One day Nick Barrett said that he would like to write such great track as Genesis number "Mad Man Moon". :-* What are your preferences? I mean Arena's all-time favourite songs.
My favorite track at the moment is 'The butterfly man'. It's the first song I heard from Arena by downloading it on the Arena website and now I'm an Arena fan. Also dig 'Moviedrome', what a variation on that song!.
Quote from: Teunis on Thu, 2005-03-17, 19:07:26Also dig 'Moviedrome', what a variation on that song!.
Not so strange considering it's 'bout 20 minutes long ;) I't one of my fav's too!
Not very difficult mostly, but in case of Arena, I don't know. Can't choose. My favorites are: Solomon, The hanging tree, Tears in the rain and Moviedrome. Opera fanatica is also doing pretty well! 8)
At the moment undecided between "The Shattered Room" and "Purgatory Road"
Maybe, their "Solomon" is still number one for me. Differ from Mark Jan, I can't value "Movedrome" so much. Sorry. :(
I can't choose between moviedrome, jericho, solomon, vanishing act, friday's dream etc...
;D
Phew so much great stuff to choose from. if pushed?
Solomon.
Nothing beats "Sirens"!
This is SO difficult!
I have answered this question some times before and with every album it gets harder.
Of course there will always be some all-time fave's such as Solomon, Sirens, Valley, Fool's Gold, Hanging Tree, Enemy, Breathe, Butterfly, Spectre, Cutting the Cards....
But to pick one best song out of all those...... But well, being an epic lover, the epic that really still does it for me is Solomon. The song has power and emotion that has not been equalled in any other song I know. It sounds a bit cheap having to say Solomon, but, well, honesty first :-)
My Top ten (in no particular order after the first place)
Hanging Tree and Mea Culpa in joint first place
Tears in the Rain
Riding the Tide
Opera Fanatica
Moviedrome
Solomon (that instrumental bit...)
The Healer
Crying for Help "x" (It's all the same, and you really should have known)
Painted Man
....surely Solomon.....
each listening is like the first time....
I fell in love with the Arena's sound ten years ago listening this track..... and the entire debut-album.... Unforgetable!!!
Solomon, A Spectre at the Feast and Ascension (they all favorite tracks, but these 3 seem to touch my sould, for some reason or other). I feel in "love" with Rob's voice :)
City Of Lanterns / Riding The Tide...for the time being anyway...
But I reserve the right to change my mind at any time, and for no apparent reason... ;)

Welcome DD,
There's a future for you in the Prog CD Artwork business...
Nice one.
What a difficult choise! :-[
I consider myself very lucky :) to have the opportunity to choose each time among this great number of masterpieces, having all their works.
But if I have to give an answer ... Solomon, Sirens, Moviedrome, Hanging Tree, Tears In The Rain, The Visitor, Shattered Rooms, Empire Of ...., Friday's Dream, Waiting For The Flood, .... Sorry me, I can't make such a selection  :)
Solomon62 (it's not a joke!! ;))
Right, in chronological order then...
Solomon, -just because it's good and it goes a bit mad at the end!
Medusa, -because it's also good and the keyboard line is good.
In The Blink Of An Eye, -because it asks interesting questions.
Moviedrome, -because it changes so much, and I also play the beginning of it when I walk through Westminster underground station. ??? It just seems to fit to me! ;)
Salamander, -because it's a catchy song.
Vanishing Act, -theres just something about this one!
Confrontation, -because this is exactly how confrontation music should sound. It's the guitar work! 8)
Purgatory Road, -because of the chorus.
Opera Fanatica, -for the instrumental work, and the line "The King is dead, so worship me..."
Hmmm.... that's hard!
At the moment: Salamander or Smoke and Mirrors.
Don't ask me why..... just love them!
It's a tie:
Witch hunt (the perfect start to a wonderful album)
Ascension (the perfect ending to a wonderful album)
Opera fanatica (just brilliant!)
I really admire the song writing skill and the artistry that lies behind songs like these. It's a humbling experience...

Great work, DD! :)
THANX´S ;D
Always hard to answer... Although this is easier than a top 5, then it gets REAL complicated. So just one: The Hanging Tree.
Remember very well hearing it the first time, shivers all over, especially when that huge dark theme erupts, the guitar solo at the end... Listening to this at a gig, eyes closed, is probably my ultimate Arena experience.
Im sure we all agree this is a hard question to answer, but ive got my 2 favorite tracks: "Running from Damascus" and "The Butterfly Man". Still, i cant make a 100% honest oppinion because there are so many great songs to choose from :-\
That's a nice picture.... :)

Wow, I never knew you could quote a quote! Here are you're missing smilies ^ (sorry, lol)
I just wanted to add a song that's not being mentioned, named Empire of a thousand days, it's also a great song with a lot of energy in it.
The couplet that speaks to me, is for all evil persons who killed other people because they say they are religious and following what they think is the will of God:
Can there be a heaven still,
for one who lies bleeding in the fields
A pardon for these actions and passions
Committed in the name of our salvation
I just wanted to say religion is meant to do good to other people and not to kill them, and I like that message very much, so thank You Clive

Love that track, my favourite on Pride. Like to see it return in the live set!
There are many songs ... to many tho choose one, but if I was about to be lost and alone in a desert island with only one song (sometimes I wish it'd happen) ... I'll take "Solomon" with me.

That's not a hanging tree in Your picture but a hanging guy or girl, who has hanged there for a while!!!!!!
Revising an older topic.....
As has been mentioned, not easy to pick a favourite track. I can honestly say that there is not one Arena track I don't like.
If I had to pick one track then it would be Friday's Dream. But The Butterfly Man, Running from Damascus, Valley of the Kings (mainly for Clive's lovely keyboard solo in the middle), A State of Grace, Vansishing Act and Opera Fanatica all run it close.
What no Contagion tracks I hear you cry? Well I tend to look on Contagion as one complete piece of music and find it hard to pick particularly favourites from it as I like the whole album.
Cheers,
Ian
Very true, Ian. I tend to like Contagion with all relevant CDs in the player listening to the whole saga. It rocks! They're a rockin' band! Arena rock! "Shall I say rock again?" The gig in London will be a rockin' night! ;D
Vanishing Act is a great track as well! :)
For me Hanging Tree does it all! :)
I think it would have to be Purgatory Road, or perhaps cutting the cards or maybe soloman. Too many really good songs to choose from but they tend to be the songs that get played twice when playing the albums they are on......oh .....forgot eyes of lara moon
and the butterfly man and several others. It's a nice dilema (spelling?) to have, having so many excellent songs to choose from.
Old stuff: Valley of the Kings, Medusa, Empire of thousand days, and of course, Solomon.
Mid Period: All The Visitor album (masterpiece), The butterfly man and Friday´s dream
New stuff: Riding the tide, Purgatory road and the live version of Midas Vision.
Hanging Tree!
Solomon! Ofcourse.... :P
Jericho

Ghost In The Firewall is an excellent track. It's got alot of weird sounds in it.
That's a hard question!!!! I like all the stuff they made.....but I think Contagion is one of my fav albums.....from the beginning right to the end! I love Sirens, a pitty I never heard it live.....The only song that I don't like that much is Medusa......it's irritating me, why I don't know, the gig in Zoetermeer at september 16, Rob introduced the song as "specially for the women".......since than I skip the song when it comes along! I think it's the way it's been song....kind of whiny....(only with a heart of anger!!!) But ok what's one song on so many???? ;D ;D
Serenity / Tears in the rain (as a unit)
I listened to the phenomenal "Visitor" album for the first time with my headphones up high and just listening and reading it like a photo album, turning the pages one by one following the music and getting caught by the magic pictures of the booklet. I remember my feelings as I turned and looked in that clown´s face of a broken soldier...full of tears trying to keep up and smile...and then the guitar solo started...this was a kind of revelation for me. Everytime I hear the song I see this face and can almost feel the despair of this man hitting the ground. This made me a real Arena fan.

Serenity / Tears in the rain (as a unit)
I agree, what an emotional song. One of favourites too.
Yep, "Tears In The Rain" is loaded with emotion, especially where the guitar solo fiollows the lyrics.
I think nearly all songs on Contagion/-ous/-um are good.
But Skingame has a lot of musical changes.
In the begin it's heavy. in the middle it has a twist and in the end there's a VERY nice acoustic guitar piece, with the vocals: "I will call"
beautiful, that whole song is great.
I have found myself posting an awful lot in "off topic" at the moment, so I feel the need to post here.
I don't like Crying for help Three as much as other songs on Songs from the Lions Cage, but i particularly like the crossover bit between Crying for Help three and Midas vision. Midas Vision is one of my favourite songs on Songs from the lions cage.
It's impossible to say which is your favourite track from one of your favourite bands, a band witch has made a lot of tracks.. But I can try.. These are some of them..
Mea Culpa (Just love this song! :D)
Opera Fanatica
Smoke and Mirrors
The Butterfly Man
Moviedrome
Friday's Dream
The Hanging Tree
Midas Vision
Enemy Without
well i think my fav track would have to be (don't forget to ) Breath but with rob singing it.
then helpVII, skin game, hanging tree. i have to say i love rob's voice and when i listen to the other lead singers it's not that same effect for me.
I must say, I took a liking to Skin Game. Also, Salamander. Very catchy! :)
Solomon: it started it all for me
MovieDrome: I cant describe how much I love this song
I always liked Blood Red Room....short yes, but it has a bit of an industrial feel which I LOVE
Last track on Pride....I think it was Sirens I like that a lot too

Very interesting, that... it does have that sort of feel to it.
Blood Red Room... isn't that that track with the spoken text instead of singing?
Yep!
Great atmosphere.
Cutting the cards
From "Immortal?" - The butterfly man
From "Pepper's ghost" - Opera fanatica
From "The visitor" - In the blink of an eye
From "Contagion" - On the box

Hey Nicky, have you ever heard of dyslexia?
I'm not saying that marcello is dyslectic or anything, but even if he isn't, then it still is not nice to keep hammering on someones grammar or spelling errors.
Besides, people who aren't regular posters in here, might feel a bit embarrassed.
As long as you understand what they mean, please don't keep bothering so much...
I know that you are joking, but it's not always clear.

On another note, I promised some Arena photos from the Reading gig.....
:-[
My digital camera was dead on the morning of the gig, and I was leaving the house for Reading at 11.30... woken up by my cat at about 10am, got showered and stuff. About 10 mins before going to the train station, went and checked on the damn thing and it hadnt been charged. Oh well, I managed to take photos on my phone....... which I havent managed to even get off my phone and onto my computer. This I will try right now.
