didn't liked it.
Now, this is troubling me for some time: Am i missing the big picture? Is there something about the Mars Volta that i simply don't understand?
I ask this because lots of people seem to like this band. :-\
Any thoughts?
Ideas?
Anyone?
They're a bit intense, to put it mildly, and are unlikely to be everyone's cup of tea. When Frances came out I was into them BIG TIME but my enthusiasm dwindled after a while. Nowadays I can sometimes listen to an album and enjoy it hugely, but more often than not I'm simply not in the mood.
I've been curious about them as well. They get frequent mention in various prog articles and reviews, but I've never heard a single song of theirs.
I was deeply into the Volta a couple of years ago - they were virtually my fave band for several months - but I havent listened much to'm during the past two years. That's not cause they didnt have more to offer, but cause metalworld opened up to me, and there were simply sooo many bands .....
MV are definitely a band to reckon with, and as Mad already noted, they'v been highly influential in progworld. Frances is certainly a classic by now, and I'd say, an album that belongs in a proper prog collection.
I enjoyed De-Loused a lot too ;)
Man, all that craziness ::)
But OK, Mad, I'l get into'm soon again .....
Nicky.
Heard De-Loused at a friend's place, but it was too much for me, 'specially the vocals. They're good I think, but it's not my cup of tea. The reviews I've read of the following albums gave me the impression they got ever harder to listen to (except maybe their latest one) and did not make me want to try again..

+ 1.
Except for the fact that i don't think they're good.
Devin can be hard, Mars V. is just brutal! :o :o :o

Frankly, I think you can't compare them. Their styles are soooo much different.

I agree.
I only was referring to the problems i have with both of them. ;)
Once again, this is complex music that requires several listens before one can make any responsible statement about it ;)
Remember, guys: We're proggies *horns*
And MV sure are worthwhile. I reckon I'v played De-Loused and Frances both over fifty times - and I'l probably end up playin'm at least fifty times more 8)
Nicky.

Oh, believe me Nicky: i did.
Several times.
Still.....it's not worth my attention. ;)
