Title: Good Italian prog groups
Post by: Nicky007 on Wed, 2007-06-20, 12:39:31
I have very little experience with Italian prog groups. I haven't yet heard anything that's impressed me, but from what I hear and read, there should be some good Italian stuff around.

Anyone have recoms?

Nicky.

Lacuna Coil is on of the more famous ones.

I don't know either, but Mind Key seems to be quite popular.
Or Moongarden perhaps...?

And of course the Genesis-clone The Watch, which is great!

Hey, you guys are just guessing. I know those names too. I'd like some experiences.

 ;D
There are a lot of new experiences for you!
The bands listed there are called Italian Symphonic Prog. It's basically just Symphonic Prog like early Genesis, Yes etc. etc. but... err... its Italian...?
Most of the time they sing in Italian. There are hundreds if not thousands, if not ten-thousands of Italian Symphonic Prog fans and they all claim that Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM for short) is the best band in its genre.
I've listened to it, and it's quite good indeed. Actually (when I listen to it now, at this very moment) it's better than I thought before.

Well, you asked for recomendations, so I said Lacuna Coil. Then it's up to you to listen to it ;)

And I said The Watch, but I don't listen much to Italian bands. I think The Watch is the only Italian band I listened to.
At first I though that Clepsydra was Italian, but it isn't. They're from Switzerland. But from the Italian part of Switzerland, because the singer also sings little bits in Italian. Most of it is in English though.
I recommend Clepsydra VERY MUCH!
http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=361
Listen to these songs on there.
It's very much Arena-ish.

And thanks to this thread I'm listening to all the songs of PFM on Progarchives. It's actually very very very very good.
Very 70's Genesis, but you can't call them a clone, because they started in the same year as Genesis (1969).

Or what to think of "Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso"?
Another band I just (10 minutes ago) discovered.
It gets very high ratings on ProgArchives.

It sounds very good too. Hmm I myself need to delve deeper into the mine that is Italian Symphonic Prog.
The next band I'm going to listen to will be Le Orme, it's another of those classics, so it seems.

Well, further down the page under where it says "Adds by Google" there are 68 mp3 clips from italian bands, you could perhaps listen to them ALL, come back and tell us all about them to save us the bother........Ok, Ok I'm pushing my luck.

IMHO The Watch are probably the best of the italian prog bands, well worth a listen Here (http://www.thewatchmusic.net/mellotron_snippets.php)

Of course so long as you don't have a head ache Symphony X take some beating but I think you know that already!

PH, if you like the tracks on progarchives you should buy an album of theirs if you haven't done so already...I was very happy a couple of months ago when I found the album 'Alone' in a cd-store...that album is higly recommended!! Too bad Clepsydra doesn't exist anymore. :-\

Hi Tom, yes I know... Too bad...
And about half a year ago I saw on progwereld.org that they were recording an album... but a couple of months later I read somewhere else that they disbanded.

I want to buy two or three albums by them (I've some on MP3 already... So I know what I'm talking about.) but I don't know where, 'cause most of the internetstores want a creditcard, and I don't have one... Begging my dad is getting very annoying... ;D
But probably I can give my order to a local prog store in my town and they will get it for me. It's on my wishlist (Fear and Alone anyway!).

I don't use snippets much, John, and certainly not as a primary source. I mainly rely on recoms by people I know, particularly if I've noticed a concurrence in taste.

One only really gets to know an album by hearing it fully several times on a good music set.

But those snippets are new age music. You call The Watch a prog group?

I don't get it, John.

I actually have Comalies, Appelmoes. It didn't impress me on first listening, but I'll give it another try shortly.

It's nice and melodious, but sounds to me more like Julio Iglesias than prog. Not really original. It also bothers me that it's so hard to catch the words.

Hm, not doin so well with the Italian prog. Think I'll go out into the kitchen and make a bowl of good Italian spaghetti with tomato sauce, fresh basil, and lots of garlic instead (cheese sucks). Just realised I'm hungry. See you on the "Now eating" thread.

Maddox, this sounds like Dark Side Of The Moon, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

It's good that the medical system hasn't (yet) defined progosis.

In Sweden, a young man has recently been granted part pension by the state because his heavy metal needs have become extreme.

You know, Appelmoes, I just gave Comalies another go, but I couldn't even get through the album, it's simply too boring. It's not prog, more like heavy gothic - with lots of mannerisms. The voices are nice, but that don't do it for me. Guess if one smoked a j* ....

Hi PH, maybe you want to try out this store BTF.IT http://www.btf.it/ (http://www.btf.it/). Beside Credit Card they also except Banktransfer, but you will have to ask for that option via Email.

Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso is indeed a nice Italian band, I would recommend Premiata Forneria Marconi too. Especially the album "Per Un Amico". Which is great.

The Watch is awesome too. "Vacuum" is the best I think.

I've heard good things about Mangala Vallis and Metamorfosi. I'll check them out.

Nicky007, will you do the same? ;)

First time i heard The Watch i was amazed. I actually thought i was listening to an old Genesis song or that Peter Gabriel wrote some songs with Genesis in the back of his head.
I still frequently play it but i must confess if i play it too often i'm begin to dislike it.

Vacuum is indeed their best but i haven't heard the last album yet so...My vote probably won't count here.  ;)

What i meant was that since i don't owe the last album my vote might be considered as useless.  ;) Just a joke, nothing more.

Thanks for the compliment btw. Muchly appreciated.  ;D

"Taproban" of course!

They're also amazing! Nice keyboard orientated band!
