I have been watching Stargate Universe but am now completely confused. I was sure the last episode was the first part of 2 but this week was about something else altogether.

Yesterday evening when i was in the company of tissues and a couple of cups of tea i watched:

"Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

V for Vendetta.

Marvellous.

Well, I had 2 weeks off from work so that helped. ;D What also helped is that my girlfriend is into Lost as well, but she had only seen the first season. So we watched about 100 episodes of 40 minutes each. That's only 67 hours in total, so that's not too bad...or is it? :o ;D

And Michelle Rodriguez, is that the one who played Ana Lucia?

Stunning is the word.

I saw the 3D version (the real McCoy) with Ms 007, and we were totally transfixed for two hours. The last 40 minutes we could'v done without - gruesome! - but I guess that JC is bound up with the gamers  :-\

You can see it like that but I would say that the story is not the most important thing here ... but it is good enough not to prevent you from enjoying what you see. And what you see -in 3D of course, that is what makes it really extraordinary- is, as Nicky confirmed, stunning. I could have done without the final  "starship troopers style" battle too but I guess it would have reduced the spectrum of potential costumers.

Anyway, go and see it : it's a safe pick. And if you don't like it, I pay you the ticket back, promised  ;)

Kansas - There's Know Place Like Home

Man, what an awesome gig with a killer song selection *horns*  Rich Williams is an immensely gifted and criminally underrated guitar player and Steve Walsh still can sing (at least on this DVD, don't know about overdubs).

Never have seen Kansas live will be one my greatest musical regrets. I would give a lot of money to get back in time and see them perform during the Monolith tour. But this DVD is already a huge consolation !

Sorry for all the superlatives but Kansas is something really special in my musical universe for some 30 years  8)

An incredibly touching scene, the last scene in Riding In Cars With Boys  :'(

Two great actors: Drew Barrymore & James Woods !

Don't be mistaken about Drew: She's sexy alright, but she's also a moving (in all senses) actress.

In this movie, "She really nailed it."

Guys, if ya havent seen it yet, then  ;)

And it's based on a true-life story, Beverly D'Onofrio's book with that name.

And for the feinschmeckers: Chet Atkins plays the guitar on this song, All I Have To Do Is Dream, the original Everly Brothers' version (1958).

From Dan Aldridge's review of Riding In Cars With Boys on IMDB:

"I admit that I watched this movie for the most frivolous of reasons: I liked Brittany Murphy's performance in the trailer ('My daughta's a tramp!'). I really never cared for Drew Barrymore, before. However, my opinion of her has changed. Drew put in an INCREDIBLE performance in this movie. She really nailed it. In fact, all of the actors gave commendable performances. I was so moved that I was quite uncomfortable for much of the movie. The pain that was portrayed was so real that I almost regretted purchasing what I thought was supposed to be a comedy. I'm glad I got through it - and an hour later I'm still stunned by what I saw. This movie is well worth seeing.

I also think that this movie was a kind of therapy for Beverly, who is standing up, triumphantly, shouting, 'I went through a lot of crap and I made it!'"

Hey guys, am I becoming a sentimental old milksop ?  ::)

Nicky.

Another amazing last scene of a movie, this time David Lynch's fabulous Lost Highway, with David Bowie singing I'm Deranged - fitting - after an orgy of mindboggling weirdness  :o *horns*

Actually Bowie fits very well into this sorta agenda  8)

Am I becoming a last-scene collector ?  ;D

Anvil - The story of Anvil

A moving , funny , tragic , uplifting story of , mainly , 2 men following their dream of being rock stars some 30 years after they started.

I never really took any notice of Anvil back in the 80's but they appear to be bloody decent blokes who put on a hell of a performance whether playing to 156 or 10506

More power to them is what i say

I don't usually participate in these discussions  :P  but I happened to (OK guys? ;D ) see the last 15 minutes of the match Spain-Uruguay, and it was terrific. I mean, otherwise I would have happened to go somewhere else  ;)

And the spics - sorry - Spaniards played tremendously. Amazingly fast runs and deliveries. So my bet is that they'l be in the finals.

So guys, surprised huh ?  But this is my five cents  :)

I am also betting on a Spanish final victory but Germany is clearly the most impressive team so far, I mean the one that best exploits as a body its somewhat inferior potential.

Since football is before everything else a team sport, I am glad that Spain and Germany have reached the semi-finals ! But I am also glad for the numerous Dutch Roomies, of course  :D : because of Maradona's poor coaching, you won't get the revenge of the 1978 finals but you could get the revenge of 1974's !!!

:o I can't believe what I just read. Care to explain? ;D

Spain played against Paraguay though, not Uruguay. ;)

But I don't agree with you, I think Spain can do so much better. But maybe this is the way to the final. In that case it's justified to play 'ugly'. I'm hoping for a final with The Netherlands and Spain. Should be entertaining. But first 'we'll' have to beat Uruguay tonight. I'm hoping for the best!

I watched the second part of Sherlock last saturday end I'm going to watch the third part of it tomorrow.
It is basically a three-parts movie series (I missed the first one) starring a certain Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr Watson... in the 21st century ! I must say I really enjoyed it, and the use of technology in the secnario does not take over the way Sherlock Holmes has been imagined by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Yesterday, I watched the documentary movie The story of Anvil and I found it really heart-rending.

Those really nice guys in their 50's chase their dream for 30 years or so and will never reach success, playing most of the time in front of a dozen people.

I was astonished that, without record company and with money lent by their family, they recorded recently with Chris Tsangarides who produced such albums as Thin Lizzy's Renegade or Angra's Fireworks, just to name two huge records in my book  *horns*, not to mention a more obscure album  ;D entitled Painkiller.

The bits of their music heard in the documentary really did nothing for me but their dedication really deserves respect.

Yes, that's where I know Chris Tsangarides from. Painkiller is Priest's first great prog album, with their first great prog song A Touch Of Evil, and Glenn's and K.K.'s first sweep-picking on a studio album, in the title song, which once again put Priest at the cutting edge of rock *horns*

You guys should wake up to this formidable band  ;)

Just finished watching an episode (the first actually) of the Jekyll television series (BBC, 2007).
Intense stuff. Brilliant actor (James Nesbitt).

I've already seen this entire series some time ago, but I'm planning to see the whole thing again.
Those who've never seen it: go check it out, it's awesome.

It stars James Nesbitt as Tom Jackman, a modern-day descendant of Dr. Jekyll, who has recently begun transforming into a version of Mr. Hyde (also played by Nesbitt). Jackman is aided by psychiatric nurse Katherine Reimer, played by Michelle Ryan. Gina Bellman also appears as Claire, Tom's wife. - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jekyll_(TV_series)#Episodes)

Looks good indeed!

Hmm, now I'm thinking about buying me a box. ...  :o ::) ;)

Yes guys, you can't go wrong with this box. There's something for everyone to enjoy. A few Fish-era songs, the whole of Seasons End, short songs, (very) long ones, and everything in between! I finished watching the last DVD a few nights ago and they sure saved the best for last, since I think that Neverland on this DVD is the very best version of it I ever saw them do. You have to see it for yourself to see what I mean, it's just brilliant :)

By the way, here are some more previews:

Watched Memento with my father on Friday evening. It's one of the most complicated movies I've ever seen! It's full of flashforwards and flashbacks, and it's sometimes a bit hard to link the whole thing together. Very interesting movie, in my opinion- though I do not advice you to watch it if you have a headache  ;).

Out Of Season was filmed at the convention in Port Zélande and Live In Montreal was filmed at the convention in - you guessed it - Montreal. The setlists are the same on both DVD-sets but the vibe is totally different. Out Of Season is more polished while Live In Montreal is more raw. If you were to buy one I would suggest you to choose Out Of Season.

Ah I see.
I can understand that people like to collect everything their favourite band has put out, but to me it looks as if Marillion is trying to suck money out of everywhere...  :-\

I will spare my money for "Out Of Season" then. Too bad it's slighty more expensive...

Nobody is being forced to buy anything but lets make this clear: First and foremost Marillion is a business. They are trying to make money. What yould you do if you had a business? Rest on your laurels or would you try to do the same? Sorry but I just cringe when I read such accusations, especially in this corner of the musical spectrum where bands are having lots of problems making any money at all because everything they worked so hard for is up for grabs on the net these days. ::)

Yeah but Out Of Season comes in a nice box (unlike Live In Montreal), is professionally filmed (unlike Live In Montreal) and has a 5.1 soundtrack (unlike Live In Montreal). ;)

Yes, I know what you mean. And of course they have to make a living. I know. ;) And I try to support them by buying at least all their studio albums (can't find "This Strange Engine", "Radiation" and "Marillion.com" :'() since I really like their music and I respect their versatility and impact on the genre we all love.

I wanted to write a big reply including my view on the 'Happiness On The Road' live series among other things. ;D
Including the necessity of such releases. But that wouldn't be fair since it would be my subjective view, and the band naturally(!) has the right to do whatever they want! Bless 'em!

The shadow line - 7 part drama with the 5th episode this week. It is about a the search for the killer of a drug lord by both the police and the crime fraternity. It is fantastically well acted and written and i am hooked  :)

Zodiac - film about the Zodiac killings in California late 60s early 70s. Again it was engrossing and i loved it.

Dr Who - mid season finale and so far my favourite season of this excellent programme.

Yesterday I watched Sherlock on the telly.
I think it is a nice show. Would love to see the second series.
It's co-created by Steven Moffat, who's the headwriter and producer of Doctor Who at the moment, and Mark Gatiss, who wrote several Doctor Who episodes.

I've also seen the new Torchwood series and it's really cool! *horns*
I really like it that it's one big story. The first two series where great as well, but Children Of Earth was so good! Loved it. "Miracle Day" is going to be great as well.

Draco, I don't think that this short plot summary from IMDb is a spoiler; on the contrary, it actually got me stoked:

"An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years."

Hope it's OK with you  :)

It is, but Pink Floyd was always more a visual spectacle then a true live act without the lights and such so on this DVD PF looks barely naked.
This makes it quite real but then in a surrealistic way.

I finally watched the little 'making of' of "Vicitim's Of A Modern Age".
It's was much fun to watch, as is always the case with Arjen.

I'll mention one thing:

First you see a cool vid of Joost van den Broek doing a nice keyboard solo. After that, we see Arjen who's talking about the keyboard solos that Joost just did. And he says "Great sound, great playing, very virtuoso, great melodies. Just too bad that he's a real 'lul'."

Man, that came totally unexpected, I could only burst into laughter. Loved Arjen's face when he said that. Then he said it another time: "Joost is een lul!"

Immediately after that, we see another vid of Joost playing this amazing sounds. And the lettering says: 'Joost 'LUL' van den Broek'.

Very random, but very funny! I liked it! ;D

I've seen it too. And I'm not sure. It's interesting in a way, but I simply found it boring, and the characters not really convincing. When you take away all that, there's left the story which started alright, but it most of all was a 'vision' of the writer. And that vision is something that I've heard a lot already. It's again one way (a very refined one I must say) to tackle Christianity.
I can see why non-christians like it, because it strengthens them in their thoughts. Since I am a christian, I don't agree with these thoughts and it left me with just a boring film in my opinion.

Ah well... you can't have 'm all. ;)

Yes, I think so too. I, for one.

What I found most gripping were the soul issues:  What's it like to be so completely different from all other humans ? - to live with such a secret that you can't share with other people ? - to have to leave close friends totally after ten years ? - to know sooo many people intimately thru all those years ? - to have personally experienced the things that others learn about second-hand from history books ? - the loneliness, the inability to share completely your life with your partner ?

And when you have shared the secret with a few select friends, the unfathomable distance between you and them ? - the resentment at you surviving them ? How will knowing that you exist somewhere on earth affect their further lives ?

So many questions  :o

The witty take on the life of Jesus Christ was intriguing, but it can't shake the foundations of my faith, as my faith has a different focus  ;)

In February I watched a science fiction tv series called "Outcasts", about colonists populating a new planet. A few months ago I watched "Falling Skies", an American science fiction tv series about the aftermath of an alien invasion. And now I'm following "Terra Nova".

Who knows this television programme? I found it very similar to "Outcasts" but this one is better I think. A few more interesting ingredients.

I heard that lots of people didn't like "Falling Skies", but I thought it was OK. Far better than "Outcasts". It had exciting moments and I always wanted to know what the next episode was going to be. Although, there were also a few things that were a bit 'meh', or 'rrrrrrright...'
I really liked it! And "Terra Nova", I like it as well. Like I said, it's similar to "Outcasts" (right to the point of plagiarizing!), but where "Outcasts" failed, "Terra Nova" didn't. Beautiful scenes too. Add a few dinosaurs here, a group of rebels there and you have a great tv show.

I was quite skeptical after seeing TV spots, but it turns out they show part of the series in a way that makes it sound like the worst show in the universe. I'm glad it's not. CGI effects just look awesome.

Yeah, I've seen "Terra Nova" and I liked it very much. Although I must say it has many similarities to the British series "Outcasts".
Some said that "Terra Nova" is like a science fiction version of "Little House On The Prairie", and I can see why. It's got a 'family thing' to it.

I'm trying to follow "Grimm" and "Alcatraz".

Grimm is about a cop who is a 'grimm'. Some people are actually creatures from the grimm fairy tales. Like a big bad wolf, or a pig. The fairy tales weren't just tales, but warnings. Only a grimm can see these creatures for what they are. It's kind of ridiculous series, but it holds my attention just enough to keep watching.

Alcatraz is one I just jumped in on. It's about the Alcatraz island, obviously. In the 1960s Alcatraz closed and all the prisoners were moved to other prisons. But in reality this never happened. They disappeared and reappeared fifty years later, where they have their revenge on people. So there's some wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff going on.

About Terra Nova : maybe I am getting too old but I find it rather dull. The episode with the "birds" coming back home was  :P And why did they take the same actor than in Avatar to play the camp's chief ?  ::) It brings to mind comparisons that are not in TN's favor IMO.

Oops, long time no update in this thread (and others, too!)

Sooo, I finished Terra Nova a few months ago. I must say it turned to be disappointing. Not unpleasant, but plots were a bit too simplistic, the characters were not all very consistent... We were told it was a high-budget series, and I don't doubt that. But even some (few, yes, but still!) of the CGI scenes were failed! Overall, it looked really good, but it is quite incredible to think that some of the images of such an expensive series can be failed. Of course, many paleontological aspects of the show are complete nonsense, but I expected that.  ;)
I heard Fox was trying to sell the show. I'm not opposed to a season 2, but they better get some serious scenarists to get the series back on solid feets.

I completely forgot to talk about Sherlock here. Was fan of the first season, and the second just proves incredibly good. Inventive, fast-paced, and respectful of Conan Doyle's works... Characters are very convincing, and we quickly like them. A must-watch, in my opinion.

Now, I was interested for some time in Primeval, as it involved time passages and dinosaurs. So I watched season one, and started season 2 today. I'm a bit confused, as it mixes good elements and in a second turns in complete chaos. There are some vey interesting leads, but the overall picture seems a bit... weak. I came to wonder if scenarists fell into profound coma at some moments (this is a spolier alert, although it's only about the pilot episode) (e.g., one of the very first thing the Home Office does upon the discovery of time anomalies is to send an investigation team into the past? Really? Have these people ever heard of the Butterfly effect?) or if they had smoked what was in their backyards (this spoiler alert is about season 1 finale) (the Home Office lets Helen Cutter go back through the anomaly without preventing her, asking her why anomalies happens, and everything she knows...?!. Also, I found that when the series tried humor (which happens relatively often), it's 50/50: either it works, either it looks a bit ridiculous. On the other hand, some plot twists are intelligent, and scenarists manage to make the situation evolve a bit episode from episode. I am really wondering where all this is going. If you don't take it too seriously, it is entertaining, but I would've liked something a bit more cohesive.
I've heard that a Canadian spin-off was on its way. It is said to be darker, more serious than the original show. That would be welcome. I'm very interested in paleontology (especially dinosaurs, eversince I was a kid), and the basic idea for the series is great. I hope they will be able to create a show that makes sense.

As big Sherlock Holmes fan I enjoyed Sherlock too.
Sometimes I forget that he isn't real, but I remember reading his biography some years ago. :)
Looking forward to season 2, but its not broadcasted before May here in Germany.
We'll have three famous stories as background there. A Scandal in Bohemia, The Hound of the Baskervilles and The final problem.
I'm very curious about "The Woman" Irene Adler. Great character.

Last week I've finally seen the Terminator movies. I grew up never watching these 'classic' Schwarzenegger films and people always told me that I missed something. "You need to see these movies before you die" and all that. Well, I've seen them. I enjoyed it. Still feel I could die happily even if I didn't see them, but it was nice either way. I like how the fourth movie is both a prequel and a sequel to the series.
Anyone else seen them? And what do you think of them?

A movie that has really boggled my mind is The Man From Earth, which I'v now watched thrice thru. It can easily bear so many views  *horns*

@PH : I liked the first and the last but I don't consider them as unforgettable. Episodes 2 and 3 were a huge waste of money IMHO.

There are many better movies of this period in the scifi genre, even with Schwarzy. I had much more fun watching Predator, for instance, or even The 6th Day or Total Recall.

The last action movie that I really enjoyed -but be warned that it is very violent- is Kick-Ass. I had several laughters that I did not expect  :)

Well the first (The Terminator) was alright. But it's more of a brainless action movie. Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese was nice, since I've only known him as Commander Michael McNeil in the video game "Tiberian Sun". The second movie was pretty funny and has the memorable lines like: "I'll be back" and "Hasta la vista, baby". It was actually full of funny quotes and moments. Just don't take it all too seriously and you have a great laugh.
The third (Rise Of The Machines) was the most forgettable in the franchise.
Terminator Salvation was nice in it's own right. But I feel it was taking itself too seriously. Still nice to watch though. I don't think this one would make much sense if you didn't see the previous movies.

That movie has been on my "to-watch" list for months, friends of mine saw it and said it was fun. I think I'm going to give it priority on my list, since I get more and more positive feedbacks.  :)

I forgot to mention that I recently watched Matrix with friends (I have somehow managed to live through the 2000's as a teenager without watching it). Interesting concept, fast-paced interpretation, some good and some pretty ridiculous fight scenes, gigantic plot holes... rather fun overall, but I wouldn't watch it all over again too soon if I were given the chance.

Yeah, that was the main problem with the first three seasons in my opinion. It seems to me that season 4 has some longer story to tell, with more link between the episodes. At least, it looks this way (I just started this season, so I can't definetely tell yet). I wtahced the first three seasons partly because I always had interest in paleontology, and though this show is far from scientific, I wanted to see what they could come up with.

I generally consider Eurovision a load'o crap. But the winner this time, Loreen, has somethin about her. Not only is her performance singularly memorable, but she's got her own special power. Some excerpts from Wiki:

Lorine Zineb Noka Talhaoui (born 16 October 1983 in Västerås, Sweden), better known by her stage name Loreen, is a Swedish-Moroccan pop singer and music producer. Loreen represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, with her entry "Euphoria" and won the first place with 372 points.

She became known to Swedish audiences after taking part in the Swedish Idol 2004 competing as Lorén Talhaoui. She was initially picked as a wildcard by the judges to join the singing competition. She finished 4th overall.

Loreen met local human rights activists, the only 2012 Eurovision entrant to do so. She later told reporters, "Human rights are violated in Azerbaijan every day. One should not be silent about such things." A government spokesman criticized her in response, saying that the contest should not "be politicised" and requested the EBU prevent such meetings.

Swedish diplomats replied that the EBU, Swedish TV and Loreen had not acted against the competition's rules.

Nicky.

I saw a french TV program showing a journalist asking each participant what they thought about the situation down there, and most wouldn't answer. It's good to see that one or two such as Loreen have the guts to say the truth, while the others cowardly shut their mouths, but they should be more numerous to speak up. I can't believe the others can just pretend those probelms do not exist for the sake of the competition.

Back to the thread: I just watched the trailer for the next Muse album. Sounded good at first, but then it turns to a dubstep kind of thing. I'm not against a band changing to make something new, on the contrary, but here I don't think this is the right direction to go. In my opinion, dubstep is the anti-definition of music. I am willing to give them a chance, though, but I must say I'm not very confident about what's to come.

It's a world of superficial glamor (where also music has become some sorta weird slush) ... and occasionally some surprising interesting person turns up in the midst of it  :)

I've just seen "1492: Conquest Of Paradise" for the third time. Although the film was not a big succes, I think it is a very nice movie. I love the music (Vangelis) and the scenery is very convincing.

The main theme (Conquest Of Paradise) is a really nice song. It remained at number 1 position of the Dutch top 40 charts for ten weeks.
But I think the rest of the musical score is also top notch! Highly recommended!
Check for example this beautiful piece of music:

I am in the middle of the second season of Game of Thrones and I am enjoying it big time. The beginning of the first season left me reluctant but I got more and more hooked as the story developed. I had not been that excited by a TV series since Rome, although I enjoyed the Tudors a lot too.

Also enjoying Dexter's 7th season : I thought the series could not reasonably go on after Dexter's wife death but the screenwriters did a fine job to build a clever follow-up. Of course, it is way over the top but it is still more or less credible in its own way.

Watching and reading much le Carré these days. The two Karla movies with George Smiley (played by the incomparable Alec Guiness) are thrilling. I've watched the complete Question Mark Suite both on my pc and on the dvd player in the living room. It seems to be working (and it's absolutely fantastic to see these guys play).
Of course I'm glad it's working for me, but it sucks big time that you had the problem twice... :(

Yesterday I stumbled upon the movie Rock Of Ages on TV and, though the movie is (very) far from a masterpiece, I confess I had a lot of fun listening to all these classic hard rock/AOR anthems of my youth from -amongst others- Journey, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, Scorpions, Twisted Sisters, Pat Benatar ...

Some covers are rather good, others butcher the original song but all in all I spent two hours of guilty pleasure at the Bourbon.

The cover of Journey's Don't Stop Believin' is my favorite part. The mix of man and female vocals refreshes the song. I always thought that this song is underdeveloped and could have become a huge epic with some extra soloing and instrumentation. Maybe another cover will do it justice one day ?

Been watching Marble Hornets on Youtube. Looks good considering it's all made by amateurs despite some minor plot-holes, but I'm starting to wonder whether the story is actually leading anywhere.
I've also been watching Death Note, had already read the manga a few years ago. One of the only Japanese anime series actually worth it, and that is not only aimed at teenagers.

I don't know what it is with RPWL. I really like the album "World Through My Eyes", but everything before or after that is not doing it for me. If you're a real RPWL fan, you should tell me why. ;) Perhaps someone can give me tips on how to like this band. :P

I also liked Blind Ego's first album (didn't really get much into the second), which was very different from RPWL and has Paul Wrightson and John Mitchell on vocals! *horns* Never got to buy me a physical copy though... It's hard to find.

Heard The Killers too, the guys have good musical taste ;)
Made my way to the end of season 2. Some episodes were really not necessary in my opinion. But when they make good ones, they make REALLY good ones. I wish they spent more time on some details, but overall I am satisfied with the direction they have taken - it looks like they drop the "one-shot" episode format as they go. And John Noble is a fantastic actor.

I mainly watch historical programs in TV. Lots of good ones on our Kanal K, K for Kultur.

Dead tired of all the detective series - both American, English, German, Swedish, Danish - cuz they'v run outta interesting intrigues. The only good thing in them is the babes ;D

Usually a bunch of women get massacred, the guys beat each other up - yeah, I'v seen enuff of that - yawn. And I'm tired of seeing pompous gorillas in suits.

Got a good collection of dvd's. The best I can see several times, and then I can select choice parts 8)

Gave up 2 episodes into seaon 4. Found the plot was evolving too slowly and that we'd kind of seen it all before. I often feel like episodes begin in a cool and interesting way, but usually end up disappointed. If you've seen season 4, do you think it would be worth it for me to try and catch up?

The "seen it before" feeling is always there in this series but to be honest I really love this fourth season. I would recommend you to hold on at least until episode 8 which is the midseason finale and is really breathtaking ! The difference with previous seasons is that this time there is a complete focus on a few characters on each episode to a point that the other ones don't appear at all. But they are (almost) all reunite in episode 8 and ... you will see  ;)

I am up to episode 13 now and I can't wait to watch the last three.

You shouldn't expect much stage show with Royal Hunt, they'r really in it for the music. André has had four brilliant singers in his stable - D.C. (1994–1998, 2011–present), John West (1999–2007), Mark Boals (2007–2011), even Danish Henrik Brockmann (1990–1994) tho he had rather much Danish accent at the time - and they all put up a fine show live; even so, one is best off with RH by getting into their studio albums first, and here Collision Course is a must.

Quote
The "seen it before" feeling is always there in this series ...

There's too much repetition in TV-series for me. The only series that I as a grown-up have enjoyed more than one or two episodes of is Columbo, Monty Python, The Sopranos, In Treatment, and Inspector Morse.

Columbo because his character reminds me of myself, or at least the way I like to think of myself ;) : reserved, sometimes childishly so, for a painfully long period, and then suddenly lunge forward with authority - like I guess you guys have experienced in the Room ;)

Peter Falk was also a very spiritual person 8)

Monty Python is English humour (put the "u" in this time) at its very best ;D

The Sopranos are also very extreme, but in a hilarious way. In series, it's very much up to the actors, and James Gandolfini is superb. All his crazy dreams set me rolling ;D

Gabriel Byrne is always interesting, and in In Treatment, he's at his best: upfront and restrained. Some interesting character unravelling in this originally Israeli series, but after a while, it gets a bit too fabricated.

The Inspector Morse stories are rather far-fetched, but there is something very delectable English about the whole atmosphere (Òxfòrd), and even some pearls of wisdom - which is very rare in most other series :)

Big Bang Theory could'v been of interest to me as a physicist, but the characters are way too extreme, their intonation makes me cringe.

Poirot, "Murder, She Wrote", and Miss Marple are so smug and clichéd that I can't stand them :P

Not really a now watching post, but I've been seeing some western scenes here and there as part of my US cinema class lately. Not a genre I know too much, but I really enjoy it. Slowly catching up.

I am really enjoying Elementary, The Blacklist and Flemming (which has just finished)

Nooo! Haha sorry I could not resist it.  :D I haven't seen the series, but I heard they were an American version of BBC's Sherlock. I would advise you to watch the original if you haven't  already. You might consider it as en extreme reaction, but the only fact that they had to do an American version with the 43 minutes / 22 episodes and all makes me sick. Not because I don't like the format, but rather 'coz the whole "let's remake it but tailor it for our public" (be it America, the UK or France) just doesn't make any sense to me - it's regionalism. Too often I find these remakes do not bring anything new, except from the satisfaction to some consumers that they're watching something that doesn't demand adapting their experience to another culture. Not saying this is the case for you nor for this particular series of course (especially since I haven't seen it, I can't tell!), I just wanted to give my opinion on this "remake" trend.  :)
I also wonder if turning the character of John Watson into a woman didn't kind of killed the vibe there was in their relationship. I found it weird they actually made that change happen, I'd like to hear how the scenarists justify it.

It is because they threw much of the original away. Joan Watson is a really cool twist.

I have watched all things Sherlock during my life. Basil Rathbone, Peter Cooke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Douglas Wilmer ( check out the adventures of sherlock holmes' smarter brother).

So because they did their own thing it works fine. If they had copied Sherlock (last few years) it woiuld probably have been awful.

Had to play against a human wall, and they didn't had the intention to play and go for a score at all!

I wouldn't say that. Costa-Ricans did the best of what they could with their limited abilities. Their defense was heroic and they had one huge opportunity to score just before the end of extra-time. I enjoyed the game a lot.

The silence on Dutch television. :(

The tragedy that happened last week above the Ukraine, has left its marks in many of us.
It's a day of national mourning in the Netherlands, a minute of our silence is all we can do right now.

Let's hope it will never happen again, and that the guilty ones should get accounted for their actions.
This 'mistake' ended the lives of 298 innocent people, on their way to their holidays and for work or other.

No one had the right to change their destination...

Good to hear. I don't have a problem with electronic itself, but the way Muse handled it was sometimes closer to techno/dubstep and all that stuff, which I do not enjoy at all.

Of course I started with the original series (1966-1969) and I'm nearing the end of the second season.

I did a quick search and now I think I know what happened here. I've always thought Star Trek fans were called Trekkies, but let's see what Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fandom#Trekkie_vs._Trekker) says:

There is considerable disagreement among Star Trek fans over whether to use the term Trekkie or Trekker. Some say that Trekkie is "frequently depreciative", thus, "not an acceptable term to serious fans", who prefer Trekker.

So I guess if you're taking your Star Trek fandom (too) seriously you refer to yourself as being a Trekker. Non-Trekkers might call you a Trekkie, or even worse: a total nutcase. ;D

I think I've seen most of "Farscape", which was alright too (didn't like every bit of it though) and "Doctor Who" (obviously, I'd say).

If you haven't watched it, you've missed nothing special.
This documentary was a disappointment. It started out OK with the school that they went to and a few photos I hadn't seen before. But they went through it really fast. I think maybe 2-3 minutes per album. And just one minute for "Selling England...". "Wind And Wuthering" wasn't mentioned at all as far as I recall. Most of the time was reserved for the pop years. And quite a bit of time was filled with the solo work of Tony, Peter, Mike and Phil. Steve Hackett doesn't have a solo career of course.

Oh and after "We Can't Dance" they disbanded and they didn't get together again before 2007 for a reunion. ::)

OK, so I have seen all episodes of Star Trek The Original Series (TOS) (really liked it), some of The Animated Series (TAS) (it's ok) and the first four movies.
The trilogy of II: The Wrath Of Khan, III: The Search For Spock and IV: The Voyage Home was really enjoyable. The Motion Picture not so much.

I think I like The Voyage Home best, it was funny, a nice story, and overall very enjoyable.

So a top 4 (since we seem to like those things):
1. The Voyage Home
2. The Wrath Of Khan
3. The Search For Spock
4. The Motion Picture

I'm watching Star Trek more or less in air date order, so next I'm gonna watch the first two seasons of The Next Generation (TNG) and then movie number five and so on.
Do we need a seperate Star Trek topic now?

Star Trek: The Next Generation, season 7
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, season 2

I'm watching Star Trek in original air date order. And since TNG and DS9 were aired in parallel at some point, I'm watching two shows now.
I'm enjoying all of this a lot. Actually, as soon as I've also watched Voyager and Enterprise, I'll probably start all over with the original Star Trek again. Haha!

The problem with netflix and all those other movie channels is; time.

Don't want to pay a couple of euro's for the three or four films I watch in a month.

I am a fan of films though.
Just not the films my kids like to watch. ;)

Plus, I prefer to watch films on tv, not on a computer, laptop, tablet or, even worse, mobile phone.

I'll probably hold on to my account until I've caught up on the Doctor Who series.

We have a new channel on Dutch television. It's called BBC First. And I'm enjoying it a lot. We get a lot of those British detective series, like "Midsomer Murders", "Father Brown" and "New Tricks". Still watching Star Trek. I think you can call me a Trekker now (not Trekkie of course, you silly!).
I'm nearing the end of season 5 of Deep Space Nine and the end of season 3 of Voyager.
Voyager is more in line with The Next Generation, but I do like DS9 too. I think Maddox might be right in saying that Voyager is the best of the Star Trek series.

Have watched 'XX' by a band called 'Arena'. Excellent performance, music was top notch as always. Just finished A.C.T's new dvd "Trifles And Pandemonium".

You know, I had this idea, to watch the first half of the concert tonight, the second half tomorrow and the bonuses (2 hours worth of interviews/documentary) to spread out over the weekend. But once I started I just couldn't stop! So I've watched the full three and a half hour A.C.T goodness at once! If you are an A.C.T fan, these bonus videos are pretty cool!
And the live concert is very well played. It's actually a live in studio sort of thing. There's no audience (too bad :( I'm missing the live ambience a bit...), it's more like a 90 minute music video. (Big Big Train will also release such a dvd this year.) Still good though, I enjoyed it so much. It's like a "best of" and a testament of the band.

I've seen them live in 2007, they are really good. Man, what am I saying? They're one of my absolute favourite bands! I hope they will come back to The Netherlands again. I'll be there. And I just hope that if they do, they'll film it for a real live release. ::) ;D

Still, very glad I got this! Any A.C.T release is fine with me. I'm hoping they won't let us wait another ten years for another studio album!!

The title track, which is about 34 minutes, has track number 10 and 11. By the change from 10 to 11 both sound and images go back for about a minute. That seems to be the case with all DVDs. Check the YouTube video

I was trying to watch the new Star Trek movies, but found it very difficult. I saw the first movie (just Star Trek apparently) and didn't have that Star Trek feeling I had with the series or the older movies. It felt more like a parody. Actually I thought it was pretty bad. If I want to see Capt. Kirk and crew again, I'd rather watch The Original Series. These guys are not the same people. And I'm obviously not talking about the actors, but the characters. The second Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness I stopped watching halfway, because I felt so bored. I can't believe they call this Star Trek... Anyone here who has seen these new movies?

The second Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Into Darkness I stopped watching halfway, because I felt so bored. I can't believe they call this Star Trek... Anyone here who has seen these new movies?

Another one came out this year: Star Trek: Beyond...

They are okay, I guess.
Lot more action and a bit naughty as well, but a contrast to everything before these three films.
Babylon 5 is a bit more harder than the rest, but still old-school compared to the new cast.

Yes, it's an action movie. I must admit that I find the other (older) Star Trek movies pretty cheesy sometimes. They try to be funny to the point it gets embarassing, but at least they were loyal to the history of the series. The new Star Trek movies are throwing everything overboard. Spock and Uhura are lovers? Really? ::) Totally unbelievable.

I'm watching Star Trek: The Animated Series on Netflix.
I skipped this when watching the whole of Star Trek because it's not considered canon.

Also watching Prison Break. Season 3 now. It's pretty good. Some of my colleagues are very enthusiastic about it. If I have to believe them it will change my life. But that's not really the case. Still good though.

I think it's time to purchase a Marillion DVD (or BluRay) again.

I've been watching Prison Break. Anyone seen this series? I've finished the fourth season, and sort of glad it's over. The last twelve (or so) episodes were a total stretch.
A fifth season is airing now, and I'll probably go see it, but not immediately...

Also, I watched the first disc of the "Morsefest! 2015" Blu-Ray.
Two of my favourite Morse albums ("?" and "Sola Scriptura") played live. I was really moved a couple times. I was really surprised by the Question Mark Overture, because the actual album doesn't have one. And it's a good one!

I've only just seen the first disc, but it's weekend now, so there should be time for the second disc!

I think you mean Luke Cage, since Johnny Cage seems to be a character from the Mortal Kombat fighting game franchise (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Cage).
So how are those Marvel superheroes tv series? They are all connected to each other right? If I want to check it out, where should I start?

The 100, I've seen a couple of episodes. It was alright, I might check it out again.
And what is 3% about?

At the moment I'm not really following any series on Netflix. Waiting for the new Star Trek series and now it's just paying each month without seeing much, actually.

Yep, you're right. I meant Luke Cage.
Blond moment on my side. ;)

QuoteSo how are those Marvel superheroes tv series? They are all connected to each other right? If I want to check it out, where should I start?

I started with the Iron Fist, just randomly actually.
I don't think it's important which serie you begin with. During the seasons the heroes frequently appear in other series, and sometimes the reason is about the Hand.
I do think you should watch The Defenders last.
All the heroes (Daredevil, Luke Cage, The Iron Fist and Jessica Jones) appear in this serie, where fighting the Hand and resurrected Electra is the main priority.
Daredevil itself is sometimes quite harsh but that's not very different from the comics. Personally he's my favourite character.
Luke Cage begins as a man that doesn't want to be the hero, but it does get dull from time to time.
To much ghetto-mentality and the music that comes with it. (Rap, hiphop etc)
It does get better over time.
The Iron Fist goes a reverse path.
Starts really good but when the road progress' and he gets involved as a chairman in his fathers company, it gets a bit directionless. A bit too much 'I want to be the good guy'.

QuoteThe 100, I've seen a couple of episodes. It was alright, I might check it out again.

Definitely worth to check this serie.
The main characters Clarke Griffin and Bellamy Blake start of as adversaries but during the seasons they become the leaders of the 100 and they both realise they need each other to cope with any danger that lands on their path.
I can't wait for season 5, starts, if all goes well, in februari/march next year.

QuoteAnd what is 3% about?

3% is a Portugese serie about two sides on a devastated planet Earth.
The wealthy caste and the poor.
There is an island where the wealthy people live, but that's not the majority.
The majority are the poor.
During battles and tests the poor has the opportunity to cross the ocean and be a part of the island but sadly, only 3% of those who tries are accepted to enter.
Both the 100 and 3% are mainly for the young adult viewers but if your your at heart... ;)

QuoteAt the moment I'm not really following any series on Netflix. Waiting for the new Star Trek series and now it's just paying each month without seeing much, actually.

Well there's plenty to watch on Netflix, even the movies are worth while. Better than Ziggo horizon in my opinion.
Ziggo does have Game of Thrones...That's a great serie as well.
Hmm, choices... ;)

Since I asked the question I have already started. I started the Marvel Universe with "Daredevil" season 1, then "Jessica Jones" season 1, next the second season of "Daredevil", then "Luke Cage" and now half way with "Iron Fist". In retrospect, I think that's actually the best route to take, because it's the way the series aired. Characters get introduced and come back in other series (Claire Temple most notably).

Quote from: maddox on Thu, 2017-09-28, 20:18:05

Never read any of the comics. "Daredevil" is also my favourite. What I like about these characters is that it's actually not overdone (well not too much anyway). Matt Murdock is just a normal human being who trained his hearing and other senses because he lost his sight.

"Jessica Jones", I also really liked, because I like the concept of film noir. The main bad guy was a bit overdone though. Jessica is also a really believable character. Ok, she's really strong, but she's not fighting all the time like in the other series. Mad, you didn't mention "Jessica Jones". Did you see it?

Quote from: maddox on Thu, 2017-09-28, 20:18:05

"Luke Cage" was alright. I did like it. After "Daredevil" (which is indeed pretty violent at times), and "Jessica Jones" (which is more focused on psychological drama and trauma) , "Luke Cage" is a lot more light-hearted. Like you said, there's this focus on the ghetto and these 'tough guys' (which I find laughable). Still, some of the music was OK and did its job well of bringing me in this world. After a while I was a bit bored and glad it was done.

Quote from: maddox on Thu, 2017-09-28, 20:18:05

I'm now halfway "Iron Fist" but so far I like this the least. This character has a magic hand... It's the least believable of the four series. The main character, Danny, seems to be a guy who totally lost it. Of course he was outside of civilized society for most of his life, but still.

Most of the time I don't have time for a full movie. 40-60 minutes is ideal for me. So series it is. The problem with a movie is that when I DO have time, I want to watch something that I really like. When I watch a movie and find out that I didn't like it, I feel I wasted two (sometimes even three) hours...  ::)

Wow, never knew Dutch television had these interesting music documentaries. Then again, I don't watch much television. What channel?

When I say that I don't watch much television, then I mean actual television. I do watch series on Netflix for example.
This is what I have been/am watching recently:

- Fargo - I've seen the first and second seasons. Anyone seen this? I think it's great! Normally I tend to watch all seasons in a row, but after the second season I felt I had to take a break from Fargo and focus on other series. But I will return to the third season soon.

- Stranger Things - None of you ever mentioned Stranger Things. This series does a good job in sending us back to the eighties. If you haven't seen it, please do so. It's amazing! A mix of sci-fi and 'horror'. Well, is it horror? Mild horror then. Seriously, how they pull off the '80s vibe is impressive.

- Lost In Space - This is what I'd like to call 'feelgood sci-fi'. It's family friendly and not too difficult. Despite its obvious shortcomings, I liked it. When season 2 arrives, I'll be there to watch it.

- The Orville - THIS!! This!! This is what I'm talking about. To me, this is more Star Trek than Discovery was. It's obviously a parody of The Next Generation/Voyager, but to me it's much more than that. It's actually a good series on its own! While I really liked Star Trek: Discovery, I found it to be a bit too serious. It was dark, sombre, gloomy. DS9 had that too sometimes, but with more comedy. Discovery felt really grim. The Orville is truly a breath of fresh air. I'm halfway through the season and I'm glad there's a second season coming. (Also looking forward to second season of Discovery! ;) )

- 3% - Yeah, first season was really good! Second season is more 'meh'... The best thing in the first season (for me) was the different tests that the participants had to take. In the second season the focus is more on the two main sides and spies and double spies and triple spies and who to trust, etc. There was some of that in the first season, but more of it here. Still watching though!

NPO 2 and 3, they are still available to stream (which is the way I watched these documentaries). The programme "Uur van de wolf" in particular is worth checking out, they often have interesting music documentaries worth watching.

Thanks for the recommendations, I have heard of most of them but haven't watched these and don't have Netflix (yet..), to protect myself from too much binge watching  ::)

Today I've been watching to Sylvan - Posthumous Silence ~ The Show Live At Kampnagel

A long time ago that I played this DVD, very enjoyable 8).

I've been watching/listening to Pendragon - Past And Presence today. Long ago that I've played it because I prefer the more recent songs, but it was enjoyable.

Magenta - Gift From God (https://youtu.be/C3bBGyzEST0)
Nice song. Very pretty, albeit perhaps a bit too cliché prog. Funny to see John Mitchell playing guitar here. Although he's not really adding much substantially. A little bit underused I might say. Also, he's clearly enjoying himself... ::) Cheer up, John! You're in so many bands now. :) You're doing great with Lonely Robot. No need to be grumpy. ;)
Nice Mitchell-y guitar solos, not played by JM. ;D
That drummer... what a weird playing style, don't mean that in an offensive way. He's doing a good job.

All in all, not bad at all! Too bad Magenta doesn't do Spotify. Guess I need to find other ways to try out the album.

Today I finally found the time to watch Riverside - Lost 'N' Found - Live in Tilburg. What a beautiful DVD *horns*. I've attended the same gig, but in Zwolle. Memories ... and Piotr (R.I.P.) was the guitarist. Cool stuff, will be played more 8)

I thought I'd share this with all of you:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPYdWgJiryY

John Mitchell interviews Pete Trewavas about the new Transatlantic album. It's a good 47 minutes.

Side note: John Mitchell is starting to look more and more like DSI Dalziel. ;D

Oh and they end with this:
Pete to John: "Can I say one thing to you? Kino! Kino! Kino!" to which John replies: "Yes, Kino!"

So that's for another time! ;)

Cool. One of the heros of my youth, together with Steve Rothery (recently no. 2 guitarist in the 2020 PROG readers' poll), Ian Mosley, Mark Kelly and certainly: FISH!  :)

Thanks for sharing Paco, interesting interview. There are also equally long interviews with the other Transatlantic members I noticed, have not watched those. A new Transatlantic album is always a big event and what I have heard so far on YouTube sounds great. Not too sure about the two albums/versions gimmick though, it will be the Forevermore album for me. And new Kino stuff would be great indeed!

I have watched Airbag - A Day In The Studio ~ Unplugged In Oslo

Nice to watch once or twice, but unplugged all the tracks are sounding a bit the same IMHO. I do prefer the plugged versions :).

Have been watching Camel - Live At The Royal Albert Hall this afternoon. I didn't know half of the tracks, but I find it relaxing music. Great guitar solos from Andrew Latimer and what a musician Pete Jones is. Though he is blind, he plays keyboards and saxophone. Besides he has a very pleasant voice 8). Cool music for a sunny afternoon :).

This afternoon I've been watching Camel - Live At The Royal Albert Hall and really enjoyed it. Pete Jones adds so much to the music with his keyboards, saxophone and his voice 8). Haven't listened much to Camel for a long time, but that's going to change. I'm going to dig into their back catalogue :).

My girlfriend had never seen Doctor Who.
That had to be rectified, so I have seen the first three seasons again, for the fourth time or so. ;D
Unfortunately she makes me watch Once Upon A Time... It's strange watching her being an obsessive fangirl for this.

yes, I did. Crazy thing is that I have quite a bad memory, and watching something after a few years is often like watching it the first time, at least partly. But I remember the end, if that's what you mean. And I like it, I must say.
Right now, I'm only at s01 e09, quite a lot ahead.

I loved all of it, actually. It's the type of story you can completely dive into, forgetting everything around. For me, from a Fantasy fan perspective, probably on the same level as the legendary LotR, and with more twists. In fact, I despise people discussing apart why this and that part of a story was inappropriate or unfitting for this or that reason, like they were part of the writers' team or so. If they have such great ideas that everybody should consider "better" than what the author made, they should release their own stories, and see where it leads. Not to step on anyone's foot here, everybody is entitled to have an opinion, for sure. End of rant :D Just love it ;)
