What other bands do they sound close to ? (if it's a correct question, grammatically :-X)

At times, especially on their first album, they sound like leftovers from the "Images and words" sessions. At times even like the songs that were actually on "Images and words".

Go figure. I know the keyboard player. He grew up where I live, and we almost wrote a song together once! :D

Good band, but you will have to deal with the obvious DT inspirations with more grace than I can muster. (I am notorious for my worship of early DT while having big problems with anything that sounds like it... another go figure moment...)

I believe they've developed beyond that since, and I know that the production is stellar. It is fairly melodic, but more prog-music based than song based if you ask me.

Listening to some of their stuff on Youtube and i hve to say i am well impressed

Better than DT in my opinion  :-[

That whole prog/power metal thing is really floating my boat at the moment so any other recommendations would be great

Funkster, if you want some highly complex prog metal, and if you're willing to make the necessary effort to get into it, I consider Nevermore to be the musically most exciting group at the moment. I have to warn you tho: Their lyrics are very dark, at times bordering on nihilism. They seem to convey the message that mankind has junked the possibility of making this planet a good place - altho in some of their lyrics they pick up on Christian and other religious texts that promise us some relief and improvement of sorts. Quite a challenge to us Christians  ::)

But musically I consider Nevermore the best. They're the ones I return to when I need to raise my spirit, and rise above all the junk around me - strange, huh ?  ;D :)

All of their official studio albums are terrific, altho the first self-titled is maybe not quite up to the standards of the following albums.

Would be interesting to have a discussion on this extraordinary, in all ways over-the-top, group here in the Room  ;)

Nicky.

I don't yet have any faves among the Nevermore albums, except that, as mentioned, the first self-titled album isnt quite as satisfying as the following; but if you get This Godless Endeavor, you'l be sharing with Steve and me, and maybe Iggy by now - which is niiice  :)

Curious to hear your take on'm - but only after several listens, please  :-X

Pagan's Mind Best work is Celestial Entrance, especially with the single: Through Osiris's eyes. Their sound is nice joint between Dream Theater and Symphony X. His Vocal is truly amazing.

I am listening to Celestial Entrance now and loving it  ;D

What an amazing album - DT meets Queensryche but better than both  *horns*

The only album i have of Pagan's Mind is God's equation, which indeed is an excellent prog-metal album.
The only thing that's bothering me are the vocals.  :-\

But musically it's okay.  8)

PM are great, but don't lose your sense of proportion, Funkster:  DT and Q are in the top league of progmetal  ;)

That's like comparing Mozart with Beethoven (right, Matt?), or Gordon Brown with Tony Blair.

Nicky , Nicky , Nicky , poor old Nicky - where to start ?

DT are just too widdly widdly for my ears and the Q have gone downhill rapidly since rage for order and OM

Pagan Mind to my ears take the best bits of both bands and make something better

But what the hell do i know eh ?

Prog metal - where have you been all my life  ;)

You probably mean OM I, Funkster.

Yeah, I know what you mean. The progmetal adventure has several stages.

Some people say "Art is a matter of taste, and taste can't be discussed." Imo this a cliché of the ignorant.

I think that if one is passionate about progmetal, one naturally ends up experiencing some bands as good, some as talented, some as extraordinary, and some as unfathomable  ;)
