Title: Pendragon
Post by: Mark Jan on Tue, 2005-02-08, 17:02:31
Pendragon is coming with a new album! That's sound very interesting!  ;D Does anyone know when it will be released? I tried the site toffrecords.com today for more information but Internet explorer could'nt find it. Nick has finished writing, I read one or two months ago and they were about to enter the studio.

The only album I know is Not of this world, a very good album!!! And I'm very interested in exploring their older stuff. What would you recommend? I always read that The Masquerade Overture is a very good album. But I think The World also is very interesting piece of music!

As for which is the best album, it's really a matter of personal choice.

That said I would be tempted to go for the more recent albums first, and if you currently are familiar with "Not of This World", my suggestion would be to try either "Masquerade" or "Window of Life" next.

I'm sure there will be plenty of opinions to the contrary, but just remember there is no wrong or right in this.

Happy listening :)

You're right!  ;D No one have the wisdom to say what's the best album, but if many people say you definitely got to listen Masquerade Overture or Window of Life, I know what I have to do!!  ;)

Thanks for your information.  :)

Having all the Pendragon back catalogue, I'd have to say that the early stuff sounds really dated now and quite poor in sound quality.

"The World" is a personal favourite but played back to back with the follow up "Window of Life" the difference in sound quality is staggering  :o , they should either give it a remaster or re-record it as it's a great album spoilt by a really flat and uninspiring sound.

From "Window of Life" onwards you can't go wrong really, if you enjoy one you'll enjoy them all  ;D

About time they did a new album too - haven't heard anything about it yet.

I just saw that Window of Live is the album with The Walls of Babylon! A great song I heard a couple of times with a great organ-intro. Must be Clive!  ;D Ok, I'll focus on The Window of Live and The Masquarade Overture.

From their old album I know The Black Knight. Very good song, but yes, it sounds a bit dated.

And I've heard quite a few in my time  ;)

There is always plenty of gossip on the forum there also!!!

It's all a matter of taste...... I adore Masquerade Overture.......NOTW has to be my fav tho...... or The World........ oh I dunno, depends on mood!

In my personal view, "The World"(1991) is the best effort of PENDRAGON. This CD is at the origin of the substantial growth in group's listeners. It's a key album in Pendragon's career, which wonderfully gathers rock and subtile and so attractive melodies appearing to become the undeniable signature of this band's marvellous music. Just try to listen to such brilliant tracks as "The Voyager" and "Queen Of Hearts" and you' ll have to agree with me! Moreover, Nick Barrett himself picks out "The World" . Don't get me wrong anyhow. All of followers are very, very good too. Highly recommended. :-*

I'd agree with all that. The only point I'd make is that sound quality wise it's considerably poorer than the follow-up "Window of Life" and the later albums and could do with remastering.

You're right, Moonloop - the sound quality of "The World" is rather poor. It's a pity... What else? Some more information for Mark Jan and the others, who don't know yet. Recently Pendragon's website has come to http://www.pendragon.mu/( new album should be called "Believe" and Nick hopes that it will be ready around mid 2005). Let's be patient.

I can wait for some months. For new studioalbums Pendragon always takes a lot of time. But the results are very good. Personally I think that they compensate it with too much other releases, like livealbums, best off's, bootlegs and so on. I don't need them all.

You know, I really can't get into this  :( . It's odd, because although I love the music, the DVD bores me rigid  :o Not sure why, but it doesn't hold my attention like the CDs do.

Â There are some news update on the Pendragon website. CD"Believe" is tentatively slated for release in August 2005. Nick and Clive are working hard on remastering "The Jewel" which will include a couple of re-recorded bonus tracks(Insomnia, Armageddon). In addition, Nick Barrett talks about his involvement with the ProgAID single.

This is a copy of the news letter that was sent out by the Pendragon mailing list..........

er...Hi everybody,

Nick here from Pendrags

unfortunately we have hit a major setback.....the proposed ltd edition of
Believe with DVD has had to be completely shelved due to some pretty serious
production problems

It's to do with editing in the wrong format, which makes it look ok on
computer screen but when you play it on a TV it judders and makes it really
hard to watch. Then on top of that you can't play it in NTSC countries...and
even if you could the quality we are told would be further downgraded when
transferred  to NTSC format.
By last Friday afternoon the whole thing was looking like one big liability
which is a massive shame because Andy [....a ..former mate of mine]  and I
have put in loads of 2.30am finishes to get it done.

We are now looking into other ways of making it available, for example ,
making it downloadable free from our website. Fact is it just won't be upto
DVD production, but it's dead interesting so we'd like you all to see it.

We're all a bit shell shocked here, and pretty down about it, but the
Believe album is still on course  for Aug 29th release and we're confident
it is a good enough album it its own right!

Andy and I have more or less made up now......ggrrrrrr

lots of love

And this is a problem why exactly????   So far I cannot play the majority of home grown bands DVDs as they all favour the NTSC format which does not work on UK TVs (and this includes the last Pendragon which I feel I wasted money on)!!!  OK, so most newer TVs may do the conversion but I only bought mine a few years back and cannot afford an upgrade, so I have to do without - and I don't believe I am the only one in this situation!  You're a UK band - try pandering to the UK audience just ONCE in a while pleeeeease!!

...... and YES ... this IS sour grapes!!!   :)

You can watch it on Your computer I suppose? Or maybe buy a DVD player which can read it and change it into PAL. Yes We have PAL in the Netherlands as well, just a bunch of stupid americans use NTSC. We once got a videotape in NTSC format (years ago) from American friends, but the videorecorder only said I can't read it, read it Yourself. So I know the problem, only the computer doesn't care.

True, I could.  But the fact is I should not have to!  And I don't really see the family gathering around my laptop PC asa viable alternatibe to seeing a DVD on a 32inch TV screen with surround sound!  Neither my TV or DVD are old enough to warrant replacing this early in their lives.

It's not just Pendragon either, it's getting more and more common to release DVDs with Region 0 but then idiotically have them only play in NTSC format.    Surely it's times bands realised there is life in the rest of the world aside from the Americas, and once in a while it would be nice to see us getting some benefits even if they miss out.  Currently everything seems geared towards pleasing the US audiences, and if they have to miss out then we do to!  While I would not condone it, this attitude is only likely to spread the copying of DVDs as people will not want to continually pay money on goods they cannot watch satisfactorily.

Title: Re: Pendragon
Post by: Clive on Tue, 2005-08-09, 16:15:00
I think something that has to made clear is that the 'PAL' version of this DVD was not working properly.... there had been a bunch of problems in the editing and formatting at various stages, and time had run out. Every effort was made, but the deadline just beat us, and we would rather make sure the album comes out on time... after all, this is about the music... everything else is, as they say, a 'bonus'.  :)
The plan is to finish the documentary and make it available to everyone... still free of charge. I think the plan is to make it into small downloadable chunks for the web site.
If the PAL version had worked properly, I'm sure we would have produced a 'European Special Version', but that wasn't possible.... Not for want of every effort, believe me!
Title: Re: Pendragon
Post by: creme anglais on Tue, 2005-08-09, 17:31:24
the Pal/NTSC argument can run and run, but the fact is that 90% of the worlds DVD players will play NTSC, where as about 40% world wide will play PAL........... so if you are going to bring out a DVD you have to kind of go with the most popular format.
YES, it must be really annoying if you are in the 10% that does not play NTSC, but for bands like Pendragon to release a DVD I assume they have to chose the most viable option. Its not "pandering" to the US audience, its good business sense I should think.
It would be great if all the technology world wife was in sync, but that is not the case, those of you how are missing out are not being picked on!

I guess I am lucky that my dvd player reads either format, but I think more and more will read both types, and whilst you might not be ready to upgrade right now, there will be a whole heap of stuff to watch when you do!!! ;)

OK .... that's fair enough.  I guess I had not read the original notice carefully enough before launching my "wobbly" on the fourm.  I stand corrected and appreciate the feedback Clive.

I'd also agree with the poster who stated that this argument could run and run - it could indeed but I for one won't push it any further.  I would like to say in closing however that I do still think it is important that we register our displeasure over such things as sometimes bands are  aware of the problems the fans are having and if we fail to speak up we cannot complain that no one listens.  I think Clive listened and made some valid responses to my original concerns, and that means a lot to me!

Or just put it in Your sleeping room, and then You buy a new one for the Livingroom, NTSC proof. Or just wait for the New Soccer Championships, the World Cup 2006 for instance, then there is a lot of asking for second hand televisions, all those people who go on holiday forgetting their TV and buy it at the campsite for the Worldcup. (Just an Idea) I heard it when I bought mine, they said no there are no second hand TV's there all sold out because of Soccer.

Hi there !

Just got a copy of the new Pendragon album "Believe".
The cd was on sale after the Arena concert at Verviers last saturday.

What I can say after 3 listenings is that I like it verrrrrrrry much !!!!
It sounds quite different from the previous efforts and this feels refreshing.

I'll write a more complete review after a more complete listening.

It sounds quite different from the previous efforts and this feels refreshing.

That "quite different" part is the thing i can't take yet. It's nice in my view, but there's still something missing to me. It's definitely no Not Of This World, wich is pure brilliancy to my humble opinion.

ha ha ha!!!
Of course it's not  NOTW!!! they made that one already!!! ;D

It's that catch 22 thing, if a band makes an album similar to the last, folk will say "yeah yeah heard that already!!!"  and if they make something a bit different it's   "oh it's not like the album before!"

wouldn't it be a bit boring if the same stuff came out over and over.........after all a comfort blanket really would fur up your cd player wouldn't it??? :D :D :D

Yes, a certain Joe Crabtree, never heard of him. I'm very curious, I will see Pendragon live on 13th May. Though I regret the departure of Fudge, I'm sure it will be a killer gig!

I'm going to my first Pendragon gig in Swindon on 11/5. I only own one Pendragon CD, which is Believe - which I really like. I would like to listen to some more music before the gig. In reality I can only afford / have the time to listen to 1 or 2 CDs.

Can anyone recommend my next purchases - criteria would be CDs that contain tracks they are likely to play live, rather than your fave CD.

Thanx Helenxxx

Very difficult to say. Because it's the 'Believe' tour they will play a lot from this album. I would say 'The Masquerade Overture'. The track 'Paintbox' is one they will certainly play. It is certainly one of their best and most successful albums. But 'The World' (1991), 'The Window of Life' (1993) and 'Not of this World' (2001) are great as well. They will pick one or a few from each album I guess. And this music is more 'listen and enjoy' than 'singing along' in my opinion.

Soundbites are excellent - but Nick's sense of humour borders on mine...i.e. perhaps not "Global-User" Friendly.
One half of me is cracking-up, and the other half is concerned that he'll be pissing-off e.g. Martin Hudson / Northern Accents. Or Sweatshirt-around-the-waist-wearers / Fat Birds / Voluptuous Females.

Still - in Nick's defence, it's his website - if you don't like it, you don't have to watch, etc.

I for one find it excellent...!  8)
